ItemImageMark Andrew Spitz (born February 10, 1950, in Modesto, California) is a two-time American Olympic swimmer. He holds the record for most gold medals won in a single Olympic Games (seven), which he set at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He remains (as of 2008) the only Olympic athlete to both win a gold medal in every (individual) event he entered in a given year, and to set a new world record in each such event. (Wikipedia)

An amazing athlete of incredible self-discipline, having trained every day from age two. What some people don't know is that he announced before the games that he would win 7 gold medals and set 7 new world records, and even announced the times he would swim them in. He was correct in every race to within 1/100 of a second.

If he'd won his seven golds in the '36 Olympics in Berlin, Leni Riefenstahl would've tossed her film into the pool. The Munich games should have been cancelled.
