The best pound-per-pound and most exciting boxer (I've only seen him on film; he was before my time) that I've ever come across. An average size build, he was very ruthless, fast, and pretty powerful. There will probably never, unfortunately, be another one like him.

Hey Rightwing. Here`s to your ignorant comment. Wasn`t Robinson beat and Floored for the 1st time by a white boy named Jake Lamotta?Robinson also got an ass whoopin by yet another white boy named Carmen Basilio.Bitch.

Sugar Ray Robinson is no Holyfield, but he's great in my book.

RightWing hater... which wing, exactly, is racial based hate on? The Left? Sadly, Robinson's the best ever. Absolutely untouchable as a welterweight.

DON'T KNOW WHO IS SECOND BEST, BUT HE IS WAY BACK.

Just cause Marciano was better!!

Like most of us, I've only seen Robinson's fights on grainy old film. My opinion is biased by my father's, who saw him in action in person. In his prime he was clearly the best of his time and (as is so often over looked these days) he was always a gentleman.

Regarding rightwing's stupid racial comment, the only guy who beat Sugar Ray in his prime was Lamotta. Forgetting the loss to Tiger Jones, due to rust, Sugar Ray had 3 losses in the 1950's: Turpin, Fulmer, and Basilio (2 white guys). So this is a stupid, ignorant statement. By the way, Roy Jones Jr. is ducking Darius Michalewski and and Lennox Lesis is ducking Vladimir (not Vitalo) Klitschko. So take you racial stupidity and shove it.

In terms of both skill and accomplishment no fighter rates higher than Ray Robinson. No fighter had more ways to beat you, no fighter had bigger heart. And he retained these magnificent tools well into his thirties. He was not unbeatable, no fighter is unbeatable. He had weaknesses. His chin was only average, he had off nights, nights when a hungry, unorthodox fighter could outhustle him, and he ducked Charley Burley. I personally don't think any fighter gets the better of Burley in his prime. But whatever kept Burley from accomplishment; there was no what if when it came to winning titles and making history for Robinson. The counter left hook that coldcocked Gene Fullmer is the most perfect punch in boxing history. And that was Sugar Ray's greatest skill, he had a magic club in his golfbag no competitor could wield, and he often used it when he needed it most.

The best fighter of all time. Ray had it all -- power, technical skills, ring generalship, heart, and tenacity.
BigBadTA 11/30/2002
pound for pound, one of the greatest boxers of all time. He was very talented, extremely quick, and eceptionally strong. He was one of the greatest ever, maybe second only to Rocky Marciano, but it's close.
charles.dolby 11/18/2002
greatest pound for pound boxer ever
cple 11/07/2002
The greatest fighter of all-time, p4p. He had it all: heart, power in both hands, speed, defense, chin, reflexes...you name it, he had it. Beat more hall of famers than any other fighter. Closest thing we have had to a perfect fighter...UNBEATABLE in his prime.
mr B 01/09/2002
No question hee was the best ever.
Johnny Roulette 01/12/2001
He had what all true greats need...a rival. His LaMotta fights will never be forgotten. He was quick, skilled and powerful...you don't see many with all three qualities. Only Ali put it all together the way Ray did.
firelord35 12/24/2000
without a doubt, the greastest of all time.
Shafty 01/01/2000
