I bought my talented multi-instrumetalist wife a mandolin for her birthday recently so that she would be back at beginner level and would be able to play with me while I plunked around on guitar. After an hour of looking at free tutorials on the internet, she had already passed me by again. Still, we manage to make music that sounds good if the listener, and players, have had enough wine.

A diffucult to master instrument,best heard played by someone like Dave Grisman.

I've been playing for almost a year now, I also play guitar, harmonica, ukulele and bass, and can fake piano...anyway It's a beautiful instrument I just need to get a better quality mando one thing I reccomend if your gonna learn to play learn on a decent one such as a gibson or fender if you can't afford those, stagg makes decent ones with good intonation for less than 200 bucks.

There's a song called Mandolin Rain by Bruce Hornsby and The Range. It's so pretty. So cool. I like a mandolin when mixed into rock, pop and new age.

It's got a beautiful sound. There is this country/bluegrass band i like that has the instrument its very unique and its quite soothing

Great for certain things, but not practical in an entertainment aspect. Can play single notes or chords.
