One of my own personal favourite's from the 70's although he did win the title on a foul. Didn't like his attitude but got to say he was pretty awesome

In his prime he was the best. Great chin, hands, and boxing style. should have retired after first Leonard fight. Age was catching up with him.

Duran always gave you the impression that he was fighting for his life in the ring. That's what made him so exciting to watch. He is by far the best latino fighter ever and the greatest of the modern era. Duran was not used to having guys "dancing" in front of him instead of fighting when he said no mas. His frustration got the best of him. But I never questioned his manhood. In fact the latino mentality is that only faggots dance when they fight. (trust me I'm latino). So there now you know the rest of the story.

I do not pretend to change anyone's opinion. I give him 4 stars only because of the "No mas" bout. Duran fought a lot excellent fighters of all styles. Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Europeans, Asians, Americans.. not to mention other great Panamenians as well. He was overconfident and stubborn in most cases, which made him unique and did a lot of damage for him. Simply the best lightweight ever...his true weight class..!!! During his career he had the ability to adapt to each style. I admire his ambition in other weight classes because of lack of competition (1972-1979) The only fighter in the same league, and would have been great to see them against eachother was SALVADOR SANCHEZ from Mexico, which died in a car accident and Should be in the Top 20 of all times.

He was a real animal, a real predator. If he saw another fighter on the street or at a resturant or something, he'd rush over and hit him. He never fought Alexis Arguello in the ring, but they sure fought on the street. From what I hear, Alexis got the the better out of it.

One of the greatest lightweights of all time back in the 1970's. He was quick on his feet, hard to hit, and possessed power in each mitt. His biggest wins were over Sugar Ray Leonard, Ken Buchanan, Esteban Dejesus, Carlos Palomino, Pipino Cuevas, Davey Moore, and Iran Barkley. But after 1980, he was not as devoted to his boxing career as he once was, and his skills began to slowly erode. He lost to Hearns, Hagler, Leonard twice, Pazienza twice, Camacho twice, Laing, Lawlor, Omar Gonzalez, Robbie Sims, William Joppy, and maybe one or two others I'm forgetting. But he had a great chin, as only Hearns could knock him out. Lawlor stopped him, but it was because Duran had a shoulder injury. Nine years later, Duran avenged that loss.
THE CHUMP 05/13/2003
Duran is without a doubt one of the top 5 fighters that ever lived. He moved up in weight to fight a taller, faster, younger sugar ray and people forget that.Duran showed when he was older how truly great he was when he knocked down Paz and barely lost to a young tough fighter 30 pounds over his prime weight!!! He had stamina, power, a great chin, and Tenacity of a pit bull. Truly a man's man in the ring. Just watch a tape of him in his prime and you get chills.....I can only find 1 fault of him at lightweight and that is not giving another great fighter Ken Buchanan a rematch. I still watch the Iran Barkley fight with utter amazement.. Duran is and always will be a RING LEGEND.....
Southga 04/10/2003
Sugar Ray Leonard beat this guy. He was OK, but he wasn't great.
macho 03/09/2003
aged 37 duran gave the greatest performance of his career when defeating barkley in one of the greatest fights ever. this is the mark of a great fighter .duran, robinson and ali the only boxers that can be truly regarded as boxing greats
Mr. Freeze 03/05/2003
Duran was great. One of the all-time bests. He dominated at Lightweight, pretty much unbeatable. It's too bad that he partied too much at got out of shape for the 2nd Leonard fight, but he was already a legend by then and beat some good fighters after that too. Why didn't Duran and Alexis Argueollo ever fight each other?
cevaking 02/21/2003
decent boxer, but his no mass contest against leonard and his crushing knockout to thomas hearns shows to me that when the pressure was on, he didn't have what it took to be the man.....
DeVaughnucci 02/19/2003
over 100 wins in the modern era ,simply the best fighter I ever saw fight in person, pounded Leonard when they were both in their prime ,humiliated himself second fight with Leonard , but what he did after that will always make Duran a Hero to me.We all fall but not to many get back up .Manos de piedra the best I ever saw .After watching Tyson, makes me realize just how special Duran,Leonard,Haigler and Hearns really are.
rogue 02/19/2003
A thug. He was an ignorant thug whose brain never matched his physical talents. He could, have been great, one of the greatest all-time in his weight class, but his ego got the better of him and his machismo made him drag it out too long.
Marcellus 02/16/2003
One of the greatest lightweights of all time, along with Benny Leonard and Joe Gans. As a welter and middleweight, had some nice fights in the 80's, like first Leondard and DAvey Moore. Beating Barkley in 91 impressive. But the no mas, ko by Hearns, loss to Hagler hurt image as a welter and middle. Basically fought on 20 years past his prime. Duran as a great fighter ended in 1980. Robinson, on the other hand, was the greatest middleweight in his second decade of fighting, as well as the greastest welter in his first decade. Duran was great first decade only. Did not bring his punch with him when he moved up, in contrast to Armstron.
allknowing 02/14/2003
man i wanna give him the respect he deserves but when he said "no mas" that hurt..definetly a great in his wait class but not the greatest
benwhunt 02/11/2003
a ferocious puncher and an all time great boxer to say hes overrated is just naiive... his only losses were when he in essence defeated himself as some people have previously stated... when he was properly prepared he was absolutely unstoppable.. i mean he went up in weight and beat the sh*t out of sugar ray leonard (one of top 10 greatest fighters) in his prime... considering how many wars he was in to fight from age 16 to 50 is insane.. perhaps the toughest boxer of all time.. also one of the craziest... not only a latino legend but a boxing legend as well... he is not overrated at all, in fact he is underrated becuz he didnt get enough attention in the states
whatdahieu 01/24/2003
"hands of stone" enough said! The best lightweight ever top 10 boxer.
Guitar Coyote 01/04/2003
no mas gets a five thanks to his lawyer

Duran was a modern day Jack Dempsey. Power in both hands, good speed and very strong. As he moved up in weight he changed his style and became more of a boxer, a hard thing to do for any athlete. One of the greatest in-fighters of all time. The first time I saw him fight was his bout with Ray Lampkin. A vicious fight that ended with Lampkin on the floor in the 14 th round from left hook. Lampkin was out for 30 minutes. His first fight with Leonard,Davey Moore, and Marvin Hagler were amoung the best fights I ever saw. Over the hill, he almost beat a prime Hagler, and ended Moores career. One of the top ten all time greats.

Duran is truly a legend! Beyond the fact that he was hands down the greatest lightweight of all time, he continued to win fights over FIVE decades (one of only two fighters ever to do so). As a Five Time World Champion, he continued fighting past fifty and was consistently a threat to beat everyone right through his final fight - a world championship bout in 2001 with Hector "Macho" Camacho. While some may argue that "Los Manos De Piedras" boxed too long - everyone should pay homage to the fact that he was able to do so, while remaining a dangerous warrior, because of how great he was. I was very fortuate to be present for several of his last fights (including his final two bouts) and witnessed firsthand how even at the end he showed flashes of brillance and technique that many of today best fighters simply do not possess. Best of all, however, was the fact that Duran is a man who knew his greatness and believed in it thoroughly. He spoke of it and displayed it proudly both inside and outside of the ring. Every fighter he fought from Ken Buchanan to Sugar Ray Leonard to Vinny Paz to Jorge Castro will testify to this and can show their bruises as proof!

overrated

Duran was a fearsome warrior, a slugger with the flexible tools of a boxer. As he put on weight and age he relied more on these tools than the slugging, at lightweight, none of his contemporaries could withstand his assault. His no mas against Leonard, his crushing knockout loss to Hearns, cannot be overlooked. They mar him. And by no means was he the greatest lightweight of all time, either, as Henry Armstrong was able to hold the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles simultaneously. He also won the middleweight title, but the judges ripped him off. I don't see Duran beating Armstrong, and Duran against Benny Leonard, Packey McFarland or Tony Canzoneri are pick 'em fights.
CanadaSucks 11/24/2002
NO MAS prevents him from having 5 stars. . .great lightweight fighter. . .incredible career. Like many fighters, he hung around a little too long.
cple 11/23/2002
Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran was the greatest lightweight of all-time, and that's very high praise considering some of the the great, great 135 pound fighters we had the pleasure of seeing, such as: Benny Leonard, Henry Armstrong, Joe Gans, Pernell Whitaker, etc. IMO, Duran was better than all of them. Duran overwhelmed the likes of DeJesus, Leonard, Buchanan, Moore, and Barkley with his boxing ability, punching power, tenacity, and relentlessness. NO ONE could survive his onslaught at lightweight. His six year reign at 135 made him an all-time great, but he continued on to win titles at 147, 154, and 160. Simply a monster.
BigBadTA 11/23/2002
the whole "no mas" fiasco completely tarnished my image. Here was this supposed tough guy crying like a baby in the ring. If he had just quit at his peak, i would think of him as one of, if not the best.
v the final battle 11/22/2002
i have to be objective here and give credit where credit is due. although i hated this guy. he was a great boxer and fought several classic fights. one of the best of the middleweights of the 80's in probably the deepest class of middleweights ever period. no mas.
Rduranmar 11/17/2002
Has to be among the the top 10 greatest fighters of all-time.Fought all the top fighters from 135 to 167 pounds. During the last 20 years of his career, he was almost always fighting bigger and younger opponents.Even in his fourties, and fighting on memory alone, he was giving fighters like Pazianza and Camacho all they could handle. He even knocked Pazienza down in their fight, and in his first fight against Camacho, Duran won at least 8 of the 12 rounds, only to lose a decision that sugar ray leonard called a early christmas present for camacho!!
contender 10/19/2002
Simply one the best three all time! His only real opponent was himself. Hard hitter and ring general. If there is is such a thing as the best pound for pound ever, one of the top three.
Frankie Da Bull 10/11/2002
VICIOUS. And if you dont agree, just ask him. Of course you'll have to wait to come conscious again before you can hear him. The original Macho Man.
poclizard 07/09/2001
The best fighter ever for his weight class.
Becky222 06/05/2001
Truly the greatest fighter in his class of all time. On par with the greatest Muhammad Ali! He whipped Leonard when leonard dared to really fight him. Leonard was a chump.
maddmarxx 01/09/2001
Duran made the same mistake as most fighters,he hung around too long. This will inevitably affect his ranking amongst the greatest of all time. Before the"no mas" debacle,I found him to be the most ferocious fighter that I have witnessed.
Johnny Roulette 01/07/2001
Hands Of Stone. Beat the crap out of Sugar Ray in the first fight(when they were both in their prime, mentally and physically). He ate and drank himself out of the second fight the night before the bout. He walked away because he knew he had screwed himself up and couldn't fight up to his standards that night. He gave Ray enough rounds to put him down, but he had to do it himself because Ray just didn't have the power to do it. Duran stuck around too long, but he was the best in his weight class of his era. He won more than a hundred fights. He suffered some in the media because his English was terrible, so it wasn't like he had commercial appeal.
magellan 06/08/2000
The first Spanish I ever learned was "No Mas" - compliments of Mr. Duran.
