I have a relative who is hooked on prescription tranquilizers and antidepressants. It's heartbreaking to watch the medications destroy her life. Her doctor tells her that she needs them. She shakes constantly while she is on them and spends whole days at a time sleeping and crying. Every now and then she will take a "break" from them, and she is a completely different person then. When she is off of the medication she is happy, enjoying life, visiting relatives, going to church, and spending time outdoors riding our family horses. She is NOT depressed when she is off the medication! She originally started taking them because of some stress in her life (which in my opinion could have been handled with some counseling or family support), then got hooked. The original problem that got her started on the tranquilizers is long gone. If she hadn't gotten started on the pills in the first place she would be living a much better (and happier) life!

Far too many Psychiatrists prescribe such drugs to patients who are nervous, anxiety prone or have sleep diffuculties. While there are some people with chemical imbalances who might benefit from Tranquilizers, most people would be better off getting to the underlying CAUSE of their problems rather than medicating away the symptoms. As far a using them to "get high",they are no safer than illegal drugs and no better than booze.

I like tranquilizers/painkillers. Pop a couple and you feel like your whole body is wrapped in a blanket. You feel happy plus if you have a lil' insomnia, pop some and you wont have it for long.

Tranquilizers are another class of drugs that is labeled in a misleading manner. I've heard numerous people question depressants by saying "Why would anyone ever want to be depressed?" However, as many people know from experiencing Alcohol, the most popular depressant, that is hardly the truth. Tranquilizers are the same boat...why someone would want to be Tranquilized is because of the benefit in reducing anxiety, promoting healthy sleep, and also a recreational euphoria. Very similar to depressants, but OD on these and you're more likely to fall asleep for 12 hours than you are to die.
