I think Lowe's is a handy store to have in your neighborhood. If something needs fixed or replaced, the store is right there at your fingertips. They have a wide variety of supplies and appliances.

Ordered vinyl flooring on 1/3 and was told taht it could take 10 to 14 days. I said I needed it in 12 days and they said that since it was coming from only one hour away it would likely only take a week. They said they would check on it and call me back if there would be a problem. They didn't call so I called one week later. I talked to three different people in the flooring dept. They each gave me a different story and promised to call me right back. None of them did. I called back again and was told the product was being shipped by FedEx on 1/11 ground from a town one hour away. That it could be there the next day (Friday 1/12), certainly the next delivery day after that (1/15). I called 1/15 only to be told the product hadn't arrived, they would check and call me right back. Three hours later I called them back. Another guy said he would check. He called back and said the product hadn't shipped yet! He said it would be there on 1/18. Because of this fiasco the floor can't be here in time for my construction schedule and now I am screwed. No one could give me a straight answer. Out of seven calls that promised they would get back to me right away, only the last one ever did. I finally gave up, cancelled the order and asked for a credit on my charge card. I will make sure I warn anyone I know not to deal with Lowe's. A disaster.

I will never... I repeat NEVER buy another thing at Lowe's. We purchased a new door for $1000. The payment's were like $35/mo. We wanted to pay it up so we made double and triple payments. My husband underwent emergency surgery and we were late with a payment and WHAM! They called us on a Sat. at 8 a.m. to inform us we were late and would have to pay a $30. late charge. So, OK we paid it. Now two weeks later they call us at 8:00 on a Sunday and complain that they didn't get the money. My husband was livid. He read off the check number and amount and the woman said... "Oh... I guess we did get it." He asked if this were Lowe's... she said it was a collection agency. Can you imagine that? Late for one payment and they zapped us to a collection agency. We owe $35. and I'm paying it off tomorrow and will tear up my card and never do business with them again!

I strongly suggest that anyone needing lumber or hardware in the roseburg oregon area "steer clear" of "lowes" the customer service I found there was far below even hillbilly standards, It took me over an hour before anyone would help me with cutting a simple piece of masonite, employees wandered about like zombies. I finally threw up my hands and walked out, the trip to lowes was 16 miles one way, it took me over an hour to go there and come back home, I make $64.00 and hour, so I figure I lost about $100.00 in wasted time alone. so I'll never go back there again.

Lowe's stores are brighter and more inviting than Home Depot, but it's still a big box home improvement store. Employees are a bit friendlier than at Home Depot, but not much. Not enough cashiers on weekends. The only thing Home Depot has over Lowe's is a better looking paint scheme on the sponsored NASCAR cars.

I am involved in new construction and have had several bad incidents with Lowe's, but 2 that were major. I ordered a window and when I went to pick it up, we were sent all over the store and back and forth between departments with the final guy saying it would take a long time before he could get to me. I then chased down a manager who scolded these rude individuals and helped us but we agreed never to go to the Suffolk store again. A few weeks later we went to order a jacuzzi at the Portsmouth Blvd store and I stood at the desk for 10 minutes before pressing the "help" button. The announcement went off for a long time until someone disenabled the paging system so that they wouldn't have to listen to it anymore. I then stood there for another 20 minutes while filling out a "how did we do?" card and a male employee with a long red braid walked by with another customer who had been waiting behind me and had gone off in search of an employee. The customer told him we were there first, but he helped the customer with a question and then walked right by us and left the department. We finally left this horrible store and went to Home Depot. Everyone is so friendly there and they actually ask if you need help instead of running when they see you. We bought a jacuzzi through Home Depot and have vowed never to set foot in ANY Lowe's store again.

There workers seem to care and when I complained about 1/3 of all the 2X4s being bent. The store manager sent two guys to personally go through the stack and verify they where good. I like them just as much as my local suppliers although I still wish you could order bundles of better grades of 2X4s. That way I could have it delivered to my job sites without having to lose time sending a defective bundle back. My inspection for bundles is if the third row down has any more than 2 bad pieces of lumber in it I will send it all back thus losing time and money. Nothing gets under my skin more than lumber that’s to wet(Greater than 8%) and has nots bigger than half the width of the board through both sides of the board. So much better than home depot although not as good as some local stores or direct suppliers.
POOR SERVICE 12/19/2005
Rock bottom of the barrel when it comes to service--it's been three months, I'm still without a kitchen--they CANT get the order right! I'm about to pull my hair out! don't go to lowes for kitchen remake--designer doesn't know left from right or up from down--manager failed us and didn't reorder or correct THEIR error--it's nuts. Over a dozen major errors and we're still without a kitchen!

If you didn't know, the rules are... if you love Lowe's you hate Home Depot. If you hate Lowe's you love Home Depot. I don't know for sure who made those rules but you probably better follow them just incase because I don't think you can get into heaven unless you do. It's one of those Ford / Chevrolet things. As far as helpful, friendly and organized, I think it has more to do with how old the store is instead of if it is Lowe's or Home Depot. The newer ones are always more organized and the staff less knowledgeable. The older the store the less likely they are to track you down to ask if you need help. As a general rule: I think Lowe's had placed special emphasis on the employees helping customers. This seems clearly the case, however, it breaks down when it comes to the number of checkers needed. They always seem to be a little stingy on the number of checkout stands they open. When things are really dead and there is only one checker open they may wait until there is a line of 10 people before opening up a new line. Home Depot has a better electrical department than Lowe's. Lowe's has a better selection of metal for those of us that like to do some minor welding and building of metal projects. Home Depot has a better selection of street number signs. I know, I know... but they do and you just wait until you need an address for your house and your tune will sure change! I like Home Depot power tools better but Lowe's sometimes has some great deals in that department. I like Lowe's outdoor items better and think they always have a larger selection. Wood? Now that's a hard one. It seems that over the years the trees don't grow as straight as they use to. Lumber ain't what it use to be. I think Lowe's has the best prices and Home Depot has the best lumber.... but that can change from week to week. I believe that Lowe's tends to keep bowed, cupped, split, lumber on the shelf longer in hopes someone will want bad lumber. I like Lowe's automatic sprinkler selection and has Home Depot beat to shreds if you want to buy any hose by the foot. Ditto, Rope and twine. They are so very close that it is hard to determine the best and I suspect this varies from community to community. If you have an older house and are doing "repairs" (instead of refurbishments-remodeling) your best bet is to go to the local mom & pop (even Ace/TrueValue Hardware) "first." Many times they will have a much less expensive "solution" although as a general rule they are higher for most things.

Overall, a pleasant experience. They seem to have 98% of what I need and the stores are light and airy. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. There's always a "good morning!" as you walk by. Had a very bad experience with a special order. The manufacturer's fault, not Lowes. But they worked hard and kept at it until I was 100% satisfied.

Didn't impress me! Home Depot treated me better!

I been treated very well as a shopper in Lowe's, but their credit card service stinks. They recently came out with a online payment service that failed for some reason. Fixing the payment problem is taking hours of auto menus, operators putting you on hold, head office personal not knowing where to direct your call. Someone has failed to instituted problem manage system in there credit dept that will lose them customers.

On 9/9/05, I attempted to use my Lowe's credit card. The card was denied, at first, without explaination. Upon demanding an explaination, the cashier, phones someone and gave the reciever to me. A man said I missed a $23 payment. Upon checking, a monthly payment (usually I do not carry a balance) was 9 days late. This is the ONLY payment that had ever been late. And I had mailed it on 9/7. We own and manage rental property and I have had Lowe's credit card since 2001. I was out of town for 3 weeks. This month it happened to be the three weeks that Lowe's give you to pay after recieving a statement. Our credit rati ng is over 800. I fail to see how insulting me and causing all this over being a few days late would benifit anyone. In fact, I will never go Lowe's again.

Lowes is the near best home improvement shopping experience I have ever had. The manager at the lowes in Ventura has been very helpful and the staff iw well informed and professional/courteous unlike the home depot suckers.

These guy's are going to bury Home Depot!!!!!

Home depot has self service checkout, while lowes doesn't. Long lines at lowes. Went in once to pick up a special order doorknob that I had been notified had arrived and waited 30 minutes (really) as the stockroom people were paged over and over again.

I enjoy shopping at Lowe's more than Home Depot. These chains are awfully similar, but Lowe's has been the more pleasant shopping experience for me. Both chains have more pricing power and selection than your local hardware store, but the tradeoff is dealing with an employee whose working knowledge may be underdeveloped. Mom & Pop stores nearly always have a tried and true expert handy.
