to say it's hot is simply understating it,where i live even the swimming pool water and lake water is hot.it peaks around the end of august.usually the first nippy weather don't get here until mid september.

It's much too hot, and no special national observances.

August is too hot, but in about the middle of the month, it does start to get a little cooler at night, and you can definitely tell that fall is around the corner.

And happy birthday, Vudija! :-)

I can look past August being the hottest month of the year, and I can look past it being the month that school starts again for the year. I only look past all of this stuff, because it is the month of my birthday, and if it wasn't I would hate this month too.

Update: 21st birthday is tomorrow --- numbah, am I still getting a drunk call from you? :)

Too hot! Days and days of no rain and 100 plus temps. Sweat and more sweat. The only thing worth doing is curling up with an air conditioner. By the time September gets here, I'm begging for Fall!!!

Hell calls Memphis to see what to set the temperature. If you want HOT, come to Beal Street in August. I'll buy you a cold one!

Hot. Humid. No days off of work. If you do travel anywhere nice, it's full of tourists. Hate this one, hate it with a passion. . .

I have lived in South FL for 17 years and August is the hottest and most humid month of the year plus hurricanes are always a threat. It is pure misery down here in August.

The best month in the Pacific NW. We can go boating and not be cold. Or wet!

This is by far the best month of the year. This is the time people are planning their holidays, its hot and name me one person thats walking around miserable this time of the month? When I think of August I think of beaches, shorts, mini-skirts, sunshine and just long hot summer nights. What isn't there to like about this month?

My mother's birthday is in August, and therefore August is another great month along with December (my birth month) and January (my sister's birth month)!

August is when I am radiant. Days at the beach in the sun with a nice breeze and not too hot like July. I've lived in Boston and Seattle and August is by far the most superb month in those places. Believe it or not it doesn't rain in Seattle that time of year and the weather is gorgeous. An ideal option for a vacation for those folks in Texas and Florida glued to the AC in August.

I like more July, although August usually isn't as hot. When I went to school is was a whole month off. But towards the end it got depressing knowing that school was near. Better sports month than July, baseball games are more important, and for some teams the beginning of the college football season.

Why do they have to put on the Back to school ads, it just spoils the rest of vacation. The other reason why I hate August is we go back to school, well I get a half day on the first day.

I love how the thunderstorms stack up on the mountains surronding L.A. and San Diego. They're dramatic. I hate flying near them though. It's darned hot under the jet's plexiglass canopy while your on the ground! I sweat like heck. Still, I love the tropical air that blows up from Mexico. Even tha air seems cool once you pop open the canopy. The surfing is usually blowen out or filled with tourists, but I go out at six am to miss that.

The dog days of August are clearly the hottest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This makes the beach particularly appealing and the water warm after a summer of heat on the waves. As others have noted, this month is in desperate need of a holiday; however, Labor Day is just around the corner from August. An appropriate month for Leos, August was originally the Roman month of Sextillus which was renamed in honor of Caesar Augustus. The 31st day was added so that Augustus' month wouldn't have less days than Julius Caesar's month of July.

Prime tourist season, when the cruise ships seem to dock by the dozen and visitors photograph every street sign and panhandler in sight. I try to avoid downtown, and frequent the lesser bars and bistros away from the tourist trail.

It has it's ups and downs. For instance, a lot of holidays for me and a lot of family birthdays are in this month. But it is of course the dreaded month when school starts for me, but still.

Tourist hell, avoid the downtown, go to the beaches and restaurants the turistas don't know about; skies sunny and temperatures in the 70s, perfection; walk on the beach in the cool foggy morning.

The dog days make it boring, but still it is the hottest month and you cannot argue with the beach. One tip for decreasing dog days: A new national holiday. Something like Flag Day, try "America Day." Or divide Alaska into two and we can have "West Alaska Day" celebrating our victory over the West Alaskan forces.

School starts in August- not a very good thing. But at least here in Houston we get the first part of August out and the weather is pretty nice. An OK month.

August is pretty good- School's out, and its the best month to go to the beach. The water up here isnt bath water like Florida's is. It actually does cool you off- and its not too cold. School is looming closer and closer... How come all of the fun has to end?

My birthday month as well, and I've got my 21st to enjoy this year! August is usually the time where Britain sees a semblance of summer, and I try yo go out and enjoy it as much as possible. When I was living at home with my parents, summer meant going down to Ramsgate beach to lie in the sun and feel nice and warm and hear the waves crashing into the shore. Nice ice cream to devour and going down to the park for a game of football or to chuck a frisbee around. Can't beat it.

Summertime -- what a wonderful word! In August, summer can be its best, bringing hot sunny days with clear blue sky. Crowds of brilliant-coloured flowers spill everywhere. It's my birthday month, and Leo is ruled by the sun, so maybe it's not surprising that summer is the season when I thrive. My favourite place on earth is a little-known beach on Lake Winnipeg. I can walk along the long curving stretch of fine white sand, looking out at the horizon, appreciating this large lake that, from the viewpoint of my beach, could be mistaken for ocean. The opposite shore cannot be seen. Gulls swoop to the water, snatching unsuspecting fish, while pelicans bob along the tiny waves, fishing as they go. Scattered umbrellas pop up like gaily-painted toadstools around the close end of the path leading to the beach. Further away, people are scarcer; you can close your eyes and listen to the sound of water lapping against the sand. Peace is never far away at "my" beach.
