Johnny Thunders

Johnny Thunders was perhaps the most influential guitarist of the 1970s. Unfortunately, not all his influence was musical.

Johnny Thunders 5

Was always one of my favorite musicans; his work was wildly uneven over the years, but when it worked, it REALLY worked. The NY Dolls always were one of my favorite groups, as were the Heartbreakers. The quality of the music tended to vary depending on how strung out Thunders was. Someone once said (not sure who at this point) that Thunders had a knack for "snatching failure from the jaws of victory." Someone, I think Richard Hell, once said (and I paraphrase), "He was never very proficient verbally, so that when he spoke, he had to speak through his music." Never able to get on top of his heroin addiction, he died prematurely (there have been assertions of suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, but I can't pretend to be knowledgeable enough to speak with any authority on that) and he's buried in a Catholic cemetery in Queens, not far from Heartbreakers/NY Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan. I once ventured out there to pay my respects; he's buried across the street from Louis Armstrong. R.I.P., Johnny. You're missed.
