Truly the best book I have ever read. It's scary, dramatic, funny, everything you could want in a book. You get really attached to the characters: Frodo, Sam, Gollum, Gandalf, Aragorn...and even though people say the female characters in the book are fake and 2-dimensional, I think Eowyn is one of the best characters. Also, the creatures and places are so realistic that you almost believe that this world really existed. A very very good book.

The Lord Of the Rings is perhaps the most influencial fantacy series of all time, and yet, probably the slowest moving book ever written. Tolkien has a talent for writing rarely surpassed, however probably would discrible the anatomy of an elf during the middle of a Battle scene!

That might be good for those who like pseudo-historical, awfully long sagas about the so-called evil fighting the so-called good (or the other way, won't matter, really) in a form of one big plagiarism. All the stuf described in that book had already existed in a far better form - medieval and pre-medieval mythological stories. Mr. Tolkien definately lacked imagination but was a very meticulous writer instead - thousands of trivial and unmeaningful episodes. All in all that resembles "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon" - in it's pompous and pretentional style. Anyway, if you're more than 12 years of age, you're already far too old for that book.

I think that Tolkien is a genius, no no words can describe him because what he has created is beyond brilliant! I loved these books and ll of his books! He bringshis characters to life and he discribes everything so well! You actually feel like you in Lothlorien, Gondor, the Shire, Rivendell, Mordor (but who would want to be in mordor), on the road with the Fellowship, and on the battle feild. If i could I would give this trilogy 1,000,000 stars but it only goes up to five. The second I started to read the books I fell in love with it instantly. This book can be enjoyed by people of all ages and I hope that every on enjoys it.

A little slow-moving and verbose, but that's to be expected, as it was the first of its kind. A classic, but there have been huge improvements in the genre since Mr. Tolkien's time.

Its simply the greatest book ever written. Tolkien did'nt simply create a book but an entire world with characters as real and vivid as any in real life. When you read it you are transported from a dull reality into a magical world full of elves, dwarfs and lets not forget hobbits.

This is an extremely detailed fantasy epic. Too much, may I ad. Although like the Hobbit, it is the best of fantasy, JRR Tolkien goes, I'm afraid to say, with too much detail. Of course not all think so, but I think that he wanders off the tale of the ring-bearer a few too many times. Most of this over-detailing is in the Fellowship, so if you get through the first book than the second two will be easier to comprehend.

Seeing the movie prompted me to re-read this trilogy, and I'm really glad I did. I'd forgotten how great these three books are. I think Tolkien gets carried away sometimes with the songs and his fascination with language, but somehow it all works together to add to the feeling that you're reading something authentic, something that could really be the mythology of a civilization instead of the product of one man's imagination. I think the first half of "Fellowship of the Ring" is a little slow, but once I was past that point I had a hard time putting down the books. They're timeless - I hope my kids and grandkids will read and enjoy them.

The Greatest Book of its time and now. This book is an imazing book filled with everything a good book needes. The characters are in their own way either perfect or close to it. They all have their own way for everything and somehow these peoples work out their differences of race, fighting style, and rank (example Aragorn=King) The book is fantastic!

JRR TOLKEIN has not simply created a book... he has created a legacy... a whole other world. While some may complain about the length... you try writing the entire history of various (yes more than one) civilizations, and weave a compelling plot simultaneously! Its nearly impossible... but as Tolkein so kindly proved... not totally impossible. Its hard to describe the amazing amount of life he breathes into his characters... they all have unique personalities... living and fighting under a shadow that threatens to consume them all. Each of them brings a bit of variety... from Frodo's determination and resilience, to Aragorn's majesty and versatility... to even Pippin's immature innocence... Everyone has to love someone! And the plot... its impossible not to become totally into it. Its almost as if TOLKEIN drags you into his fictional world, making you pine for the grandeur of Lothlorien, or the glory of Gondor. And because he put so much effort into it, you can totally relate.. hes explained every legend from the beginning of time, to the end of the age... as long as you're already ensnared, there's no feeling bored! I'd say so much more, but then I'd probably give away the plot... or even worse the ending, and then obsess over the amazing characters (can't you simply imagine Aragorn being so totally gorgeous? and Legolas... *sigh*) Lol, so here I leave you. If you haven't read it, or dislike it... READ!!!!

Awesome story, but dense writing.

Difficult to rate something that's one-of-a-kind, as Lord of the Rings surely is. I read it first thirty years ago, have read it many times since, most recently finished it only yesterday. Its plot still keeps me gripped through the three volumes; the final pages still bring tears to my eyes. Since reading LOTR first, I've read much fantasy, enjoyed much of it, but always find myself comparing it to LOTR, usually to its detriment. Only a couple of authors have made me feel that Tolkien would appreciate their work.

There are a few interesting ones, but which all turn very boring and confusing by the end.

i had always been curious about tolkien but never got around to reading any of his stuff. till this year when i decided to read the hobbit and lord of the rings before the movie came out. and i fell absolutely in love with it. in the intro he confessed he had hoped to evoke the readers emotions through the trip as best he could. and for me he truly did. i almost cried when gandalf fell in the hole and i was so happy when the boys left were safe back in the city when the quest was finally over.. wonderful, wonderful book.

This is not a story it's an experience. Tolkien creates a whole world of wonderful and amazing creatures from hobbits and elves to evil orcs. Your entire family will love it, my dad introduced this book to me. Lord of the Rings is the best book ever.

I've got no intentions of outdoing others on this.. The book gave me the best 'highs' one can get on someone else's writings.. Unforgettable.

Absolutely the greatest book of fiction written to date. Superior charecters, a magnificently created and crafted world combined with the prototypical battle between good and evil. I have read and reread this series and love to go back and visit my old friends. This is a fantasy book that you don't need to be a fantasy fan to enjoy.
Derringer 04/26/2000
Tolkien's an excellent writer, and I can see how Lord of the Ring's inspired many science fiction/fantasy writers today. But let's face it: the guy's writing can kill a man. There's simply too much unnecessary detail to make it worth the ordeal of reading it in its entirity, never mind a second one. But there were some pretty good parts, and it's those good parts that make me give this an OK rating.
wins5238om 03/24/2000
If you're into Fantasy, this is simply *the* book to read. There is nothing like it, no matter what the covers of other books may say ("Comparable to Lord of the Rings" etc). Tolkien had been working on his subcreation (the fantasy world of Middle-Earth) for forty years before LOTR was published, giving it consistant history, geography, mythology, languages, etc, etc, making it believable like our own Earth. Then he used his intimate knowledge of the English language to tell his story in the ways of a master storyteller, at all times choosing his style of writing after the content he wanted to express. There ought to be a category 6 - absolutely fabulous - only for this book, that's the only way to give it full justice!

Tolkien creates a deep, rich, world, that you can smell and taste from the page. An exciting trilogy with many lessons in life.
