I can't believe Wiley is gone. If you haven't already, read some of the featured columns they posted on Page 2 in his memory (on Eric Davis, 9-11, etc.). If you don't appreciate this guy's approach to sports, to work, to life, to God, (the list goes on), you soon will. I would have loved to see the fruits of the collaboration he and Bill Simmons were planning before his untimely death. Their styles, though totally different, would have complemented each other well, I think. R.I.P.

Ralph Wiley makes sports uncomfortable. He picks at things - digs into dynamics and people and situations, and hints at dark motivations for things that you never would have thought of by yourself. The key word here is hints - he's never crass, and leaves a lot for you to figure out for yourself. His work on ESPN.com Page 2 has become must reading for me. The contrast with the Sports Guy is pretty compelling - both talented writers, both extremely perceptive, and yet day and night from each other in terms of outlook. **Update June 14** It wasn't time for Ralph to go yet. He had a lot more to say. Way too young, and way too talented to go out this soon. I feel like I've been punched in the stomach.

Anybody who ever looked at an athlete with a fat contract that didn't deliver and said what an ass should read Wiley's stuff. Not necessarily defending athletes, he rips them regularly, but in looking at what's missing from an athlete's game, Wiley sometimes gets you to look at what's missing in your game. I don't play hoops, but I do know when I didn't bring my A game to work or when I let somebody down cuz their was nothing in it for me. I like Wiley. His take on sports is an examination of what motivates or scares all of us wherever you are and whatever you do. His column is the only thing I read on espn.com. You disagree? Tell me about it then. lastb@hotmail.com

Love this guys delivery, even if he is extremely misguided in believing there is ANY entertainment value in the NBA. Yes they are more talented athletes then in the college ranks, butthe spirit of sport is dead out there inthe land of 6 million a year role players.
