"Kick out the Jams" is an incredible live album. The MC5 wanted total freedom and high energy and that is what they delivered in concert. Their subsequent albums are a major disappointment though. These studio releases are mostly filled with mediocre 'garage rock'. The MC5 did not produce enough good material to justify 5 stars.

Hard driving power pop! These guys were thrust into an anti-government socialist agenda but in reality all they wanted to do was party and screw!

Great group, but while they did have SOME influence on these genres, I think that is, in part, exaggerated and/ or revisionist history. They belong to the late 60's/ early 70's, and the strongly political/ social context of their music has relatively little to do with the topical concerns of punk/ postpunk rock, although I guess that their high energy rock and anti-authoritarian attitude was indeed a forerunner of sorts. They really had little in common , musically, with most of the acts on this list, as they were influenced at times by free jazz and the Stones, and some of their material is hard pop or proto-metal.

Dunno how these guys get as much recognition as they do. Sure, Kick Out the Jams is a cool song and all but c'mon! This was NOT punk in any form. They strike me as being more of a hippy band than anything else.

christ, these guys are a blast of rock power. i thought i'd really heard rock, but then i listened to Kick out the Jams and I realized everything before was just a warm-up for this album.

I always loved punk, but this was a band I didn't really get into until recently. A lot of what they did sounded like pop filler...well done, but pop filler nonetheless. However, when they were really able to pull it together, like they did on their live album, there was nobody fiercer or better.
