hey, i'm Italian, and i must admit two things, first.....if marciano wasn't Italian, 95% of Italians would say he fought a bunch of OLD WASHED UP HAS BEENS.....guys who were still fighting b/c they were broke, they were out of shape and also the rest were nobodies that went nowhere mostly (some of which didn't even have a win when they fought the rock, many others had losing records when they faced him). bottom line, nuff said right there personally....his 49-0 is definately blown up and he got a gift against lastraza in the first fight and people cried it was fixed, something his fans never talk about....when he fought, younger talented opponents as an amature, he lost a few and had been ko'd more than once (younger opponents tend to be able to follow up when they hurt you and not run out of gas).....as a pro, he came out in a weak era of HW's, where the hero's of before were gone or faded, and like today the division was open, charles stunk most of his career, he was a late bloomer b/c he was one of the best of what's out there guys.....does anyone here really think PAZIENZA would have beaten DURAN if they fought when DURAN was 28-29-30yrs old as opposed to 42.....or TONEY BEATS HOLYFIELD 7-8 yrs ago, if you do, get off the boards! lol, all kidding aside, paz would get killed by a young/younger duran and toney isn't even a match for evander when he was the real deal.....his punch power, well he did hit hard yes, but when you fight a bunch of who are theys and avg guys, you will get a lot of big ko's.....when you are fighting some old, out of shape, broke has beens....your punches get harder and more damaging as they run out of steam (and legs), the ring commentator even mentions how joe louis was just a shadow of his former self when he and the rock fought, and made mention to how louis was tiring.....the other side of the coin i must say.....he had tremendous heart and took on what they put in front of him.....not his fault, that is who was out there....a class act and classy champion.....great for his time, not all time

Other than old washed up fighters like the one's mentioned, what great fighter did he defeat? It's a who's who of tomato cans!

I don't know if Rocky Marciano can be called the greatest heavyweight fighter of all-time. But if heart can be measured, there was none better. Not particularly known for style, nor skill, Marciano nonetheless fought with reckless abandon and fury. A brawler who was addicted to exercise as if it were a drug, Marciano was a fearsome fighter with brute power AND an unmatched threshhold for pain. And no one, with the possible exception of a prime Mike Tyson, had a punch that was as lethal. Looking at Jersey Joe Walcott's deformed face as he took the famed vicious shot, which Marciano threw with grim intention, was witnessing the most famous knockout punch (and the most painful) ever. In the end, Rocky Marciano must be measured by his heart, as no one was better from that aspect.

Without A doubt the greatest fighter to ever live. he beat all the greats of his ara NEVER LOST no other boxer can claim that distinction, no matter what kind kind of opposition you are fight theres always that on guy whos got you number. winning 49 straight fights is basically impossible it will never happen again. and as far as his opposion gos. LaStarza: undefeted befor he faced marciano. Mathews: 73-3 got knocked out in second. Charles best light heavywgt of all time and a work horse as heavywgt champ beat him twice. as far as lewis and walcott. Lewis was still quality opposition, walcott got better with age. Anyone who dosn't rank him in the top three HWts of all time is eather a complete Ideot, or dosn't now boxing therfor has no room to open there mouth.

Have any of you ever heard any of the quotes of the fighters that he has fought?(i.e. fighters that lost to him 49-0-0 43KO) Every single one of them has said that he is the hardest hitter in boxing. One fighter said that it hurt to even bump into him because he was so hard. His knockout punch has been measured to have more explosive energy than an armor piercing bullet and to have the energy to lift 1000 pounds at rest 1 foot. There were many occasions in which Rocky Marciano was on the verge of losing a fight and his corner would tell him that the only way he could win was with a knockout punch and every time he would end it that very next round. For all of you who think Ali could take Marciano, it has been said that Marciano dropped Ali with a single body punch when Ali made Rocky look like a fool during the filming of a computer generated fight to see who would win between the two with pure statistics. Marciano was 46 years old when this incident occured.

Marciano (correct me if any of this is wrong): Fought 5 former champions (obviously 5-0 against them), average age when he fought them 37! Louis 37, Walcott 38/39, Charles 32/33, Moore 42). Compared that to Ali who fought 17 former champs (12-5 against them) and their average age was only 31. First 14 fights of his career: Average record of opponents 2-2 (combined record 30-25) Fought 6 opponents in their first pro bout. 9 fights against fighters with no wins (combined record 0-8) Had a 9 fight streak of opponents with a combined record of 14-34 in their previous six bouts before facing Maricano (29% winning percentage). Had a 22 fight streak where 19 opponents lost their previous fight before facing Marciano (so during that stretch the best way to get a fight with Marciano was to lose match prior to challenging him). During the stretch of best competition (1951-55), Marcianos opponents had a record of 50-21 in their previous 6 fights before facing him (70% winning percentage) Marciano had tremendous heart & will, great puncher, probably got the most out of his abilities of any of the top 10-15 heavyweights of all time. And I give him a lot of credit for not falling victim to his own myth and he knew when it was time to get out and stay retired. However...people seem to forget an important part of boxing, defense. Folks want to give Marciano a lot of credit for getting the crap beat out of him before winning his fights. Some more little recognized Marciano facts: * In his biggest fights he beat an over the hill Joe Louis, a 38 year old champion to win the belt (Walcott), beat a 39 year old ex-champ in the rematch, twice came close to losing to past his prime Ezzard Charles, and got knocked down by a 42 year old light-heavyweight (Archie Moore). * In the second Charles fight (the one when Marciano's nose was split in half), his corner was literally allowed to stuff gauze in his nose to slow down the bleeding! Who ever heard of a corner being allowed to do that in a fight? Why didn't they just go ahead and let them stitch him up? * Marciano had a fight earlier in his career that ended in a draw (I believe the first LaStarza fight). But at the time (because so many fights were ending in a draw) the commission came up with this bogus solution of allowing the ref to award a point (essentially allowing the ref to choose a winner). Of course, Marciano being the up and coming fighter (not to mention having Mob/Mafia support) the ref made the predictable decision. Having said all of this, Marciano was one of the all-time greats, but he is clearly in the middle of the pack when you rate him against the heavyweights most consider as the greatest. And if matched up in a fight against them, Marciano gets the crap beat out of him by Ali, Holmes, Foreman and Louis. Probably get beat by Lennex Lewis, Liston and a young Mike Tyson (yes, a young Tyson probably beats Marciano). And would struggle against Joe Frazier and Holyfield in his prime. And anyone who doesn't think Marciano gets beat easily by Ali, just referance the guy who gave him the most trouble - a past his prime Ezzard Charles, who was a excellent boxer. Ali was 10 times more skilled and 10 times the boxer Charles was. And Marciano could beat Ali? Come on now! My one star is based on how I rank him among the greats (Ali, Louis, Holmes, Johnson, Dempsey, etc.) and not a reflection that I think he was terrible. I also want to balance some of these folks who only know 49-0 and base their rating strictly on that.

The Rock gets a 4 because of not really his fault lack of quality opposition. Otherwise i would easily have given him a 5. He was 49-0 with 43kos rare fighter who loved training. Had one of the best punches in boxing history for heavyweights. Was a world heavyweight boxing champion for approx 4 years. Retired undeafeated. But beating a Old Joe louis who needed money, struggling against a old ezzard charles, kind of makes you think that he was in a dead era. But a true gentleman good fighter.

Rookie Tyson fans must probably say: What? Another Rocky Marciano fight on Classic Sports Network. Sit down and watch it. Closely. Sit down and watch Joe Louis. These are the fans who wonder why old time boxing experts would ever pick Joe Louis over Ali. Because they witnessed him. If you watched Marciano you'd simply say DEVESTATING! His ko of the old Luis was more brutal than Tyson's ko of Holmes. As far as being slow, an old timer said he ran 10 miles daily to keep his weight @ less than 188 lbs. because he felt it increased his speed. His volume of punches, the rate of activity, was greater than Ali's...Tho not prettier. I hope that young boxing experts who think today's bigger/better heavyweights reconsider their opinions after the KLITCHKO brothers have been exposed. I've known it for a long time

Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano & Muhammad Ali: The Greatest Heavyweights of All time. Ali could have beat em all... I agree with FRACON, he was (Rocky -- R.I.P.) the SMARTEST of ALL - TIME!

His record speaks for itself. He had great right hand and a hard chin. But....when he was champ there was a huge void in heavyweight boxing. He was good, but have no real in prime fighters takes alot from his greatest title. He won the title fighting a 38 year old Joe Walcott(who floored him ROUND ONE of the fight). Almost lost twice to an aging Ezzard Charles, beat up over the hill Joe Louis, and was almost knocked out by Archie Moore.

Lots of bullsh*t being said. I bet alot of you never knew the RESPECT that Rocky's opponents had for him. Archie Moore said punching Rocky was like punching a brick wall. Ali, said that when he heard about Rocky Marciano's victory when he was a kid it inspired him to be the greatest JUST LIKE ROCKY. So before you get up on a racist high horse you better realize and recognize that alot of black fighters gave Marciano TONS of respect. I'm not going to theorize about whom from one generation will beat whomever from another generation. It's just not a comparison you can make. The only way to really know is to pit them against each other and that can't happen. Marciano is dead, and most of the guys people are saying are better then him are either old men or dead as well. Another thing I have a problem with is the idea that fighters are washed up at 35 or 39 years old, it's just total bullshit. I bet you don't realize this but in todays era most boxers don't get going until their 30's, ESPECIALLY heavyweights. And you have to remember that in ANY sport EXPERIENCE counts for a whole heck of alot. Fucn Bernard Hopkins, the unified middleweight champion for years now is 39, so you wan't to tell me he's washed up?? The guy can still fight obviously, he has 3 belts. My point is, the guys Marciano fought may have been aging but that doesn't mean they were washed up. And you can get all technical about his wins but you know ALI GOT HIS A$$ HANDED TO HIM on an occassion or two. I love how everyone rants about Ali, he was the greatest, well, f*ck that, he was obviously good, but not the greatest. He got the sh*t beat out of him by Joe Frazier and had to resort to goading George Foreman. Rope a dope my a$$, thats called being a pvssy and not fighting. Ali shouldn't have won his third fight with Joe Frazier, I've seen it and I can tell you that Ali got his a$$ kicked. In fact, after the fight he almost passed out. Smokin Joe was ready to roll for 10 more rounds if need be, Ali was literally on his last leg. I don't think he could have stood another minute. It was a herculean effort of will by Ali to keep standing against Frazier who really throttled him in that fight, but just because he withstood it doesnt mean he didn't get fucn throttled. make no bones about it Ali got whooped by Frazier. And you know George Foreman dropped Frazier like a bag of crap... So maybe the fact that Ali lost twice to Frazier and got his a$$ handed to him in his third victory says something to put his legend in perspective. Anyhow, Marciano isn't the greatest either, but at 5'10 187 pounds the guy was barely a heavyweight, but he beat some of the GREATEST of all time, I don't care if they were older, they STILL GOT WHOOPED. Joe Louis got knocked the fvck out, it wasn't even close. Many people seem to forget that Rocky didn't just beat Joe Louis, HE KNOCKED HIM THROUGH THE ROPES like a rag doll. Also remember that Rocky didn't grow up fighting, he took it up late in his life and just had a natural talent for punching and an inborn toughness that was phenomenal. You can talk all the shit you wan't, but in the end, it is obvious Marciano is trully ONE of the greatest of all time.

Rocky Marciano was the greatest fighter of all time, none of Muhammed Alis pretty dancing around would have saved him from Rockys deadly attack, Rocky Marciano was the toughest guy ever he was the best heavyweight back then, and with all the big heavyweights now a days guess what all those hugging timewasters would get F----- up and they would get knocked out and so brutalized, none of them; lewis, tyson, ali no all time greats should be even considered in his league hes an animal Tyson's an animal? He beat them all, and that you can not dispute. Only 6 of his fights went to the cards. Bottom line: he pounded everything into submission, and was relentless. Lennox Lewis would have gotten seriously hurt...not just beaten, not just KO'd; HURT by the 5'9 185 pound Rock. If Rahman and McCall could KO Lennox, Marciano would've left him in ICU for a week. Rocky broke ARMS on people when they put up their guard, and his gloves weren't loaded. He may have been the greatest puncher ever. He hit like a mule kicks. The KO punch on Walcott and knocking Louis through the ropes may have been the two most devestating punches ever landed in the sport.
