There have always been talent shows. Many of the most popular singers from every era started as talent show winners, (or losers). If you don't like talent shows, don't watch. Would Kelly Clarkson have had the same career without this show? Likely not. This alone makes the show a worthwhile contributor to popular music.

It's a good show but so far this season I have'nt seen any promising talent.
Survivorfan1 02/07/2006
It gets three stars for decent entertainment value. The only time I watch it is at the beginning of each new season, when everyone is auditioning and the really crappy untalented idiots come out. Yes, Simon is harsh and I don't like his comments to female contestants that are what he considers "overweight" but the pathetic loons who come on and think they can sing but cannot deserve to be trashed by Simon. This season in particular has been bad - where are all the good singers???!! The show gets boring once they move to Hollywood and start eliminating people. Everyone sounds the same and all the songs are that annoying, teeny bopper, super-soulful/sugary pop garbage. They need to expand the show to allow more alternative and rock talents on!!
Benayha 02/02/2006
The show is terrible. Only Simon is an adequate judge. I would pay Paula to never sing or dance again. I don't even know who the black guy is. The talent from Austin was so bad that it was funny. The zombies had more talent than any of the contestants. The fans of the show must be zombies too. The only redeeming quality the show has is,that it must be viewed as a comedy. Like Plan 9 From Outer Space it is sooo bad that it might be ok. The audience is ridiculous and their screaming for talentless trollops and buffoons is amazing. Please lobotomize them.

The problem is that they try to top every season, and as a result, each year the show gets worse. Each year, more contestants use their bits just to be on t.v. I hate the staged aruguments between the judges. Also, I think the judges tampered with the vote, think about this. Season 1: There was issue of race when Tamara Grey was eliminated, American Idol denied issues was race. Season 2: Somehow the fan favorite Clay Aiken loses to the less talented Rueben Studdard. Coincidence, I don't think so. Everyone knows that Clay should have won. It didn't matter in the end though, because Clay is living in mansions, while Rueben is on his butt eating cheeseburgers. I still watch American Idol, but if the show continues to get more cheesy, I'll have to watch something else.

Not sure how a show that is a cross between the Gong Show and Star Search can be such a ratings phenomenon. They certainly do well playing up the human drama and suspense elements, well enough to get us to listen to second-rate versions of cheesy songs we'd immediately flip off if they came up on the radio. Viewers get emotionally invested enough to sit through endless filler segments, awaiting drawn-out voting results. Every season seems to have its share of controversies that only add to the watercooler buzz factor. And as much as people say they don't like Simon's over-the-top rudeness, many viewers would probably find the show to be too tame and middle-of-the-road without his dramatic, conflict-causing remarks that makes it more intense for each competitor.

I was watching the North Carolina tryouts today and some guy's trashy girlfriend said "He didn't win cause he ain't got no famous clothes."

This is the worst execuse from FOX! This show is destroying media and entertainment. Any people from this show ever makes another TV appearance or being heard on the radio. I will have say that I change the station or turn of the TV and/or radio. This show is not a funny show! It is an insult to American music. The American Idol winners should be called American Idiots. Simon is not a funny guy. He has to go away. That goes for the producer of the show and he should be fired. The future songs of the winners, I will never listen to any of them. This show should deserve a zero! End the madness now.

i think the show is terrific even though i think last years contestants were better. i was fortunate enough to see american idol on tour. but i do believe diana should have won over whats her name. this year i think they dicided right.
Gentle Jude 04/22/2005
I like American Idol because it is a clean reality show ie there is no obscenities in it. It is also interesting. But I also find it is very plastic and put on and there is far too much hype about it. The talent isn't all that good because when I compare the winner's songs that they put out onto the radio, they sound like beginners compared to the singers on the radio. The skill level isn't all that good compared to the music you get. Plus it isn't judged on the person's talent, it is judged on looks or who the person knows. Besides, I think it is all rigged. Plus it is all false, how they show the contestants riding in limos. In reality, they only do this to make it look good. Most of the contestants - the ones they don't think are good looking enough to go on TV have to brave it in the cold rain. It ia all plastic and shallow to me.
rizzo1 04/22/2005
Did anyone here about paula Abdul and Cory Clark having an affair? My wife heard it on the radio this morning. Something about she paid him 2 million dollars to keep his mouth shut. Is this true?
FightingIllini 45 03/30/2005
I love this show! I always have to do something on Wednesday night, so I tape it and when I get home I watch it. Go Anthony!
JessMarie 03/23/2005
Love It Always have cept last year i didnt watch it much b/c didnt really like any particular singer!
sassyred 03/21/2005
The show is fantastic and dramatic, especially on D-day. Simon Cowell is great because he tells it like it is and that's the way it should be. Everyone should know whether or not they are a good singer or not.
Maomania 02/27/2005
The first yeah was okay but not too exiting. The only two singers who were sticking out were Kelly and Tamyra. The rest (especially the boys) didn't do a great job.
congirl 02/18/2005
this yr. has the best competition of all. it will be hard to pick a winner.
sfalconer 02/09/2005
I think the best part of the show is really bad auditions. Very funny. The rest of it is boring and over dramatic.
judyjudy 02/09/2005
The contestants are great this year. I was very impressed with Regina Brooks and was surprised that you dropped her. Is there a chance that you can give her another oportunity? Judy Clinton, TN
Luvzfinenotbli nd 02/08/2005
American Idol is my favorite show. I think Simon is the greatest, tells the truth and doesnt mince words like Paula does or Randy. I think that the upcoming show this evening will be very good and will give us more talent and a look at how they get rid of prospective contestants by elemination. I hope that this season is better than last, although last was good this one looks to be great. Keep up the good work Simon and get some backbone Paula and Randy!
Elski 02/06/2005
I give American Idol five stars! D'you know why? Because Simon, everyone's favorite judge (well, mine anyway), has teamed up with PeTA to produce anti-fur ads? Yup, it's true! Simon has recently appear in a PeTA add featuring the slogan, 'If you wouldn't wear your dog, don't wear fur!' If you don't belive me, check it out yourself. And while you're at it, take his advice. Fur is cruel and unnesecary; ditch it. http://www.peta2.com/ot/o-scowell.asp?c=33

i think that leroy was off the hook. i guess he was just way to crunk for the judges. and ass you now simmon is what every call him so i think that leroy was cute and he defantly can step because he was off the vchain

this show is really good i would just like to know when the real thing is going to start cuz im doing a project on it so i wish that it would hurry up and start cuz i dont care about all of the audditions
Skizero 01/20/2005
this show is so groovy. i just love sitting home and figuring out what kind of music i'm going to be told to like next. i hope this seaon they get a new William Hung. but i hope he's not asian. i'd like to see a black retarded man with one lazy eye come on to American Idol and try to sing songs by the 1980's band, Glass Tiger. that would be neat. then Simon could rip on him and call him names and revel in the fact that he(simon) was once a fat, lazy idiot who spent a lot of cash on plastic surgery. then the black retard(let's call him LeRoy). will get the world behind hime and make an album. He could tour with Clay Aiken and the two could rock our world in 2005.

I LOVE THIS SHOW ITS TOTALY GREAT. ON SEASON ONE JIM VERRAROS WAS THE BEST! HE SHOULD HAVE WON. RJ AND AJ WERE REALLY GOOD TOO. FANTASIA SUCKS THOUGH! CLAY IS GREAT! AND WHAT HAPPENED TO JUSTIN GUARINI HE WAS AWSOME TOO.
florence 12/11/2004
I think Fantasia has good voice control but her voice is SO SCRATCHY. It's like, she's Macy Gray no.2 or something. I think Latoya should have won or at least Diana. They had great potential.
Mr Evangel 09/27/2004
This show is the best. I hope it lasts forever!! I like the way they will do a season then have it go off for a while and then bring it back. This allows it not to get old.

MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER
truthbtold 07/07/2004
I do not think th eshow is rigged. The show is based on viewer wotes. Everyone's opinions are not the same. There are no restrictions on who can call in a vote so undoubtedly there are those who call in bogus votes just because they think it's funny. There are many people who think that Clay is a better singer than Reuben. It is simply a matter of you prference in music genres and singing style. Personally, I think Reuben deserved to win simply because he sang better on a more consistent basis than did Clay. Race aside, Reuben was the better choice, as was Fantasia this time around. The show before the finale Diana did not do as well as Fantasia and voters let her know it by voting Fantasia American Idol. Not to mention Diana is young and I think it's best she concentrate on finishing school rather than the hectic career of being a pop star. Fantasia's sexual history is not what we voted on; her talent is. There are many stars-black & white- who've had children and are not married. As one person said, it is the job of parents to make sure their children do not follow the example set by others, but to be their own persons.
EternalMoonGK 06/13/2004
Last year did anyone complain when Rueben won over Clay???? NO!!!! You obviously haven't met the Claymates. Do we want to idolize a slutty church signer who got herself pregnant, who has a boyfriend but still letting america know that she is looking for a man You have to sleep with many men before being considered slutty, moron. As for the looking for a man, Fantasia was obviously kidding. Gee, you have never heard of humor, have you? This show is SO rigged! I went on a date with a former contestant and they must sign contracts stating that Fox can alter the votes- which they obviously do everytime they have a bad ratings night! Do you think we're going to believe that you went out on a date with a former contestant? You aren't the brightest crayon in the box, are you? She is not a good role model. She is an unwed, teen mother. shoudn't this country be teaching young teens better than that. she is going to have teens looking up to her wanting to be like her. If a girl wants to follow in her footsteps, then let that be her parent's problem. And if a child is so impressionable, then her parents shouldn't let her watch the show or even t.v. for that matter. Because there are many people on t.v. who have probably done far worse than getting pregnant.
scarletfeather 05/29/2004
I have to agree with loveFantasia that American Idol is probably rigged. I was addicted to it last year and watched it religiously, but I was disenchanted when Ruben won. To me Clay Aiken seemed better, and he was certainly willing to try different things. But nobody how hard he tried it wasn't good enough. Ruben was hyped as the likely winner from Day One, although he always sounded the same and never did anything different. I didn't watch it this year, but I heard Fantasia was the ges' favorite. She may very well have deserved to win;I haven't seen her perform. But I do agree with loveFantasia that it seems suspicious that we're never told who got exactly how many votes, and yes,it is suspicious that whoever Simon and Company like, always wins.
loveFantasia 05/27/2004
I love the show A.I. I am glad that Fantasia won, also that Rubin won, and also that Kelly won...however, I am a little suspicious of the voting. I mean, isn't it odd that whoever the judges like, always wins. Now it's either their comments (which I doubt) that influence the voters OR it's rigged. Think about it...we never know who comes in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. for each week's voting, and we don't know how accurate it is, who is in charge of voting, nor how official it is...it's all a secret isn't it. With so many votes coming in, maybe they need a Price Waterhouse having it sealed and delivered rather than having the host announce the 'winner' on the show. Who's minding the vote counter? It's rigged!
terzdance 05/25/2004
Love the show. You know you're addicted to American Idol when... ...you get the American Idol web browser. I came across this today and thought it was pretty cool. :D Aside from it being American Idol, its actually a really good software. you have to have internet explorer for it to work but most people already do. http://www.istreamcast.com/funbrowser/funportal/pro ductpage_americanidolbrowser.htm Its a free download too. can't beat that ~terzdance Go Fantasia!

I love this show
eieieoeieio 05/19/2004
American Idol sucks since they started with the text messaging voting system. Jasmine is weak and Diana is inconsistent. LaToya and George should have been in the top 3 along with Fantasia. I will not watch another AI season if Jasmine wins... its all about sympathy and teenie bopper votes!
kelli ann 05/18/2004
i love the show but i don't see what everyone see's in fantasia. yeah she can sing good and everything but there is no way sheis an american idol. She is not a good role model. She is an unwed, teen mother. shoudn't this country be teaching young teens better than that. she is going to have teens looking up to her wanting to be like her. i don't know, but i know that i wouldn't consider her a good role model or an american idol.
latoyais#1 05/17/2004
I hope that all of us that really enjoyed American Idol protest it so there ratings dropped and that the voting system changes. We should all be given a pin # either via mail or internet, that is good for one vote only ,per each voting night, this is one way i feel that the voting can't go wrong, i tried to cast a vote for Latoya who i felt should of and always will be the winner in my eyes and it was always busy for 2 hours and she looses .What wrong with that piture? its been rigged, for that i will protest and not watch. we all must do that to get our message across,i allready have over 3000 people to support this will you become 3001 i hope so and have a grest day
BerryColGuy 05/17/2004
This show is SO rigged! I went on a date with a former contestant and they must sign contracts stating that Fox can alter the votes- which they obviously do everytime they have a bad ratings night! Whenever they have bad ratings they always boot someone who is actually good to get the world talking about it- and everyone seems to be buying into their game! Get a clue!!!!!!!!!!
Aussiemarty 05/16/2004
What have you Americans done? I can't believe you voted off the most talented singer. Latoya puts a lot of professional stars to shame she is such a polished performer, and thank goodness she will probably be flooded with recording contracts. Simon was right whether you like it or not, Latoya and Fantasia are in a class of their own. So now we are left with 3 contestants. Jasmine sang atrociously and should have been eliminated, and she knew it. Diana is OK, but Fantasia leaves them both for dead. She has style, presence, delivery and she's not ashamed to let her emotions show. Good on you babe, I hope people have got the sense to vote you the winner. You deserve it.
JasPatJas 05/14/2004
I love American Idol. I watched the first two which were really good. The third one is a little strange. The votes dont make a whole lot of sense to me. I dont think it has anything to do with race tho. I like Diana the best & I hope she wins. My favorites were George and Latoya but since America voted them off I want Diana to win. I like Jasmine too but I dont think her voice is strong enough to win. I think Fantasia is cool but i really dont like her voice. sorry Fantasia fans. I hope Diana wins. Have a nice day!
michele0361 05/13/2004
After last nights show I was shocked that Latoya was voted off. She has the best voice. To me the show is not for the best singer which Latoya is, it is who has the most family voting for them. Last nights show (5-12-04) will be the last one we watch.
smd 05/13/2004
I vote every week about an hour after the show ends and I could not believe that the lines were still busy when I tried to vote for Fantasia. I kept hitting the redial button and finally decided to wait another half hour. I was surprised to find the lines still busy, I thought everyone must be voting for Fantasia, but I now know that wasn't the case. I was persistant and kept hitting redial on the house phone and the cell and I finally got through. This makes me wonder if anyone else had that problem and if so, who doesn't want the votes to go through. To find out if something was wrong with my phone I tried to vote for a different contestant and surprise, surprise, had no problems getting through. Fantasia is my favorite because she does more than just sing but I have always liked Diana and I'm happy to see her still in the finals. I wonder if other people couldn't get through to vote and finally gave up. I question this because I had no problems voting the week a record number of people called in and the lowest vote was 4 million. I tried, my husband tried so we had three phones going for a good part of Tuesday night. What's the deal.
whitepeoplerul es 05/13/2004
All...stop that racist comment thing...why do people raise the race card everytime they lose a competition.....Last year did anyone complain when Rueben won over Clay???? NO!!!! But look who is seeling out his songs nowadays (its Clay)....and who placed one of the worst songs in VH1s countdown its Rueben....comeon guys...talent is not everything, its the whole packaging that counts and who poeple thinks might be worth idolizing.....Do we want to idolize a slutty church signer who got herself pregnant, who has a boyfriend but still letting america know that she is looking for a man, a 25 year old who did not even finish school wedding singer.....ot two ideal teenage girls who attends school, works on their assignments while rehearsing and who have big dreams in their future....Just give this a break, it just so happens that america wants to idolize someone worth idolizing.
crg 05/13/2004
I think that the comment by sexy-o-la is racist when she says: The world knows that Black people are the best singers. Racism isn't only white vs. black, you know.
DSF 05/13/2004
If you want to make sure that the real talent is not eliminated early have America vote the individual thatthey would like to see leave the show rather than their favorite. America can then focus on the one individual with the least talent rather than spreading their votes for a few individuals. When it is down to the final two, you vote for the best.
