Whenever Julio Cesar Chavez was fighting it was always a big deal at our house. At his peak he was heads and shoulders above the rest. The left hook to the body was his bread and butter but he was the total package. It wasn't that he did everything spectacular, he just did it damned good, but putting it all together was the key for Chavez. He wasn't particularly fast but he had quick reflexes. On top of that he had a cast iron chin and an indomitable will. That's what made him great and unbeatable, at least while he was in his prime. Two of the most satisfying wins (for me) came against Roger Mayweather, the self proclaimed "Mexican Assassin". The first fight, in 1985, ended by a 2nd round knockout of Mayweather, the second fight, four years later in 1989 ended in the 10th round of a 12 round bout. The fight, at least in my perception that separated him from the rest of the pack was the Edwin Rosario fight. He showed exceptional patience in breaking down Rosario, round by round. He just kept getting stronger. It was a great fight.I don't think anyone ever looked so regal in victory as Chavez. No loud boasts, graceful words for his opponents, and the manner in which he carried himself. He opened up the 1990's with a come from behind stoppage of Meldrick Taylor. Referee Richard Steele stopped the fight with just 5 seconds left on the clock, after Taylor suffered a knockdown, and in my opinion, a brutal beating by Chavez. Taylor was never the same after this fight and was stopped by Chavez in their second fight in in 1994, in the 8th round of a 12 round fight. In the 1990's despite that spectacular win against Taylor, and victories against Greg Haugen, Hector Camacho and Terrence Alli, by 1993 Chavez' was beginning to slip. He fought to a controversial draw against Pernell Whitaker and in January of 1994 he lost a split decision to Frankie Randall. They would fight two more times, splitting the wins.In 1996 Chavez fought a young Oscar De La Hoya. The fight was stopped in the 4th round with De La Hoya getting the win. His last fight was with Grover Wiley on September 17, 2005 in Phoenix, Arizona. Chavez was unable to come out for the fifth round. Chavez fought a total of 115 fights, he won 107 of those fights, 86 by KO, he lost six fights and had 4 draws. Chavez was a remarkable fighter and he had a great career. He remains one of my all time favorites. To steal a line from my all time favorite, Roberto Duran, "When Chavez was Chavez".

Great record but taylor and whitaker were tough for him
lgar76 02/04/2008
Went at least 88 fight without ever losing, held titles in three different weight division, has most title defenses. Has at least 10 years as champion. Best boxing skills ever. First person to be called best fighter pound for pound.
YAKKO 08/24/2007
To me Chavez is one of the gratest fighters out there of his decade. I still remember that fight with Taylor. Taylor was taking it to him but he made a big mistake and that is standing in front of a semi when its coming. Chavez just ruined Taylors career he was never the same after the great Chavez.
HandsOfStone 01/27/2007
Chavez is right outside the top 10 pound-4-pound of all time. a phenomonal fighter who didn't lose in his first 88 fights and who defended world titles more than any other fighter(27 times). Taylor could have outboxed him if he didn't stand and fight as much, but the stoppage was good. Whitaker completaly outclassed him and at best chavez won two rounds. Whitaker is top 10 pound-4pound and chavez is right outside of it, but understand that whitaker beats chavez at any stage of his career, wrong stytle for chavez and way to skilled. The only fighters better than Duran our Robinson and Armstrong and he is the only one who could out-fight chavez. anything chavez did, DURAN DID BETTER.
teodoro1975 04/11/2006
Without a doubt the greatest fighter from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. No one comes close. I still remembered how he murdered all of his opponents. The best accurate puncher I ever saw. Duran hit hard but he just missed too many shots, Chavez would make him pay for that. The best Latino fighter ever.
Mattyp151 02/23/2006
Julio was indeed a great boxer. However, Whitaker was robbed out of a win. Hopefully, JCC's son can become half the boxer he was.

i dont care what anybody says about chavez cause everybody knows that he is and will always be the best boxer ever lived............al que no le guste que chinge su madre!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't like boxers period, because of what they do to their own bodies. This idiot is no exception.
TheEvilSaintEv an 02/25/2005
crippling puncher and body puncher, never say die heart, good stamina, perfect technique and skill, and probly the best chin in history below the middleweight division. had some great fights and victories over the best fighters like ramirez, camacho, rosario, laporte, and taylor. he should have retired earlier though.
Killa11 02/21/2005
In this guys prime There is no one that really beats him today. Here is what i think would happen if he fought the fighters of today. vs. De La Hoya W Majority Decision 12 vs Trinidad W Unan. Decision 12 (3 knockdowns) vs. Sugar Shane W KO 4 vs Kostya Tszu W KO 7 now for the kicker... vs Sugar Ray Leonard L Split Dec 15 vs Duran W TKO 15 and for the best ever. vs. Sugar Ray Robinson L UD 15 He was top 2 best ever. I loved the way he warred all his fights. People forget that he was well past his prime at 32 when he fought Oscar but he is a Mexican fighter and they are usually worn out by age 28 or 29. if this guy doesn't get the props he deserves its crime.
lostprophet 01/30/2005
People who never got to watch Chavez fight in his prime, really missed one of the greatest champs of his or any era. His relentless attacking demeanor. quickness and smarts were why he never lost a fight in his prime. People can talk about Oscar, Tito or Sugar Shane...but in his prime, Julio destroys all of them.
beansntortilla s 01/10/2005
chavez was and will always be a legend .... for those who said he got beat in the talylor match up .. just remember richard steele asked taylor if he was alright and taylor did not respond ..that is when richar steele called the fight ... chavez is the best that ever was
Midaz 12/06/2004
There have not been nor may we ever see another boxer of this calibur. Chavez surpassed Marciano's mark of fights without a loss and continued for 47 more before so. His knowledge, and skill are unmatched and his legendary fights will never be forgotten.
dorsett33 12/03/2004
to talk as of chavez lost to taylor is a joke, the body punches killed taylor, taylor is lucky that the fight wasnt 15 rounds.i would have loved to have seen chavez vs duran, who would have won?
jaywilton 10/15/2004
Chavez was a remarkable-and particulary consistent fighter. All the greats lost sooner or later;after going undefeated for 90-some fights,Chavez was overdue-and older. In any case,he is one of the truly memorable greats, ever.
rollinstoneblu es 09/21/2004
The Greatest Fighter of All Time. He destroyed the best and had a better start to his career than Sugar Ray Robinson and Willie Pep along the way. He holds all time title fight and attendence records. Nobody in the last 50 years even comes close to breaking both of those records.
yahomiemaniac 08/02/2004
chavez is the greatest light welterwieght of ALL time... had a good chin and no one could have beat him in his prime
latinboxingfan 07/21/2004
He didn't just win, he destroyed people. As for Meldrick Taylor, the poor guy went to the hospital and never recovered from the physical beating Chavez gave him. Chavez went home and had a beer after the fight. And as for Pernell Whittaker, you can't beat a great champion if your engine's stuck in reverse for 12 rounds
ortizd 07/14/2004
he was the best pound-for-pound boxer in his prime fellas
StevePI 07/11/2004
I did give him four stars but only five star fighters are among the all time greats in my book. One of the more overrated fighters of the modern era.
Mistachill 07/07/2004
Great, great fighter BUT...Taylor had him beat and everybody knows it. Whitaker was a victim of the most bogus decision I ever witnessed watching boxing. As much as I love boxing, I actually turned my back on the sport for a long time because I was so disgusted with that injustice. Don't think he would've beaten prime Duran or any other top fighter with great hand speed.
louiethe20th 06/14/2004
Longevity has to count for something, but he should have quit sooner.
BIG CRAIG 05/20/2004
It never stops AMAZING me how our feelings about a person or situation clouds our judgement. Julio's greatness is matter of opinion, but Taylor BEATING him like he stole something is FACT. Taylor took Chavez to a skool that thanks to Richard Steele and people like Chavez fans - closed before more students had the opportunity to come and learn. He hit Chavez SOOO often SOOO many times he was just plain exhausted by the 12th round. Beit fan or not - you know DARN well that the fight should not have been stopped (2 seconds left or 1:00 min) and that Chavez not only lost his Championship, but MOST importantly GOT HIS A_ _ WHIPPED.
doctorseven 04/19/2004
chavez was a 3 time world champion and was 87-0-1 before his first loss. He never ducked people and always fought hard. A true ring legend and the best ever at welterweight.
dsds 11/19/2003
Chavez vs Taylor, 1990, did not only showed what a good boxer is in terms of punches but also showed what a champion is made of: heart, discipline, endurance, respect.
St Martin 11/18/2003
Greatest fighter ever under 147lbs pity he carried on too long and ruined a remarkable record. Top 10 easily
beck2ratm 09/17/2003
NEVER QUIT AND ALWAYS KEPT MOVING FOWARD. THE BEST BODY PUNCHER I HAVE EVER SEEN AND ALWAYS RESPECTFUL. CAN'T BEAT THAT.
jake jr 08/26/2003

sd_chargerfan 08/15/2003
ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME
sada 08/09/2003
he was great but had judges and refs preserve his undefeated record.example...meldrick taylor and pernell whitacker. he wasnt even the greatest mexican fighter of all time let alone hispanic fighter of all time. de la hoya, salvador sanchez and duran were greater
erixcson 08/02/2003
3 words, "The greatest legend".
kingtony 08/02/2003

Khaosai 08/02/2003
The greatets mexican fighter of all time and one of the greatest pound 4 pound, a living legend who fought everyone, a true champ and the greatets jr welter of all time hands down.
kid bazooka 07/17/2003
Chavez is simply the greatets of all time, steel chin, superb bodypuncher and a master boxer never lost in his prime he was virtualy unbeatable. I don't care what anyone says he and Robinson stand alone as the two greatest of al time
Roy_Freddy 05/26/2003
Julio is a very hard working fighter . He never ducked anyone and his work ethic was absolutely terrific. In my opinion, he is not the greatest fighter pound for pound ( I believe Duran was better) but he is an awesome fighter.
iceflesh 05/10/2003
Pound for Pound the Greatest of All Time!!! 6 Time World Champion, 100 plus fights,83 K.O.'s., Between 1980-82 a string of 20 straight KO's,3 different weight classes, etc... These are stats that will probably never be equaled (especially in todays PPV society). Like many boxers he should have ended his career earlier; however, he never ducked a fight. Highlight of his career destroying Taylor (Chavez-Taylor I)in one of the greatest fights of all time. Lowlights, being manhandled by forklift driver Willy Wise. Without a doubt, no holds barred, the most prolific, ferocious, honorable, passionate giver of chingasos of all time.
Enrique Nunez 04/18/2003
The greatest fighter of all time. Chavez didn't just beat the best of his era in their prime, he destroyed them!
Christian Gonzalez 03/27/2003
The greatest body puncher ever!! nobody cant beat him at the age of 30 even DLH!!
allknowing 02/14/2003
greatest fighter pound for pound in the history of boxing. He should be the one called "the greatest". Had the hardest chin in boxing history. Had he fought de la hoya, gonzalez earlier he would have knocked them all out. Also the best body puncher you will ever see. ...sorry i copied and pasted but thats all facts..he astayed around too long but he fought the best and in that weight class ...he is the all time greatest champion to ever live "El GRAN CHAMPEON MEXICANO"
aper422 11/03/2002
