Eukanuba 5

Ok, I have fed my 6 year old Pomeranian Eukanuba most of his life. Of course I do not love the connection with proctor and gamble and am not a fan of Iams but the results speak for themselves. My pom has never had any serious health issues, in fact the only time he goes to the vet is for his yearly shots. On the other hand, I have had 2 other dogs, on died at age 3 and he was on a different vet prescribed food due to allergy issues, makes me wonder how he would have been if he would have been on Eukanuba, maybe live longer. My other dog I got as a 8 week old pup he is now 1 year and doing fairly well. With my 1 year dog I have not fed him Eukanuba because I jumped on the natural and holistic bandwagon and fell into the false claims by the holistic companies. I am now switching my 1 year old dog to Eukanuba because he never did too good on any of the natural foods, I tried Orijen, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, and so on and none of them seemed to work right for him.

Eukanuba of course has its drawbacks but it is a proven food which you know has worked for a long time. Many, many dogs have been on this food and lived healthy long lives. On the other hand while some of the natural companies have been around for a while it is still a guess to say the different so called human grade food is a great deal better. I also read a review that said a very smart thing, I am not feeding a human I am feeding a dog so what would it matter with human grade food as long as the ingredients are fair quality and proven. Also, ALOT of people say that natural food or holistic food is so much better because it mimics the wild. WELL, guess what....natural wolves and canines do NOT live as long as those in captivity!!!!! Anyone considered this! The reasons for wild canines living shorter lives is of course a combination of factors but among the top are environmental dangers and lack of proper nutrition! So when I see a dog food that says it mimics the food of a wild dog I think to myself, "Is that really what I want, to mimic the short lifespan of what a wild dog eats for my domestic dog?" In the end I wish I could make a food from scratch from my own ingredients but I cannot afford it. Eunakuba is a well known company with a long track record of success and a continuing attempt to create more advanced nutrition. Yes, I would love to give my dog the best but I just do not trust the validity of those natural or holistic foods yet. I want to feed my dog something I KNOW other dogs have eaten and lived long healthy lives on.

I read many reviews which either base the low rating on ridiculous statements or a health concern. First, if a dog suddenly gets cancer, loose stool, vomiting, or another sudden health issue it is very likely not the food it is eating (of course assuming the food is not contaminated). Many reviewers say I fed ----dog food for several years and one day my dog died, who says this is the food? I think it is an odd stretch to assume the food killed the dog. Anyone ever heard of environmental risks, genetic health issues (which often develop in later life), or even an owner who does not give thier dog proper vet care? For those reviewers who say the food killed their dog, I say show me proof and not assumptions then I might listen. For the reviewers who just say nonsense such as my dog would not eat it so its bad or they dont like the ingredients, or they just dont like the company so the food is bad I say next time you review a product try and be helpful rather than just writing a bunch of your personal opinion. Just because a dog does not like the food does not make it bad, it makes your dog picky (which is fine so find a food it will eat). Just because you do not like the company does not make the food bad (personal preference does not equal facts in terms of nutrition). Lastly, those who do not give your dogs the proper vet care and blame the illness on the food (which is likely a small number of you, most had been great owners but for whatever reason had a genetically sick dog) you should not waste peoples time. If you do not give your dog the proper care it needs NO food will keep them healthy. Many owners give no thought to what it really takes to care for a dog the RIGHT way and not the easy or cheap way, it requires diligence and time and money. If you cannot give all these essential items and vet care to an animal you should not have one, so dont blame food for your poor ethics.

Bottom line, Eukanuba is a good food. Maybe not the best but if it works for your dog and keeps them healthy there is nothing wrong with it and it has been PROVEN, which speaks volumes to me. Those reading these reviews to help choose a dog food, please dont let the negative nonsense make you feel like a bad owner if you feed Eukanuba or another so called grocery brand. Again the foods have been around for years and many many dogs have thrived on them without any issues. It all depends on the dog and the particular food. Each dog will not be good on every food and every food is not always good for every dog but the ultimate solution is not necessarily holistic and natural food. Eukanuba sponsors a dog show, has a long history of success, has a natural series which give the owner a proven natural option, and has kept my pom healthy for 6 years. Until someone gives me solid proof of its negative ingredients rather than their opinions or bias facts I will continue to feed my dogs Eukanuba and stop becoming prey to this new holistic and natural kick.

My vet and many pet owners have recommended Eukanuba to me. My chocolate lab gets more compliments on her coat than I can believe. I fed her Purina Puppy Chow for a few days until I could get to the pet store for more Eukanuba and she had diareah and NO energy for those days. For those of you who choose Science Diet because they offer prescription formula, have no fear because my vet informed me that Iams prescription can be used for dogs who eat Eukanuba. I strongly recommend this food.

When I got my start in veterinary medicine 20+ years ago, there were two worthwhile food companies in the country: Eukanuba/Iams and Hills Science Diet. That was 20 years ago. Iams/Eukanuba is now a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble, and the quality of their food is average, at best, with many of their formulas being significantly below average. Ingredient quality has dropped, and the focus is no longer on pet health but on marketing and profits.

Bottom line is that it is way over priced. The food could be better, averaging about $1.20lb., there should be NO corn in the food. There is. AND some wheat, sorghum, and other "stuff"...IF the food was as good as the advertising, they might have something going....

I am giving this food a three only because it helped my toy poodle put on much needed weight in a small time after her illness. Also because it is better than some other junk out there.I used the Eukanuba Maintenance adult small bite.

She was doing good with this until she got about half way through the bag and I noticed she seemed to be constipated often. I left her on the food and just gave her some mineral oil but then she started to develop what I believe are skin allergies. She was constantly scratching and chewing her paws. When I would brush her (she is black) you could see the "dandruf" flaking off of her skin. Her belly was so red and reminded me of cradel cap on a newborn. You could just see her skin peeling.

The ingredients read as follows- chicken chicken -by product meal, corn meal, ground whole grain sorghum, so I am thinking she is allergic to the corn or sorghum stuff.

This was pretty expensive for me about $23.00 for 8lb bag so I expected more from the food but now I am reading more into the label and think there are cheaper foods with better ingredients than this one. I just picked up Natural Balance after reading reviews for only 7.20 for a 5 lb bag. at my local pet store. I'm going to give that a shot.

This is for Naturally Wild Eukanuba.

I fed my dog the salmon with no problems. He liked the flavor. Just 1 of the small bags (12lbs i think).

The venison gave him gas and diarrhea.

For less money you can get Blue, which has more meat and veggies. Naturally Wild has too much grain (and cheap brewers rice as it is) to be so expensive. Who cares if the salmon actually came from the atlantic or farm raised. I eat farm raised salmon.

Anyway, I'm trying ProPlan sensitive stomach for now. I also feed my dog store brand frozen veggies since there are none in ProPlan. That way he gets nutrition at a lower price, and with less carpet cleaning (solid stooles with ProPlan).

My dog does best on Iams, but I went up to Eukanuba, which was substantially more.  I can get Iams for 13 dollars where Eukanuba was near 25 for a 20lb bag.  I couldn't justify paying more when Iams works so well for him and there didn't seem to be a difference in health or viger with Eukanuba.  Sooooo little difference in the ingredients though I'm sure Eukanuba has more protien.

I'm back on Eukanuba.  And upping the rating to make up for all the people who shouldn't be reviewing but do.

Overpriced for basically being comprised of the same crap as most of the cheaper brands. Great marketing doesn't make a good dog food.

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog pup, just over 4 months old.  I researched quite a bit to find a good food that would meet her needs.  I finally settled on Blue Lg breed puppy.  While she enjoyed the food she had very loose, very foul stool and gas.  Finally after a bout of diarreah, (and a serious accident on the carpet) it was time for a change.  I switched her to lg breed puppy Eukanuba, and it has been great.  She has tons of energy, looks great, and has solid stools. I called the company and asked about the corn in the food.  Their philosophy is that corn is a solid carb and so long as it is finely ground it is easily digestible.  Thus far I have to agree.  While there may be better human grade quality foods out there, I am not feeding a human.  So far so good and am very pleased.

I have raised, trained and shown dogs for several years and have seven dogs at this time. I can't recommend this food. Many dogs do not find it palatable. We call it "Pukeanuba" here. Research what you are feeding. After switching to high quality truly meat-based food, our dogs are appreciably happier, healthier with excellent coat and even improved color. While dogs are omnivores and can survive on a grain based diet, I have found a great deal of difference in ours being on a meat based food. The good news, though pricey, a great food isn't that much more than high priced, low quality foods like Eukanuba. I know some dog people who love feeding Eukanuba and claim it is great. While not able to prove cause and effect, these same people have dogs with IBD, kidney failure at a young age and kidney cancer in one dog's prime. Not to mention, many episodes of bloat. Again, if you truly research the quality of ingredients, you won't need to read other people's input because it is really very obvious. I only gave it one star because you can't give a minus star on the site.

I tried the Sensitive Skin formula of Eukanuba for my Greyhound as trial for rotation of foods.  After a week on the food his hair started coming out in clumps... and he got this red hue to his skin (Greyhounds only have one coat and their skin is VERY visable).  I was horrified! He barely sheds for the most part, and here I am thinking this might be something good for him. It was after this experience that I seriously began to research dog foods.  I guess I fell for the hype on The Animal Network... sponsoring all those dog shows etc.  Will never use this product again, nor recommend it

I have fed my English Setters Eukanuba Maintenence, Senior and Performance (during hunting season) for 7 years. My dogs are healthy, with great coats, no allergies and firm stools. They go for good runs 3-4 times per week and have great energy. Rarely do they have an accident in the house.
I have read all the reiviews on this web page and my guess is many reviews were made by people who never fed their dog this product. My guess is many of them sell "natural" dog foods and want you to buy their product. I admidt I do not know much about Iams but am aware they have had some issues. Some reviews were probably wrote by people with one agenda or more.
I trust my vet and he has been an excellent vet for my dogs for 15 years. He assures me Eukanuba is a very good dog food. I would ask your vet before you listen to all the negitives on this site.
I always want the best for my dogs and I admit some of the products in Eukanuba do concern me. I am researching these new "natural" foods because, if I can find something much better in my budget, I would try it.
On the other hand, my neighbor sells expensive "natural" dog foods out of their house and all I can tell you is this; in my opinion their two German Shepards died at too young of age regardless of the "great" food they were fed.
I know cron is not a great product for humans or dogs, but if it were as bad as some of these rewiews state, I am sure the FDA would remove put caution to it in our diet. Eukanuba states they use "quality by products" and based on my experience, I think they must.

It pains me to even admit that I ever fed my beloved Bacchus a Eukanuba formula. But I trusted his vets and their recommendations. Sadly, I have since come to the conclusion that most vets are just as ignorant, deliberately or incidentally, about dog nutrition as I was. I will not go into the many, many reasons to avoid Eukanuba; Puppyloverkb (see her review) has done a decent job reviewing some of the issues regarding the list of ingredients on the packages. For more detailed information on why this food is basically "junk in a pretty package" check out the following websites: dogfoodanalysis.com, dogfoodproject.com and dogaware.com for starters.

I would, however, like to relay some of my personal experiences with Eukanuba. My dog (Bacchus) was raised on this junk for 6.5 years of his life (he is currently 7 years old). All seemed fine at first, but over a period of time gradual changes started to take place: his scratching increased, his eyes were constantly red, hot spots and sores were developing in his underbelly and his coat was slowly losing some of its sheen. Of course we visited vets, both as part of his annual check-ups as well as for particular issues. At one time he was diagnosed with an inability to produce enough tears to lubricate his eyes as an explanation of why the corneas were at best pink and at worst blood-red. Then, about a year ago, the pet food recall hit the news. A few months later he tore his knee ligaments and required surgery and was also told that he needed to go on a diet to lose some of the excess weight he had gained. Since the food recall I had started researching dog-food, and the more I read about it the angrier I became. Angry at myself for having exposed an animal, my Bacchus, to so much crap and for so long! Since I tend not to believe all I read on the internet I also hired "dog" nutritionists to help me come up with a sensible diet and hopefully undo some of the damage. So here we are 7 months after the surgery and after Eukanuba became but a sad memory. We have been on 3-4 different formulas as part of a rotation diet: Solid Gold's "Barking at the Moon,"  Timberwolf's lamb formula, Canidae in combination with Solid Gold for a  short period,  and currently Orijen's fish formula. I am elated to report that within just 2 weeks from removing Eukanuba from his diet (7 months ago), all of the physical ailments I mentioned above had vanished! He has fully recoverd from the surgery, his coat has reacquired that lustre it had lost, his eyes couldn't be any whiter, the sores and scratching are gone, and his energy, even on a diet, is that of a 2 year old dog! In closing, I only have one piece of advice to offer: take advantage of the information out there and stop buying dog food brands simply because they are readily available in your local petsmarts or petcos; stop using the taste-test as an indication of whether a dog food brand is good or bad. Your dog would rather have twinky bars, sugar cubes or just plain chocolate for dinner; none of these is good for him and would be considered cruelty to even offer them as treats. If you think your dog is doing well on Eukanuba, imagine how much better he/she may do on some of the truly premium foods in the market and under your finger tips. I am also sorry I cannot give Eukanuba a rating of 0 stars or less!

I don't like buying a P&G product, but if it makes my dog happy & healthy, I'll do it!

I've fed my dog the Adult +1 Maitenance exclusively for 4 years after other brands upset her stomach. She has never had runny stools or other digestive issues related to this food. Usually the other "delightful" things she finds at dog parks, or in the yard ;-) Her energy, skin and teeth are all in excellent condition and her coat is extreemely soft and shiny.

We got another dog from the shelter and it's coat at first was coarse and dull. We started him on Eukanuba as well and now while not silky (just not that kind of fur) it is very shiny and healthy, and he has plenty of energy beig a lab/chow mix. I am looking to switch only because of my research finding it is connected to IAMS even though I am not yet convinced that this is necessary, my piece of mind is worth it. I am experimenting with other organic vaieties adding the new variety gradually. One in particular she ate alright but two nights in a row she was sick after eating it. So needless to say that one is out. Hopefully she will be able to keep down one of the others if not I will definitely come back to this brand.

Dogs are indivduals having different genetic make-ups and so different needs what works for one obviously doesn't work for others as many of these reviews have shown.

My small dog T-Bone eats Eukanuba Adult Maintenance, and let me tell you, he is HEALTHY and Strong as an ox. 5 years old and feistier than ever. My uncle is a Veteranarian and he reccomends this dog food to many of his clients including my dog. Mind you, he has been practicing for about 30 years now, so I can assure you that he knows his stuff. My dog likes the taste also. The only drawback is, due to the fish meal in it, his breath is fishy.

I have been feeding my two dogs eukanuba since they were both puppies. I switched my doberman to reduced fat after awhile. I have kept my chihuahua on lasmb and rice and she has been fine. The only problems I ever had was when I switched my chihuahua to the new eukanuba puppy. She started losing hair, throwing up and getting diarrhea. I switched right back to her regular lamb and rice and she went back to normal. So far they have been a great dog food, I don't know if it has to do with the lamb and rice or what but my dogs like it so I guess I do too.

This was a terrible food for a total of 7 dogs. Previously, I had written a review for Innova. In it I said that I had fed it to a nursing Pembroke Welsh Corgi who got fat on it. Well we went from that on to Eukanuba Performance (or whatever they call that kind). I was feeding it to 2 adult dogs and 5 puppies. All 7 dogs had loose, runny and very smelly stools. And they pooped a LOT. So, that was the first and only time where I had specifically not recommended a brand of dog food. And that was to the new owners of the puppies. Otherwise I only tell people what I like/dislike about certain brands and it's usually only something I have personally experiences with. Other times it's a certain ingredient but that's before I find out that I'm either wrong or right about said ingredient :)

Eukanuba isn't the most palatable dog food in the market. My Labrador that normally eats anything actually stopped eating this brand! At first his coat and health appeared to improve but it was also accompanied by bad gas problems that he'd never had before as well as large and smelly stool. I have since switched to a holistic dog food (surprisingly cheaper) and since then he hasn't had gas problems (thankfully!), his stool size and odour has reduced considerably and as a plus side he doesn't have any more ear infections or skin irritations. This food definitely isn't worth it's price.

I love this dog food! It's rich and meaty. My dog is 7 years old, and I've fed her Eukanuba exclusively. She is in perfect health, with no allergies, and in perfect weight. As a professional groomer, I often recommend Eukanuba Reduced Fat for heavy dogs. This is the only reduced fat food that has the correct balance of good fats to keep the skin and coat in great shape, while the dog loses the extra weight. Eukanuba is a highly concentrated source of meat protein, not fillers. Eukanuba is the BEST!

Good all around food with all the new and beneficial nutrients. Just wary of the lower quality "by-products" and "corn meal" Some dogs are allergic to corn, and is not easily digested. Think of a dog in the wild eating it's natural diet, would corn be a part of it? It doesn't hurt, but sure leaves a messy backyard.
