there are some rules that are just absolutly pointless right? so how could they not be frustrating when it's something that represents you and you are continuously being told that its wrong.

We have rules to discourage independent thought in favor of keeping order here. That's what I interpreted most of my schools rules as, anyways.

I'll admit that some of the rules made absolutely no sense at all (not that it was MY problem), but for the most part, the rules were something that I liked having in place. I tend to be a very straight-laced person; I enjoyed the structure and knowing what I could or could not do. I don't enjoy getting into trouble either; so knowing these rules saved me many problems in school.

Frustrating, yes. But the worst-kept secret in education is that rules are more for spoiled parents than students. Rather than enforce rules or discipline, today's parents blame the school. . .thus schools are forced to fall back on 'that's the rule.' You reap what you sow.

we have a rule that girls must wear socks above the ankle- because otherwise dear god they'd look like a common prostitute!

I'm all for rules but, they have to MAKE SENSE. That's where I ran and still do run into problems. There is nothing worse that a rule that is made without anything to back it up.

I fail to see how having a mullet can stymie my education.

It sounded stupid when our vice-principal came on every Friday morning on the intercom for morning announcements to remind us that Weapons are not permitted in the school, including knives, guns, swords, brass knuckles, nunchucks, chinese throwing stars . . . and I'd have to wonder WHO THE HELL HAS CHINESE THROWING STARS??? And why would they mention something so insignificant? But, I know why--because, as sad as it is, people will find ANY loophole possible and exploit it. If she missed even the most obscure thing that could be used as a weapon, you'd better believe some smartass would pick that up. It's like when you find those stupid warnings on products like Please remove your baby before storing your stroller. You'd think no one would be that dumb that they'd do that, but you'd be surprised.

This was what I hated most about school. I still don't care for rules, but at least as an adult I have more flexibility. When you're a kid, your options are limited.

Rules are a FUNDAMENTAL part of life. They keep everything organized and well run. But some really need to be improved or else they do become pointless. Here's an example: The local schools in my town have implemeted an ID tag policy which requires students to wear there ID tags tthroughout the day at school. Makes sense right? Not the way the schools are doing it. First off, the schools LITERALLY have about forty two UN-monitered entrances that are open at all times! Also, only two grades out of eight are given ID tags! Bottom line- rules are important but they have to be organized correctly.
