Repetitive, throbbing beat no matter what band or song you're listening to. In my opinion, not a genre at all, but a 'drug add-on', used only to enhance your drug experience but not for real listening.

Raggae has a unique feel to it, it generally has a slow beat and rhythem making it good music to relax to.
fitman 04/20/2009
There are very, very few poor records from the classic period (ca. 1970 - 1979), and very little of interest since. Many of the best Reggae artists are virtually unknown in the USA. Some suggested listening: Culture, Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, Dennis Brown, Toots & The Maytals, Lee Perry & The Upsetters, The Heptones, Junior Murvin, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Dillinger, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru etc.
Astromike 04/20/2009
My opinion and speaking as an American, I really gotta be in the mood for this. Usually sounds better when your drunk or stoned. Mostly mellow easy style music.

dascientiss 04/07/2009
Its kinda boring. Everytime I hear it,I either fall asleep or pray that the CD's over
RainMan12 03/31/2009
Outside of Bob Marley, it can get a little boring
Humorbot 03/29/2009
Quite good in certain situations but I am not laid-back enough to listen to it all day everyday.

I like it and respect it as a musical form of expression, although I wouldn't say I'm overly knowledgeable about it. I'm friends with a Jamaican lady who has turned me on to musicians I likely wouldn't have otherwise heard. A little bit of reggae, though, goes a long way for me, and I listen to it sparingly.

Hey some reggae is pretty good and should not be tottally associated with pot heads!!!!!I will admit its not my favored choice of music but never the less it can be good listening!

As I learn more about the range of reggae sounds and influences, I keep finding new sounds and artists who I love, especially on the indie labels. Reggae is more then Trenchtown Rock - it ranges from ska and punk to ambient dub, with plenty of interesting stops along the way, including dubstep and dancehall. If you're only familiar with Bob Marley, I'd recommend also checking out some contemporary headliners such as Michael Franti and Spearhead (sounds similar to Ben Harper, IMO), Matisyahu, Sister Nancy, and Mavado. If you're more interested in hearing some of the dub reggae greats, try putting King Tubby on Pandora or pick up a Lee Scratch Perry album and prepare for a session with one of music's most inventive recording artists. Then there's a whole world of New Zealand dub, the paragon of which is Tiki Taane, formerly of Salmonella Dub. If you want to stay closer to home, check out the Gorillaz underrated dub album "Laika Come Home" or "Radiodread," collection of Radiohead dub covers by the Easy Star All Stars collective. Finally, on the indie side, check out Dubconscious, Random Test Reggae, and anything on the Springline Music label. And that's just the recordings - the live music is of course another level.

Very rarely I'll like a song if it's catchy and not too freaky.

I don't really know enough about it to say much except when people try to immitate reggae that aren't (Like Shaggy) it usually turns out pretty funny.
