Truly dreadful. One of the worst actors ever to make it to "star" status. Played the same part time and time again, and each time it wasn't convincing. Stiff, turgid and mannered performances. A real tough guy who wussed it out during WWII, but was ultra gung-ho during the Viet Nam fiasco when other peoples' sons were getting their asses blown off. Tells you quite a bit about the so-called "man." A phony hypocrite from day one, and so bad on the screen that I'm embarassed for him.

John Wayne was - by far - one of the greatest actors. Especially in westerns. I know that he did many westerns but my all time John Wayne movie was not a western. It was called "The Quiet Man" and he starred with Maureen O'Hara. She was in alot of his movies, and together, they were remarkable. I still love to watch his movies. The best classics--indeed!!!!!!

Well saddle up there partner. You-know-I-try- to purr tend to be this straight shooter in the films but you know what junior? This here Cowboy went AWOL in WWII when his country needed him. Guess its a little different tryin to be a tough guy when the bullets are real ain't it? yessir now lets giddyup on outta here before they ask me what my real name is.

Reached his level of incompetence as a director in The Alamo. Could have been a really great movie. The production values and cast were excellent but it was not put together very well. It also could have been more forthright. The reason that the Americans in Texas wanted the Mexicans out of there was because slavery was illegal in Mexico while the American planters wanted slaves for the plantations they were planning in Texas. Of course, that would have destroyed all the heroism.

John Wayne will always be remembered. He was a legend and legends don't die. Wayne's movies contained variety and appeal. He always got the girl and always got the bad guy. John Wayne also did all of his own stunts which I think is great. Wayne has something to offer everyone from war movies to comedies. True Grit will always be a classic and the searchers. My favorite ones are Rio Bravo with Dean Martin, McClintock, and The Quiet man. All comical films but have have deep meaning to them as well which alot of todays movies are lacking. John Wayne died before I was born but I grew up on his movies and I prefer them to anything on television. He shared eveything he had with the world even though his mother never seemed to love him or support him he still went after what he wanted. Nothing stood in the way of The Duke!

THE man's man of all time, but just catch one of the comedies, like The Quiet Man, or Stagecoach.

Anyone who doesnt think Wayne a great actor, I would suggest they watch the films The Searchers and The Horse Soldiers, as well as True Grit.

I would give him four points just for being the legend he was.For an awful lot of years he was a hero to many. The cowboy that some looked up to. A true patriot. i have not seen a lot of his movies but as an actor he was pretty good. Not great. He pretty much played the type of role.He was my dad's favorite actor.hands down.

I met Mr. Wayne while scuba diving (me...not him). He was in poor health and didn't look great...BUT, he was congenial, kind and accomodating. Even though he was on the verge of death, he took time to be good to his fans. He was a big MAN. No, he wasn't a great actor. Yes, he did inspire America and Americans. When people ask me, "Why did you join the Marine Corps?". I always say the same thing, "I wanted to serve, so I picked the best branch....and I wanted to be like John Wayne -- American!"

Not that great.....I have seen some of the Duke's movies and I prefer Clint Eastwood.

John Wayne made movies that were a lot different than the movies today. In his movies you always knew the good guys and the bad guys. In his movies you always knew the bad guys were done for. In his movies you knew might made right, and The Duke would always come out on top. I wish they made that kind of movies today, but in the real world it doesn't always end the way we want it. I can still remember John Wayne advertising for Camel cigarettes. Years later, after his lung cancer surgery, I can remember his commercials for the Cancer Society, when he said the line "I've licked the big C". Then, later, the cancer came back and claimed him as a victim. Then I knew that no matter how big and strong you are, the good guys don't always come out on top.

Tough, uncompromising, conservative, a gentleman, and a patriot. A genuinely inspiring character. I wish we had more like him!

Whem an actor becomes larger than life, we begin to forget that he is being picked to bring his persona to a part, not to adapt himself to the part. John Wayne could act and received recognition for his accomplishments, but it is JOHN WAYNE, American Hero, we remember. Either as a marine, a cowboy, a white hunter, or a boxer, he brought the part to life. And, we bought tickets to see him. That's what actors do.

Unlike actors like Tom Hanks or Dustin Hoffman, on screen, John Wayne would never even try to convince you he was really anybody else. Even though he starred in countless movies during his long career, he was actually successful at creating only one character - John Wayne, American Hero. His great success may have been due to many factors. But, whether it was the classic need for a hero/father figure, the turbulent times before and after the Second World War, or his position as one of the few conservative icons of the Viet Nam era, one thing you cannot deny - on a wide scale, he was better at playing this hero character than nearly anyone else.

In the troubled sixties when every actor seemed to writhe with angst over drugs and sex, John Wayne knew what he was about and he filled the theaters.

I understand that this man was a Hollywood legend, but to me it seemed like his acting was somewhat phony. He talked in that same monotone voice in every movie he was in and he just looked very stiff in his movements. He also never played a villan, it would have been nice to see the "Duke play a bad guy, other than a rugged hero all the time. It was almost as if he became a caricature of himself.
