One of the very best of the modern era. The cast was excellent with catchy songs and lots of action. Good stuff! My favorite part was the dance off and the great tune "Handjive".

In 1978 when the movie Grease was made, I was 14 and I thought it was one of the greatest movies ever. How mistaken I was. Isn't it funny how time goes on we see how stupid and naive we were as kids?
irishgit 10/13/2008
I don't know what people are looking at to rate this high on this list, but even by the standards of musicals, (which is not particularly high) this is pretty bad. Wooden acting, pedestrian cinematography and mediocre songs.
cyclee 05/30/2008
I'm not so sure how this got such a high rating. The plot was high schoolish, poking funs about nothing really funny. Outrage scenes that don't normally happen in the real life, and music that has absolutely no substances.
oscargamblesfr o 05/28/2008
Despicable retro faux 50's nonsense I wouldn't even force my worst enemy to watch.
FranksWildYear s 04/15/2008
Deplorable 50's pastiche with horrible songs that is elevated to 2 stars only by Olivia Newton John's out of period spandex tights.

i loved grease. it was a fun movie with fun music. rizzo and kenicki were my favorite.

Even I liked this movie, which is weird because I could care less for musicals. This movie just makes you feel good.
TEBKOE 03/12/2006
Personally, it's my favorite Musical of all-time. I find that this musical is the only true one that relates to all generations, no matter when applied. It takes the style and storyline from those similar in classic musicals (Music Man / State Fair / Oklahoma / West Side Story) and combines them with songs of a modern-day era. Songs that will always stand the test of time. Songs that will forever be played at school dances and most of all, wedding receptions. Of all "classic" musicals, none will be able to reach entire, future generations like this one. The children of the 2000s will be able to at least relate to this storyline, because everyone has to "come of age" and can relate to "gangs", the pressure to conform, sex-pressure, guys dissing each other over girls, etc... It's all in there. And, like I said, the music is still modern-day-ish enough to have people remember words and sign along. If you don't like this musical, I don't see how you can like ANY musical.

theres only a few musicals i like and grease is one i have always enjoyed
cutegurl 04/17/2005
I liked Grease. It entertained me all the way through which is hard for a movie to do because I have a short attention span. Yeah, it was silly and the songs weren't of groundbreaking material, but it was what it was. A cute musical meant to entertain, not enlighten or broaden horzions.
Djahuti 04/17/2005
A truly bad movie-with one of the most annoying soundtracks EVER.Once on a job,the only music playing was this soundtrack over and over-when I finally spoke up and offered to get another tape out of my car I was loudly cheered by everyone in the building.People were literally ready to walk off the job!
Mad Hatter 04/04/2005
I worked at a grocery store with a video rental shop. The lady that worked there always played this movie, over and over again. I hated it. I can not stand this movie.
kattwoman 04/04/2005
loved it. watch it every time it comes on. i sing along. its a make you feel good movie
Maomania 02/28/2005
A fun movie. The story is very simple and the acting is not that good either. But who cares. The music makes up for it. Who does not start singing along you're the one that I want..whooo whooo whooo. Timeless.
spoiledPRgirl8 8 07/24/2004
this movie is a great classic of the 70's.it has love, lust, music, and drama..all the ingredients to make a great 70's classic for all the world to pick up and make better!!
kelly_smith_ro cks00 05/06/2004
This is a great movie! Ladyshark and rock goddess go on a bout there being no black or asian people in it. I don't knopw for sure but didn't 1950's californain high schools separate black and white kids, I don't know, but that would explain it.
freebird_0128 04/19/2004
Grease is just one of those movies I can watch over and over again without ever getting bored. Just hearing one of those songs brings a smile to my face. Happy-go-lucky and true to the feeling of high school, this is just pure entertainment. Nothing deep or dramatic or wildly talented, it's meant to be cheesy and silly but most of all, it's just meant to be fun.
Moosekarloff 12/19/2003
Please, hand me the air-sickness bag. A stupid turd of nostalgia featuring two of the absolutely worst leads ever to disgrace the screen. Olivia Newton-John sure looks good in this one, but as usual, sings like she's got a clothespin on her nose. John Ravolta puts in another oily and unconvincing gooch performance, singing like a frog in rut, and twitching around in that disconcerting manner of his. The songs are juvenile claptrap. The dancing is predictable and hardly memorable. The script is moronic. Otherwise, this is a great flick!!!
iluvamerica 08/07/2003
This is a great movie and will forever be an American classic.
Hardwire 08/07/2003
I have always liked this movie, it's just a fun to watch musical. There seems to be a lot of thought but into the songs unlike the sequel, and the story is more intriging. I liked all of the characters, but how did a few of those guys get into the T-Birds?
LadyShark4534 07/29/2003
I do like how it's made to make you feel happy and all.....but ROCK GODDESS made a good point! All the characters are the SAME lame stereotypes we all have seen. We have Danny......Tough Biker. We have Kenicke....A total loser and wanna-be bad a*ss. Then we have Sandy.....Good cheerleader girl. Rizzo......Snobby Popular chick.
THE_ROCK_GODDE SS 07/07/2003
I liked the romantic plot, but WHERE THE HELL is this school supposed to take place? I mean, This movie has no black, asian, or hispanic characters whatsoever! I won't even get into how Arabs and Hindus are ignored in musical movies. And what was the point of Patty Simcox, the character?
Crystal Lovestorm 06/30/2003
It's alright. But having the character Jan really killed it. I mean, Who likes that bitch?
LiveLaughLearn 06/08/2003
One of my ALL time favorite movies!
Redoedo 06/01/2003
Absolutely loved this film and can watch it over and over again and not get bored. The characters are all so fun, and the music is great! A lot of memoriable scenes from this film (the "Grease Lightning" scene). If you haven't seen it, I highly reccomend you do as it is a classic.
Jason1972 05/28/2003
I know it's a huge hit among Generation X society, but as a fellow Xer, I didn't really get caught up in the craze. The acting was mediocre but of course, it really is more Broadway-oriented so you can't really expect standout performances, which I didn't see.
Solenoid DH 03/29/2003
Say, does anyone know where I can find a copy of the movie "The Girl Most Likely To"? I think it came out in 1973 or thereabouts, and starred Stockard Channing, one of the "Grease" actresses. "The Girl Most Likely To" (not to be confused with the similarly titled "The Girl Most Likely") was a dark comedy, about an ugly girl everyone made fun of, but who got plastic surgery after a car accident and was turned into a beautiful young woman. Then she used her new good looks to get revenge on everyone who had mistreated her earlier. It's a quirky comedy that never shows up on TV anymore. If any of you have info that will help, let me know.

I love Grease. John and Olivia are great together, and the soundtrack is great too.
lukskywlkr. 11/14/2002
I would say I've watched this start to finish at least 60 times. No kidding. I always wished I could have went to school with these guys. They looked like they were having so much fun. The songs were great, and the chemistry between Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta was excellent. In fact, the whole cast was just about perfect.
Janey_Lane 08/10/2002
I first saw this film when I was 10 years old, and loved it. As I watch it today it makes me realize that there were a lot of things I enjoyed more as a 10 year old; like jumping rope or building sand castles. This is not to say that Grease is a drag, quite the opposite in many ways it's a charming movie. The songs are catchy and the choreography is very nicely done. They've also managed to pick out a team of actors that work well together, playing off each other superbly. So what's missing? In the simplest term; decency. All the characters are more or less shallow and are possibly the OLDEST high schoolers I've ever laid eyes upon (and I've seen Beverly Hills 90210). That's the first mistake, the second is that everything is so stereotyped. Rizzo = slut. Kenickie = height of cool and very aware of it too. Jan = the chubster (where?). Frenchy = loveable ditz with heart of gold. Danny = cool guy but really a big softy. Sandy = scared, meak girl far away from home. These elements are portrayed immensely and get old really, really fast. Then of course the old clichés start kicking in. (SPOILER warning) Boy likes girl. Boy is tough, girl is not. Boy's friends don't approve. Boy acts like an idiot and looses girl. Girl decides to change her life just so she can be with boy. This, sadly, is a pretty accurate description of Grease. I do realize that it takes place in America in the 50's and that attitudes were different then than they are now. Still I can't see it without thinking how awfully dated this story is. Leaving the dating aside, the movie is very well made and flows easily between the different stories. And my, my, my is John Travolta dreamy! ;)

Wow, what an amazing album! So many great songs!
finlore 02/28/2002
I have to disagree with Obsidian's assessment. Yes, the story is a cliche, but there are very few original plots; most are different ways of telling a familiar story. Yes, the movie has no depth -- but I don't think it ever intended to be or to be seen as a deep, thought-provoking, meaningful movie. It's entertainment, plain and simple. For those of us who like "Grease", it succeeds very well in entertaining! I'm just glad I never started counting the number of times I've seen it!
Greaseisthewor d 12/30/2001
The tag line "The greatest musical of all time" certainly isn't a lie. It's gotta be one of the best films that I've ever seen!
Lord of the Waves 11/13/2001
This movie is AWESOME. Outstanding preformances by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. These movie is incredibly funny but as a younger child i really hated it. I did not understand Grease at all. That was such a waste. The movie has very catchy tunes. I havent seen it in about a month yet i still find myself humming them on occasion.
PopFanForever 09/26/2001
A Fantastic film. If you haven't seen it yet what are you waiting for? Sureit's corny but the characters are so much fun that it's hard to dislike it. Great soundtrack, Grease, You're the one that I want, Summer nights, all superb.
Yadayada 09/13/2001
This fun-loving musical starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta has tremendous acting and musical ability. It is a classic that will be around till the cows come home. It has great sing=a=long-songs, costumes and cute T-Birds. If u haven't seen it yet, where have u been? Go and have some fun "Summer Nights".
Pinkladykb 08/28/2001
I love "Grease"! It's a really fun film! The music is great and the lines are memorable. All the actors really suited their parts and were terrific. John Travolta and Olivia Newton John were perfect as Danny and Sandy!

callmetootie 04/05/2001
I'am proud to say that Grease is the greastest musical ever made, and is definatly considered to be a classic today. Danny and Sandy fell in love at the beach, but were split up when she had to move back to Sydney with her parents. But, her schedule changes, and they end up at the same high school together. She is now part of the pink ladies, a small little gallop of girls that smoke, drink, and date. Danny is part of the t-birds; a mix between Saturday Night Fever and Fonzie. Great soundtrack, in fact the best one out there.
angel_nikki 03/18/2001
Grease is an all time favorite of mine its will still be a classic in 50 years there will never be another musical that will ever have a huge impact like Grease did. As was once said "you could watch Grease tonight and still be entertained you could watch it 2 months from now and still be entertained."
Laughing Mushroom 01/25/2001
This movie, while no great work of art, is a lot of fun. John Travolta and Olivia Newton John are very engaging in the lead roles. This is a musical to watch for some laughs and good times.
Mglory 01/25/2001
A classic and worthy of seeing at some point, but it's incredibly cheesy. If you're looking for something interesing it's not the way to go, but it is kind of fun. Olivia Newton John and John Travolta are fun to watch.
JVargie 01/24/2001
A classic, how can anyone not see Grease in their lifetime. All the songs are catchy, the lines are cheesy and the characters are loveable. A good movie for a rainy day.
diggs 01/12/2001
Catchy show tunes that are great to boogie to at a dance. It has a short cute plot about the dramas of love. But in the end, everything works out so all are happy.
Monkeygirl_177 01/10/2001
I think music makes the movie. Grease left everyone singing. Even my generation is fascinated with Grease and the 50's. We all know the lyrics to "Summerlove".
Jake P 01/10/2001
Great cast and good music. This is a great adaptation of the stage play. Very funny.
