I'll give him a two because he has done some good things in his community and he has not deterred from his beliefs, no matter how dumb they are. This man pays too much attention to race and is a false prophet as someone else said- he simply wants to emulate Martin Luther King, Jr., which I'm sorry to say, nobody can do. Like this guy or not, he does speak up for a disenfranchised and powerless constituency that doesn't have many public figures championing its rights and needs. If it weren't for this guy, tens of thousands of poor and dispossessed people who are that way through no fault of their own wouldn't have anyone looking out for them, and they do certainly deserve that right as Americans. Sharpton does go overboard quite often and is a bit too fond of political grandstanding, but that's typical of the partisan figures in this country who try to pass themselves off as "leaders." In this, he is no worse than Newt, Trent, Rush, Savage, Shawn or any of those other ideologues. He will always be haunted by his mishandling of the T. Brawley fiasco/hoax and his continued stubbornness to come clean about it, but, then again, that's no different from any other political figure who's pulled pinheaded stunts in the past and won't admit to being wrong. If I had a $5 bill for every so-called "leader" who fits this description, I'd be retired and living in luxury. However, Sharpton is important because he promotes the concerns of people living in the urban areas of this country, and those people, not the parasites, mooches, slackers and losers who live in the presumed "Heartland," are the ones who make the greatest contributions to the wellbeing of this country. Urban dwellers fuel the economy of the nation more than those in the backwater, pay more taxes and receive less government largesse, contribute much more to charitable causes, etc., and it is this constituency that is continually short-changed by Washington and usually demonized by the political right. Sharpton speaks up for the concerns of those breadwinners as well as the unfortunate, and he has to be admired for that.

I admit, this rating is a little high, but it is in response to those of you who are giving "1" as your rating. Anyone who is no racist or a die hard liberal can not listen to this man and not at least respect him as a intelligent, very articulate man. With his current race for president Al Sharpton is forcing the currently lame democratic party to focus on liberal issues rather then just constantly cattering to the GOP. I'm tired of Democratic candidates coming out and pretty much being just moderate democrates. The only way for this party to retake the government is to seperate it self from the republican party. Al Sharpton understands this, and stands up for this. Whether you agree with his opinions or not, you have to give him some credit and respect him as a positive leader of the African American community.

It's still a free country. If the Rev wants to run, so be it. Forgive the cynicism, but the Rev must be working for the Republican National Committee. He will do more than anyone in getting out the Republican vote while ensuring that the Democrats stay home and watch TV. On a more philosophical note, let all the evils that lurk in the mud hatch out. If we have all these problems that the Rev says we have, then let him run and let's confront these issues head-on. And, the way we confront these issues is at the ballot box. Considering that the Rev has not been elected after three tries at major office, I'm wondering whether this campaign will make any difference other than enhancing his stature among his followers. No a bad opportunity for a consummate opportunist. So far, the electorate's answer has been a resounding NO! His effectiveness seems to diminish beyond the disaffected whom he has suceeded in marginalizing in American society. Great work Rev. I recall, on GWB's inauguration day, the Rev. Al had a rally in downtown Washington and was saying "we whipped your Daddy and we're gonna whip you too". In 1995, seven people were killed at Freddy's Fashion Mart on 125th Street...Sharpton and his National Action Network turned a dispute between a Jewish tenant who rented the space for his store (Freddy's) from a black church into a racial riot. They shoted racial slurs like "Jew Bastards." or "Blood sucking Jews." These proesters also threaten to burn the Jew store down. One of them did. A man with a long criminal record, Abubunde Mulocko shot three whites and a Pakistani in cold blood (he had mistaken the light-skinned Pakistani for a Jew) and then set the fire that killed five Hispanics, one Guyanese and one black, the security guard who the protesters had taunted as a "cracker lover." He was one of Al Sharpton's followers. 3. AL Sharpton threatens a NY Post reporter, Rod Dreher. Rod wrote that Aaliyah's death was a tragedy, but nobody knew who she was. The so-called presidential candidate called Rod a "racist" and said "We will bring down anybody who tells us how to mourn our own." Does a reverend talk like that? I would expert a Mafia boss to say those things. 4. He uses the police brutality issue to further his own career. 5. Sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating federal ground in Puerto Rico. Suddenly, he announced that he wants to become president. It show that he is doing it for the media attention not to help the poor citizens in Puerto Rico. 6. The recent mayor's election. Al would launch a hate campaign against any politician who refused to kiss his ass. He has the nerve to call Mark Green a "racists." If everyone got along, Al Sharpton would be out of a job. BTW, I am a Democrat.

What I want to know is why is it that some black people - like you for instance - invariably respond to any criticism or dissent from white people by calling us "racist." Are you insecure, my brother? Are you frightened by uppity honkies who don't kowtow to political correctness? You say that "White America" is afraid of "nonsubmissive" African-Americans, but I think you may be misinterpreting the reactions you've been reading on this clipboard. My sense is that most of the people who have commented here genuinely respect Martin Luther King, not exactly a submissive African-American. The reason we despise Sharpton is not because he is an outspoken black man, but rather because he is a barely literate black buffoon. If Sharpton's brain were one tenth the size of his mouth he might actually be a worthwhile human being, but it isn't and he's not. I think the problem with black individuals like you is that you are badly confused. Dr. King was the moral equivalent of a lion; Al Sharpton, on the other hand, is the moral equivalent of a ghetto cockroach. When you can't tell the difference between a lion and cockroach, you are CONFUSED, my brother. I do wish to sincerely thank you, however, for being straight up with us. The Tawana Brawley episode demonstrated that truth and justice are much less important to Al Sharpton than his own self-promotion. He should choose his fights more carefully and stick around to help with the less glamourous work instead of jetting off as soon as the cameras are gone.
