Still the king after all these years. The shotgun by which all others are judged.

very nice gun to shoot with,i own a 870 express and do a lot of clay shootig, had a few jams the empty shell stays at the port but is not a big deal reaching and removing it by hand. Don't know if i would have the same opinion if my life depended on "It".

The 870 Wingmaster is an awesome gun, BUT The 870 Express used to be one of the BEST guns you could buy for the money. I got one of the 870 Express Magnums when they first cam out. BUT, now I can not justify paying for inferior workmanship. I do not know what has happened, but recent 870 is not the 870 of years gone by. I have had several friends purchase the 870 Express after shooting mine and most of them have had problems with cycling, ejecting, etc. They are able to eventually work out the kinks, but one shouldn't have to work out kinks. I recently traded a Browning BPS 3.5"(Junk) for a Benelli Nova and I think the Nova is better than the 870 Express Magnum of today.

This a a meat gun for sure. If you want a pump that will last forever this is it. There are other types of shotguns that are more fun to shoot but if you want a pump this is the way to go.

870 super mag has been a great gun for the money! I would certainly buy another one!!!!

I suppose there are "better" guns out there, but the first gun I ever fell in love with was the 870. I own 2 Brownings, a Citori and a Belgian Superposed and I still shoot skeet with the 870. Go figure. I own 2 Wingmasters in 12 ga. and 1 in 20 ga. The 20 has an old torn slip-on recoil pad that is held on with duct tape. I keep it this way for the express purpose of seeing the looks on the faces of some stuck-up shooters with their Grade V 4 barrel set Brownings who like to look down their noses at us working class folk. So much fun to watch them steam when I shoot the pants off 'em with a pump gun with duct tape. Tried the fine Browning BPS a few times but still like "Ol' dependable" The best of all the pumps IMO. Also of note. If you're gonna use the 870 hard, i.e. several rounds of skeet or trap every week for years you would do well to spend and extra $100 or so to keep a couple of action bar tubes in store, as after about 10 to 15 thousand rounds the action bars will detach from the tube, as they are held by a fairly tiny spot weld on each side. Other than this weak spot, it's a fantastic gun. I will NEVER own another brand of pump-gun. I plan to be buried with all 3 of mine!

The standard do all for all shotgun quite possibly the perfect all around gun.

About 15 years ago I bought a used Remington 870 w/ short riot barrel from a police surplus sale for $150.00. It has been my primary home defense weapon all this time. About 6 years ago I bought a used 26" modified choke barrel for $50.00 from a friend. I have been using the old 870 with the longer barrel for clay birds, and it works great!! I've taught my son and daughter to shoot it, and there's never been even the slightest hiccup with it. If all 870s are as good as mine then it is the best mass market shotgun ever. I want another one!

True the 870 is a bit over-rated, but value wise I feel it is probably the best single shotgun you could own. If you are only looking to buy one, it should be an 870 Express Super Mag w/ both barels. I've had for three years. As for jamming, the 870 is wonderful, the only jams I get are user initiated because my arms are tired and I didn't shuk the fore-end hard in a smooth crisp fashion, or the gun was at an awkward angle. The good news is when the 870 does jam, it's a freakin 12 gauge just reach in and pull the shell out. I'm most pleased with the versatility of mine. I can shoot smoothbore and rifled slugs, rem-choke on smoothbore barel, and I can fire even heavy magnum loads. 2 3/4, 3" 3.5" shells. Except in the prairies where distances are often too long, you can hunt anything with this one gun. Great bush gun. I'll never say a bad word about mine. Happy hunting!

I have had my 870 for over 20 years (26 years, in fact). It started out life as a 12 ga magnum with a 30" full choke barrel (these were the days before choke tubes). I used extensively for puddle jumping ducks for the first 2 years that I owned and I shot a lot of ducks with it. Shot a lot of trap as well. About 15 years ago I bought a 28" Remchoke barrel and have shot it a lot since then. I have probably run over 10,000 rounds through it (mostly hand loads). It is a fantastic gun. She is now semi retired. I bought a berretta Silver Mallard (A390) about 10 years ago and that has slowly taken over as my everyday gun. However, I did teach my 15 yr old to shoot with the 870 and now he uses it until I get my OU. He thinks he will get it for good at that point. Maybe, maybe not. She is like a good friend. I just can't say goodbye to her. Dale Neidhammer

Have owned my 870 for over 10 years, best pump gun ever! My gun has never misfired or jammed once! I have abused the crap out of this gun, it has seen salt marshes, deserts, flooded timber, forests, and just about anything else you can imagine. It has killed ducks, geese, dove, turkey, snipe, quail, rabbit, squirrel, and deer. The only possible complaint I could have is that the matted finish rusts too easily, especially here on the gulf coast. Excellent gun, I would suggest it to anyone.
28g hunter 10/24/2005
own four, great guns, don't buy one in 16 gauge, I've run 500 rounds through it with at least 50 jams so far. (on the other hand i've run over 5,000 through my 12 gauge, not one jam yet, same thing with my 28 gauge 870) As reliable as they come, 99% of the time.

870 WINGMASTER! Yea...Yea....YEESSIIRRR! A GREAT ALL AROUND SHOTGUN!!!! I've owned mine since 1979...brand new...paid $183.00 with tax included heh, heh, heh! This gun has seen almost every type of hunting environment including the sporting clays scene. It has digested probably 30,000+ rounds, with 95%-98% being reloads. This simple, yet rock solid performer has NEVER EVER failed me. A friend talked me into buying the 870 Wingmaster over an 1100. I never looked back and often think of his wise advice when I see others having problems with their shotguns. Receiver cut from a solid steel billet and super simple take down. Remington knew they had a winner back in the late 50's.....that's why they're still makin'em to this day!!
paulman 10/17/2005
This is the bst gun I have ever owned I have not hade it jam up once and I shoot 100 rounds every thursday. if you think this is a bad gun you are retarted.
andy419 09/20/2005
I recently bought the 870 Express and have had absolutely no problems with it. I use it for clay shooting and score very well with it. It cycles smoothly and has never jammed. You can't go wrong with this gun. Just to mention to the person whos gun jammed right out of the box, you are supposed to clean shotguns before you shoot them.
tump 09/16/2005
Bought an 870 express super mag. shot it right out of the box and it would Jam bad, was dissapointed. After a good cleaning and spraying soaking wet inside and out with rem oil the gun works fine.
bb36 08/03/2005
I got an 870 two years ago and shot more than 500 rounds with skeet, duck and goose hunting. This is also the shotgun model that I use at work.(police officer). This is the most reliable shotgun I have shot or heard of. It is a true work horse that I would recommend to anyone.
Herthjam 05/13/2005
Its a great, reliable gun. It works very good and isn't to expensive.
rabbit man 13 01/20/2005

DuckSlayer 11/10/2004
Best pump shotgun ever. I have my 870 for 5 years and have put it though everthing possible and it has never given me a problem. I have also shot Nova and Mossberg pump guns, and the 870 is the best.
vectorsector 09/29/2004
Anyone who thinks an 870 is prone to jamming probably could get a hummer stuck in a Wal Mart parking lot...its impossibe and most likely is due to handfuls of dirt and twigs crammed down the reciever...you simply cant find a better work horse of a shotgun...
dfdsa 09/13/2004
After some use and not abuse about 500 rounds. It started to jam when I tried to to pull the pump back. IT was like the shell was jamed in the barral or somthing. Not acceptible when there is dove flying over! The devil is in the details and I am dissapointed with the stamped crap and plastic. I will get rid of it and get a winchester.
CornCob 07/29/2004
Best Selling Shotgun of all time. Very reliable and versatile. I use it for skeet, birds, and home defense. Great first shotgun but moss 500 is too.
Bob Rival 07/20/2004
I had a Rem 870 it shot straight and handled well with one exception. Upon occasion it would not cycle. that is after firing it would fail to let me pull back the forearm and eject the shell.
jasguh05 05/20/2004
I own one and i use it for deer hunting in lower Michigan and Indiana, very accurate with slugs and i have never had a problem.
linkinparkguy 04/26/2004
THIS GUN IS THE BEST!
boofboom 02/10/2004
Very reliable, predictable, and common shotgun. I use it for my duck gun when I don't want to get more expensive guns nasty in the mud. I'm not much for pumps, but I can appreciate that this shotgun is at the top of the heap for pumps.
shotgunner 02/02/2004
Whats not to love,They fixed the double-feed problem, have had several and loved them all.Even the express
DickWeener 01/29/2004
The overall best shotgun for the money. These guns always look so nice and the quality is great. My number #1 choice for shotguns, if you need anything more , you aren't out there to hunt, you are out there to show off.
ryan_holt 10/15/2003
I own two and they are by far the best bird gun for the money. Very dependable even with reloads. The super mag has a good wallup with 3 1/2" mags so take a few asprin with you to the duck blind.
CaptainCredit 10/01/2003
Best shotgun the world has ever known. Period. Affordable and easy to maintain. I presently own 3 of them; all in 12 gauge. It is my intention to buy a 410, 28, 20 and 16. Can't say enough good things about the Remington 870!
eagleman25 09/08/2003
Great reliable gun for what it costs. But dont expect it to be a cadillac.
Pagehanger 08/18/2003
Learned to shoot with the 870 forty-five years ago and thought it was great, but only had the Win Model 12 and Browning A-5 on hand for comparison. For a better swinging, smoother action, better balance and good looks, try the BPS.
kolby1973 08/06/2003
I am in total favor of guns, and any and all kinds are good enough for me.
dovekiller 08/05/2003
The 870 is the gold standard against which all other magazine-fed shotguns must be compared. But it just does not fit me! I'm 5'11" 200lbs but I just cannot shoot these things. And I own 2 of them. My Winchesters are just the opposite. One of my 870's developed a crack in the wrist. Remington not only replaced the stock, they also replaced the forearm with a matching piece of beutiful walnut. Excellent service!
MBGMorden 08/01/2003
One of my favorite guns. I've had my 870 for about a year or so, but my father has one that he bought back in '78 that still works just as good as the day it came home. Both of them cycle smoothly and have never had a feed failure, and both have done extremely well in the field (I took 3 turkeys with mine last season. my father's gun has taken around 80 since he's had it). The gun also has a good solid feel to it (unlike the Mossberg's with their aluminum receivers and plastic trigger guards). Overall, I think this is probably the best pump action shotgun on the market.
Marinebuff 04/10/2002
BUY A MOSSBERG< ASK REMINGTON IS YOU CAN CHANGE THE BARRELS!
Mason 07/30/2001
I personally own two, and love them both. Great fit, flawless functioning. We have 1500+ at my agency, and all are going strong, with no major malfunctions. Some of them have been around quite a few years, with thousands of rounds through them.
bgmidgley 01/07/2001
I own two that have never failed and we have a thousand or so at work, many that are decades old and have had little maintainence for decades and they function fine.
Andy J. 01/05/2001
Love the smooth, solid action. Prefer the location of the safety and the release on the Mossberg. I like that you can get a good variety of aftermarket accesories for the 870.
artbuf 12/18/2000
Probably the best pump action shotgun on the market. This scatter gun is widely supported with accessories, and is used as the base for many upgraded shooting systems. It tends to be a bit heavy, but you appreciate that when everything still fits tight 20 years and 15,000 rounds later! (Okay, I shoot a lot....give me a break)
