This guy was, without a doubt, one of the greatest track and field athletes ever. Brash and arrogant, Johnson was nevertheless a great runner with an upright style reminiscent of the great Jesse Owens. Michael Johnson was the greatest ever runner in both the 200 meters and 400 meters. Finally, who can forget the moment in Atlanta where he not only broke 19.66 seconds but shatterred it by a record .34 seconds at 19.32 seconds? Notwithstanding the fact he also broke Butch Reynold's 400 meter record, it is hard to say why he wasn't the best. And he did it with style to boot (or gold shoes). Whatever is said about Michael Johnson, no one can deny his place amongst great Olympic athletes, certainly not in track and field.

No doubt greatest long sprinter ever. However, it's too simplistic to divide his 200m time by 2 to compare him to great 100m runners. Johnson's second 100 has a flying start which is a huge deal. The reaction time of a sprinter is about 1/4 of a second, meaning that in a 100m race the clock is already at 0.25 before the athlete even moves. At that point it takes more than 1.2 seconds to get close to full speed - Johnson on the other hand is starting his second 100m at full speed. Yes Johnson was able to hold his speed longer than anyone else, which is why he's the best ever at the 200m, 300m, and 400m - but he did not have the top speed of the great 100m runners - he would have needed a hurricane at his back to run a sub-9.8 out of the blocks.

Think about this: in 1996 200m finals, his first 100m was clocked at 10 seconds flat. That means, for all you Donovan Bailey fans, Michael Johnson ran his 2nd 100m in 9.32 seconds. Even if Tim Montgomery (current 100m world record holder at 9.78 secs) could sustain that speed for 200m his time would only be 19.66. All 100m sprinters slow down after 140-160 meters. Johnson increases from 100-200m. No man will ever run a 9.32 100m as Johnson did 8 years ago.

He's the King of Pop, sleeps with kids, has had way to much surgery and he's an athlete. Oh, Johnson I had him confused with some one else, sorry about that. Never Mind! For Gilda:

absolutly amazing! There will never be another athlete like Michael Johnson. He was the face of the 1996 Olympics in Alanta and with good reason. 19.32 secs, breaking his own world record and where better to do it than the Olympics held in his home country. One of the best races of all time, made even more special by those shiney gold spikes.

In my mind, Johnson has to be the greatest sprinter ever, and perhaps the best track athlete to ever live. HOnestly, the only one who stands a chance at being better is kenenisa bekele. So yea, i can see his 400 meter being beaten with in a couple decades, but his 200, now thatz a keeper.

Not the world's fastest man, as he claimed. He lost to Donovan Bailey in the 150 metre showdown at the Skydome in 1997!

MJ is a great sprinter, no doubt. But far from the greatest track star. The greatest track star my opinion: Haile Gebrselassie. Now he's a real runner.

michael johnson did the impossible, break the record in semis(19.66) and go to finials and break it in 19.32 sec, and then in '99 turn around and snatch world leader in the 400meters and world record(43.18)

When I first think of Michael Johnson I picture so many accomplishments. He owns so many world records that in 40 years everyone is going to think of him as we do Jesse Owens. He owns the 200(19.32), 300(30.85), 400(43.18/44.63), and anchored the USA to a world record performance in the 1,600m relay(2:54.20). No one in this life time can be compared to Michael Johnson. He is already ahead of our time, my gosh look at the mans 200m time when do you think that will be broken. I truly believe that I will not be around to see his record be broken and I'm only 19. Sure you may think he is being cocky but that isn't true, he is just confident. He knows his abilities and has used his abilities to get himself fame and fortune. If you disagree with anything I have put in my writings and would like to challenge me with your knowledge on Michael johnson then please e-mail me. Thank you

Remarkably competative or dominant in all sprint distances. Very unique in this competetive era when most athletes need to specialize their training to only one event to make it. His 200m, 300m and 400m records will stand for a while no doubt.

He was 2 untouchable records; the 200 m (19.32 sec) and the 400 m (43.18). 19 World/Olympic gold medals. I just hate it when he wussed out and pulled up. (i.e. his race with Donovan Bailey in 1997 and the 200 m @ the U.s. trials in Sacramento 2000)/ I guess he was too used to winning.

Johnson is undoutable one of the greatest athletes ever in the history of track and field and athletics in general. His 200 record of 19.32 is astounding, almost unbelievable. I can only compare it to Bob Beamons record setting long jump. I seriously dought that Johnson's record will be broken during my lifetime. If any athlete is deserving of a "5" rating, Johnson is.

19.32 seconds. For 200 Meters. The old record was 19.75. It had been 19.78 before that. Michael Johnson broke the previous record (don't count his at the Trials) by 0.43 seconds. It had taken 40 years for the record to come down that far. And, he completed a 200/400 double. Never done before. Never done since. And, his gold shoes were a marketing masterpiece. 5 stars.

Michael Johnson is the most dominating athlete in the Olympics. Not only does he win the events, but he wipes everybody out. He is one of the greatest Olympic athletes of all time. If not one of the greatest, he is the greatest of all time.

In track and field, this guy is the best. He is really an inspiration for many. When he won in 1996 many thought he was stuck-up and arrogant, but that is far from the truth. While many thought he was through when he failed to qualify for his famous event the 200M, he still overcame critics and won two golds in Sydney.

He is the greatest runner in the 90's and possibly ever. He smashed the world record in the 200 meters in the '96 Olympics and I don't think anyone will break that record. It's great that he has won only gold medals in the big races.

Probably the best 400M track star of all time because of his athleticism and determination. He can even beat his own world record a couple of times which shows that he has the drive to improve himself and do better the next time. Highly decorated athlete as well as an American that inspires the entire nation.

His whole outlook on the Olympics is great. He has that winner attitude that would definitely lead him to gold. Also, I like athletes that train naturally. Michael is an all around competitor.

This guy is some incredible athlete. Yesterday, he became the first man in Olympic history to repeat in the 400 meters and the oldest man to win the event. His running style is textbook. It may look unusual, but there is no wasted motion or energy. And, not only does he seem to save his best races for the big moments setting world records along the way, but he wins by such large margins. He is one fast dude.
