I desperately wanted one as a kid. I grew up watching Abbott and Costello performing comedy with their whacky simian companion Bingo the Chimp (turns out that Costello was terrified of the chimp; when it bit him during one particular episode, he angrily had it expelled from the set and never had it on the show again). As a child, I used to vacation with my family at my aunt and uncle's house in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and at one of the houses along the beachfront a monkey was kept in an outdoor cage, and I always thought how great it would be to have it as a pet. At this point in time, as a crotchety middle-aged adult, that childhood desire is long, long gone. I had enough trouble with dogs and cats. From what I understand, monkeys can be dirty, nasty-tempered animals. I never met my late birth-father, but I've talked with his sister and cousin numerous times since re-connecting with my biological family. I've learned that in addition to pigeons (which can attract rats), my birth-father had a monkey. At one point, it got out of its cage and somehow or other got behind the walls in the house where my birth-father was staying at the time. He and my cousin attempted to coax it out to no avail; they weren't even sure what portion of the wall the monkey was behind. Occasionally, they'd hear it making noises and would once again begin their fruitless endeavors to coax it out. When they thought they had pinpointed its location, they'd hear it chattering behind another section of wall in another portion of the house. Finally, in desperation, they began punching holes in the portions of the wall where they thought the monkey might have taken up residence. My cousin said he peered into one of the holes and saw these gleaming monkey eyes peering back out at him. I'm pretty sure that was the last monkey my birth-father ever kept as a pet.

monkeys don't make good pets at all they are meant to be in they wild and they are very destructive, also loud and usually they need another monkey to be around. but they are very smart.
twansalem 06/24/2008
There is definitely a novelty factor in having a pet monkey, but it doesn't really seem like a good idea. They're too human like.
TorontoChaser 06/24/2008
leave them in the jungle please !!

I have birds that throw food. Why would I want an animal in the house that threw food ejected from it's backside?
trebon1038 06/23/2008
The people I know who have had monkeys as pets will tell you that these animals are destructive and too difficult to tame
Mr.Tuner 02/29/2008
I have always wanted a pet monkey! i think that it would be so cool.
Jamie McBain 09/18/2007
Sure they look cute, but they can bite and very active, plus most cities and states don't allow them for pets.
Monkeys belong in either a zoo, or in the wild, where they belong.
Randyman 01/12/2007
I always keep one with me. Oh, wait, this is another list, never mind!
93century 01/12/2007
That would be cool to have a pet orangutan that would flip people the bird, and beat the crap out of people like Clyde did in the Clint Eastwood movies. Like Senovia Boggs says "twelve ribs my ass!"
LastMessenger3 08/08/2006
If you don't mind for your house to look like a jungle, then you have my blessing.
Ih8rateitall 03/10/2006
Not the cute creatures everyone thinks they are. Did anyone see what that monkey named bobo and his pal did to that older gentleman? Long story short, they kicked his ass! I saw him on a talk show, he no longer has a nose, and some of his fingers are gone, gone dudes! The scary thing was that this was only two little chimps. Imagine what would of happened if those were gorillas!
AlaskanBred 08/13/2005
monkeys arent pets, you idiots who have them. they are WILD animals and don't need to live as pets... if you get attacked it is your fault. keep wild animals where they belong. get a dog.

Well, SamIam left the expirience that sam had. Opinions are mostly the expirience one had. For example, my opinion on Melissa (a made up person used for example) is that she's mean and horrible. Why? because of the events that she and i have been in and the way she treated ME. but to her friends and families opinion.. she can be the sweetest thing. now, the point i'm getting at is, there is always two ways to look at things, the bad or the good. If i make a list of bad thingson you, (that are facts) and post it online. The person reading will grimace and say.. what an aweful child. i wish not to see him/her same goes vice versa, if i only put good thingsa about you.. the person will concider you a saint. However, if i put both the facts... the person will know you are a good person... but of course, like everyone else, have your ups and downs. Wise advice is, if you are willing to take FULL responsibility for a monkey... very well. Be serious!! but since many dont have the patience and tolerence or had badexpiriences or focus on the bad things... then they aparently cannot percieve themselves to manage such a thing. Think about what CHAOTICIAN said. I believe this person has a good point. Aslong as you CAN HANDLE IT. AND many people have. Apparently since some learn sign language. and help out. the point here aswell : It all depends on you. your tolerence. the point of view... the patience etc.. because no matter what... humans will always domesticate animals and make what seems impossible come true. (like taking a Wild ANIMAL and taming it like a cat or dog. So how about it...? do you think you are one of those people whohave enough patience to perform such miracles?
CherrySoda99 01/14/2004
Please, monkey's may be cute, but it makes me think of Michael Jackson's pet monkey, Bubbles...scary.
Eagle Scout 11/18/2003
Monkeys are wild animals meant to live in the wild, and maybe a zoo if it is humane. To keep them as pets is far too cruel, even if you love them like a child.
puppy_eyez 10/08/2003
if you have the time and money to take care of one oooh and pashants they will be a good pet
hill 08/24/2003
monkeys should be left alone in the wild"""they should not be taken apart from their family.they are very intellegent animals.''''and one more thing:THEY ARE SO CUTE''''

resisobilus 06/07/2003
Too close a relative and too undomesticated. One of the worst ideas for a "pet".
KoRnChild70 06/01/2003
"Go monkey! throw your shi* at intruders! chase down the theif! now...when we walk down this aisle, pop out of my pack and grab some things..." If i had a monkey that's what I'd say to it. mine would steal for me and protect my house by throwing its own dung at my enemies. if i got in a fight at school, he'd jump out of my backpack and cup a bunch of shi* in his hand and fling it in my enemy's eyes. then id laugh and laugh. everyone would laugh, even my opponent would. we would have great times...i'd call him Fojar. fojar and me...what a great time...

I am a Monkey - a 17-year old male Chimpanzee to be exact. I think it's quite ironic that you humans think you consider us pets. What you don't realize is that most of us think YOU make good pets. I help my human companion more than he helps me (which isn't much). In return, I get to eat great food, terrorize the neighbors, and use the computer all I want! I am giving myself five stars - and you all should think about who's the boss around here.
BugahaNE 05/10/2003
Yes they are cute to see in a zoo, or on a nature show on television. As far as having them as a pet, I would always have this fear that it would just lunge for my eyes and rip them out.
kanga144 05/08/2003
Monkeys take work but can be rewarding if youare good to them.Because anybody who would take a monkey and lock it in a cage ought to be terribly ashamed. having a monkey can mean "monkey proofing" your house but monkeys are noble-and nice--and good animals for people who can take a challenge and be good to them.
Palmer Eldrich 04/21/2003
A male squirrel monkey greets another male by showing him his penis. The dominant male will then urinate in the submissive monkey's face. Cute, huh? They also wash their hands and feet several times a day with their own urine so they can scent mark their territory. A squirrel monkey will urinate on and into everything in your home, so that he can smell his own scent everywhere. Have you ever had a monkey urinate into your television set and short the whole thing out? In the wild, spider monkeys urinate on predators from their perches in the trees. They also defecate into their hands and then throw it. "Pet" spider monkeys will do the same thing. Bored monkeys will play with their excrement and use it to paint the walls of your home. When they become about two years old, they will tear off their diapers as fast as you can put them on. If the monkey can reach its own excrement it will also eat it. Have you ever had friends over, and had your monkey come into the livingroom, defecate on the floor and then eat it? That's a real conversation killer. A monkey's life is spent fighting and struggling to be the alpha monkey in its group. Your cute little baby monkey will begin to do this at about age two. It will attack your children first, from the youngest to the eldest, and then whichever oneof the parents it did not bond with. Visiting friends and relatives will also be viciously attacked, as the monkey will view them as intruders in its territory. Monkeys go for the throat, eyes, and hands. They are very fast Ninety percent ofmacaques carry the herpes B virus which is fatal to humans. Monkeys are filthy, vile, dangerous animals. If you think grooming keeps them clean, remember that fleas are the carriers of tapeworms, so they are constantly re-infecting themselves as they munch on their fleas. Yuck.

Fun to watch but I don't think that they should be domesticated.

I think my house would last about 5 minutes with one of these things in it. Imagine trying to control one? They would be all over the house in seconds, destroying and knocking over stuff. They would needed to be watched literally all of the time. I'd rather have a hermit crab...
ChunkyLover53 02/11/2003
I agree with CastleBee that monkeys can be great pets for disabled people if trained properly, but I can't imagine keeping one as a pet. I have two little "monkeys" that visit my house a lot. They're my little niece and nephew ;-)
enchanceaa 02/10/2003
Yes they are cute. But they should not be pets. Plus most people who get them anyway cant care for them the correct way and just get rid of them.
