joe montana was an average quarterback. he shouldn't be on this list. he had great recievers.
macca/darren 02/11/2004
Everyone forgets that the 49ers were a 1-15 team with NO history when Joe Montana came aboard. Even Bill Walsh had a terrible year pre-Montana. Joe Montana MADE that system great--and revolutionized the position (and the game). Believe it or not, Joe is actually UNDERRATED. That whole system was built around Montana's talents. Bill Walsh was a genius because he was the first to ever envision Joe Montana football. Jerry Rice was the best receiver ever, but, he might not have been without Joe. Joe made everyone around him better- just ask Jerry. If his last Super Bowl team was so talented, his early super bowl teams were almost no-names. ... Everyone forgets ... Joe Montana is absolutely the Greatest Player in modern football.
wayno391 02/04/2004
joe montana is the greatest ever for now,,,,,,,but watch out for tom brady!!!
Common Cents 02/04/2004
He's the greatest.
tdubya71 01/14/2004
Joe knows Super Bowls. He is very close to Unitas as the greatest QB of all time.
Misque13 12/14/2003
The most overrated quarterback of all time.
ClassicTVFan47 12/10/2003
One of the best NFL quarterbacks, bar-none. Certaintly brought the 49ers and the Chiefs to many victories.
Philkid3 09/06/2003
Though frequently overrated, still one of the best.
Datmartin 06/26/2003
BEST QB EVER!
FredTaylor#28 06/21/2003
Montana is considered by most fans as the best ever simply cause his of 4 rings. That is all they look at. Sure this guy was great and deserves all the credit he gets but come on, look at the supporting cast he had. He probably played with the best supporting cast ever. People can make a case for the Cowboys of the early 90's but the late 49er's team was simply loaded everywhere you looked. Yes you can't take away from his clutch performances in the Super Bowl but do you really think if you stuck Dan Marino in Montana's place, he wouldn't have excelled also and just win ring after ring? Sure one of the greatest, but i think people judge way too much on rings and ignore all the circumstances.
hrd2h8 06/20/2003
I was fortunate enough to watch this man play, even though it was the beginning of the end of his career. But as I stated with Payton, he has enough highlight videos to occupy you for hours. One of the greatest clutch players in the history of professional sports.
leaflady 06/03/2003
He knew just where to through that ball! He was to me one of the best quarterbacks ever!
Joe Joe 06/03/2003
Look at the Rings. And the mvps in the big game 3
TIDE-FAN 05/31/2003
ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER WATCHED
drewdogg 05/12/2003
Joe Montana has not only great quarterback experience, but great leadership abilities. Because he took the 49ers and the Chiefs and turned them from below average teams to excellent ones.
andrew smith 05/08/2003
Greatest quarterback(and NFL player) of all time. The way he played under pressure simply wasnt human
SYVD 04/18/2003
Never liked Joe since I was a Steve fan, but the man was the best who ever played. Greatest clutch performer the NFL has ever seen. The guy was still a jackass though.
guraqt2me2 04/15/2003
A "Quarter back's Quarter back" ... Joe Montana knew how to play the game! He could scamble under pressure and hit his Reciever right in the pocket. He could run like a bullet and throw a pass like an arrow. The Montana - Rice combination was a recipe for Super Bowl dynasty success. The 49ers haven't been the same since he left!
CLAUDIO 04/09/2003
Joe Montana and Dan Marino are the very Greatest and Best Quarterbacks in History of Football.
mochi22 04/07/2003
My nickname for him is St. Joseph. I'm so glad to have lived during the same era as this superman. He and Tiger and ok MJ are the greatest EVER. It will be almost impossible for any human to surpass Mr. Montana.
norman bates 03/25/2003
THE BEST OF ALL TIME NO ONE COMES CLOSE HE WAS UNCANNY AT COMEBACKS MDE GOOD DECISIONS AND HAS SUPERBOWL RINGS TO SHOW IT HE PROVED IN KC THAT HE WASNT JUST GOOD BECAUSE HE WAS ON THE 49ERS HE PROVED THAT HE IS GGOD ACTUALLY
Neroli 03/14/2003
A quote about him I loved: "Montana's seen more touchdowns from the seat of his pants than Pat Summerall.
7list 03/13/2003
Most overrated player of alltime. Jerry Rice and the 49er system is what made the 49ers great. After Montana left the 49ers were a better team with Steve Young. Steve Young was a better QB than Montana ever was.
unscarred53042 03/01/2003
Single most overrated player in history. His team and system were great, not him. Young outplayed him and then Garcia broke those numbers too. Are you going to say Garcia is great? Not me.
MeatGrinder 02/22/2003
Montana is one of the all-time greats. But he isn't the greatest QB to play the game. He's #2 behind Johnny U. And Steve Young performed even better when he was handed the reigns to the same team.
sharpshooter 02/19/2003
sorry guys but i just cant make myself agree with you. all those superbowl rings would have been nonexistant if he hadnt had such an awesome team to work with. elway went to 5 superbowls and none of those teams were anything exeptional without him. if you put montana on an average team, he suddenly becomes an average QB ie., kansas city cheifs he is definately not the greatest, not even close. just fortunate
widgeon 02/16/2003
The single most over-rated QB to ever play the game. The personnel around him and the system are the best. John Elway carried one bad team after another into the superbowl all on his own Montana proved in KC what he could do and Steve Young proved what a good system will do.
mikey frans 02/10/2003
best of all time MY ASS!! Man to Man he couldn't hold Jonh Elway's Jockstrap....Funny how he never threw for 4000 yards with all those offensive weapons...I Elway was on the team they would have went to the superbowl every year.serious.....and montana with jordan in the same sentence lmao.....True Football fans know Elway was the greatest of all time.....
montanaizgod 02/08/2003
well well well, a subject near to my heart.what can you say about the guy, he was just a WINNER! in our country, we celebrate winners, and we don't tolerate losers. to that dan marino fan, i'll i can say is SCOREBOARD! [you don't remember super bowl xix do ya? - didn't think so] all dan marino fans forget that game. he got outplayed and outperformed by his peer. not to say dan was chopped liver but for a guy with all his talent [hof indeed] he never got to another super bowl. joe went another two times and NEVER lost, not threw a SINGLE interception. joe's the guy you'd want in a foxhole, marrying your daughter, your son growing up to be like. he's our generation's jack armstrong. living in the bay area all my life, he like a GOD to us, never mind the rest of the country. he could run for mayor of san francisco and nobody would object [heck he could do no worse than willie brown] imagine he could go into any bar or restaurant in town and everyone would pick up his check, although he wouldn't WANT that because he's just joe. THAT IS WHY HE'S LOVED HERE! to me he'll always be the greatest.
doom 01/24/2003
He played for a excellent team yet he never threw for 4000 yards in a season. He only passed for more than 30 TDs once which was 31. Plus he had Jerry Rice. Dan Marino is ten times better even though his team wasn't that good. Best QB ever- Dan Marino. Why did Steve Young get 4000 passing yards with the same offense. No matter what Montana fans say, Montana ranks 25th in the best QBs of all time and Dan Marino is the best QB ever.
aper422 11/03/2002
Best quarterback to ever play the game. Loved it when he and the chiefs beat the crap out of steve young and the niners, even gave him a concussion. That game proved who the real niner quarterback should have been.
mcstowy 11/01/2002
A system guy. Steve Young ran the same offense better. If DeBerg had beaten him out, and he almost did, he would be on this list.
mortgageguy5@a o.com 10/29/2002
Joe cool. Greatest Quarterback of all-time. period. Nobody comes close, nobody.
lukskywlkr. 10/24/2002
Can't stand this guy. Never could. Don't care how many touchdowns, or yards or Super Bowls. I don't like his smug and smarmy attitude.
skinsfan 10/23/2002
Joe Cool. Good b-ball player too.
john davies 01/26/2002
To my mind the single most influential and greatest player of all.The ultimate general:ruthless,determined,scimitar-sharp brain, utterly composed under pressure, and able to instil in his team a total belief in victory, which he would inevitably conjure (magician-like)from the most unlikely circumstances. His record is legendary, his partnership with Jerry Rice still unmatched.Above all he was a winner. I say all this with no home town bias, being British-there,my credibility's completely blown!I was not a 49ers fan, indeed i almost invariably supported Montana's opponents in Superbowls and otherwise(i must admit i took a shine to the Seahawks when American Football was first shown here -an act of noble-naive masochism as it turned out),which over the years only increased my respect for the man. In Britain unfortunately the magnificent gladiatorial sport(such dynamic pace, skill and power!) is no longer screened on T.V.It reached a peak of popularity when the Bears(Taylor,Payton..)briefly ruled the forest, but slowly declined-it was always more for the "armchair" spectator rather than of mass participation here.I was an avid weekly viewer and greatly regret its current demise in Britain, but here's hoping it continues to excite and create new great heroes to rival Montana,Brown,Rice,Payton,Sanders..
Paul R 12/17/2000
The greatest QB to live. Screw Joe Namath. The man could not engineer plays and games the way #16 could. That jerk should have retired in SF though, stupid bastard.
deangelo 12/16/2000
One of the greatest QBs that ever graced the football field.
Weasel 12/16/2000
The greatest football player of all time. He was incredibly cool under pressure and handled every situation right.
Sebmwm3 12/15/2000
It was every kids dream to be Joe Montana when playing football. Every kid loved this guy because of what he did for San Francisco 49ers.
mmoreno 12/15/2000
The best quarterback of all time. Not just because he was on the best team of all, but because he made plays when they were needed.
squeeks 12/15/2000
What can you say about a guy whose nickname is comeback kid? He did not have the greatest throw, but he had the will to win. Three time Super Bowl MVP. Greatest quarterback to play the game.
wulaser 12/15/2000
Joe Montana is simply the best QB of all time. He is the best clutch QB ever. He won San Francisco 4 Super Bowl rings. He was a pure football player, in that he played for the game rather than money. He was also underated and proved everyone wrong. Since I am from San Francisco, I think it influenced my rating.
dnutzdere 12/14/2000
Who else? What can I say? Montana is to NFL quarterbacks as Michael Jordan is to the NBA. The four time Super Bowl champion who gave the 49ers the moniker "Team of the 80's" is simply the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Who can ever forget "The Catch" against those pesky Dallas Cowboys? Although it was sad to see him go to KC, I'm glad he retired as a 49er.
jriker 12/14/2000
Arguably one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. As a kid, he was my favorite player. I lived in Detroit at the time, but moved to California with my parents and we went to a 49ers game and saw the man in action. He won four Super Bowls and 3 MVP awards throughout his career. He made the 49ers a team to reckon with.
megatron 12/13/2000
Greatest QB of all time. He has the most significant comebacks (4th quarter). He has never lost a Super Bowl. Best big game quarterback of all time.
PimpSlky25 12/13/2000
He played for the best team during a decade which they controlled. Known for his Super Bowl wins and throwing the "catch" to Dwight Clark. Personally, he is my favorite quarterback.
topplayah 12/12/2000
He is the best quarterback ever. He was representin' the 49ers. He was the dopest QB of all time. He just was entered in the Hall of Fame. Him and Jerry Rice were a team. But nobody could ever beat Montana.
Marcelo06 12/12/2000
Joe Montana was the best quarterback in the NFL, until he went to the Kansas City Chiefs, but when he was on the 49ers he was the best, able to roll to the right and catch Jerry Rice on the slant. Whenever the 49ers were down in the 4th quarter you didn't have to worry, Joe "the Comeback Kid" Montana would win it for them.
