I will never rent or buy from Blockbuster Video in Tucson, Arizona again. I have had money on gift cards that mysteriously disappeared upon check-out and the clerks seem borderline retarded. I had $1.75 on a Gift Card today which would have paid for half of my rental fee. I also had a DVD in hand that I was also going to pay cash for. When she told me, There's no money left on this card... that's the straw that broke the camel's back. Never again will I go to Blockbuster, nor will I ever purchase Gift Cards for my employees (Christmas, Secretary's Day, etc.)

People that have problems with Blockbuster will have problems renting videos anywhere. Bottom line, return your item on time and you won't have a problem. 9 our of 10 of you probably have a bad attitude and want something for nothing. Also, sure, there are bad employees everywhere, not just at Blockbuster. Just because you have a bad experience at one store does not mean another one is the same way. Another thing, who cares if you don't rent there anymore, millions of people still do, so your money will make no difference. None of you are taking into account that there are tons of Blockbusters and the company will never, I repeat, never go under no matter what quarrles you may have. In essence, Blockbuster must be doing something right. You people represent a minute number of video renters, overall Blockbuster is great!!! Go to Hollywood or Premier if you don't like us!!!

I have been a loyal Blockbuster customer for over 10 years . I have dutifully rented and returned every movie on time. For this I have been shouted at because of simply asking a question about a 2-for-$20 sale on previewed movies (I asked if I could buy one for $10.00). I have had make special trips to Blockbuster at least 3+ times to straighten out incorrect late charges only to find out the DVD's weren't shelved or improperly shelved. Also, their late fees are abominable. I read on the internet that 20% of their profit is from late fees. At any rate, after over 10 years business I still felt like a newbie everytime I would go in the store. Blockbuster does not deserve to be in business in my estimation. I'm turning to Netflix!

Try Netflix...to hell with Blockbuster. No late fees, incompetant employee's to deal with. Have had problems of all sorts from Blockbuster for years, can't believe I have maintained my membership this long. Last straw..purchased popcorn sweet & salty the most disgusting tasting popcorn I have ever tasted. Went to return one unused tub and they would not accept. Rather than lose $1.50 they definately lost a $20+ per week customer. Stay away from them if you can...they are the worst, hopefully they will become obsolete in the near future.
bbutler76 06/02/2004
Great selection but I think they screw you on late charges. I've turned in movies on time and gotten charged for late fees. This has happened more than once.
Skwirl 05/18/2004
How about all you whining little crack babies get a life and join the real world. If you keep a movie past its due date, guess what, you just rented it again. So if it was a 2 day rental and you're gonna be late, keep it another 2 days. Same thing for the week long rentals. It costs you the same price whether it is 2 hours or 2 days late, so just hold onto it. The reason you pay the rental price for each period you keep it out, is because now someone else can't rent it. Life isn't fair, but if you call yourself an adult, then act like it. Take responsibility for yourself. If your movie is late, take it inside, pay the balance, and you won't be hassled as some of you whiners like to say. And if you have a problem with a company, don't post it on some message board, e-mail them over and over with your complaint, they actually will help you.
BlackfootNY 05/04/2004
The only thing that they were busting were my pockets. Shame on them. As for their motto that says, Guaranteed in Stock or Free is a bunch of garbage. They are always going to give you a problem when their items are not in stock.
kogopan 03/30/2004
the late fees are way too high
Falcon91Wolvrn 03 03/25/2004
Sorry - I can't support a store that censors objectionable videos.

Suits in the board room are constantly coming up with ways to get more money in late fees. I understand that they are a business and have to make money but I wish they would find a better, less tricky way to do it.

Selection- B Service- C Return policies F- Trick you into thinking you have a couple of days to watch the movie, it is places like these that have me wanting to go back to the theaters. At least there I know what to expect.

Blockbusters over here are diabolical. The range of films are pathetic and the staff are incompetent. I'd rather watch films that happen to be on TV or pick one of the 100 + DVD's in our collection, or better still go to the cinema rather than face a sullen, mumbling member of staff who takes forever and a day to complete one transaction.
kolby1973 11/17/2003
I love the Blockbuster I go to. The employees are always very helpful, and I can usually find a good movie to rent. I do NOT like how they don't have alot of old classics that I enjoy however. They need to improve this service tremendously. And I am surprised they haven't yet.
jhenrie 10/30/2003
We dispise Blockbuster!! Not only are their return policies ridiculous, but their policy on late fees leaves much to be desired. First, you have to have a credit card on file with them. Then, if a day has passed, & you haven't returned your movie yet, they start calling you. Then, after you return it, you start getting the little collection notice postcards in the mail. Then, if you take your sweet time to pay the $3.28, they automatically bill it to your credit card. Then, in the meantime, you've sent it in, & they deposit your check (knowing that they've already taken it from your credit card). Then, you go in the next time, & the employee acts all pumped for you that you have a "credit." Well, no sh*t we have a credit you Nazi's!!! By the way, has Blockbuster forgotten who's keeping who in business? When you don't return one of their movies promptly, they act like a bookie who's given you a large loan. *****We ONLY go to Hollywood Video now. We don't mind driving past 3 Blockbuster's to do this, because it's worth it!!! We often return movies late, & we're always ready & willing to pay the late fees. BUT, at Hollywood, they don't harrass us. They just have us pay it the next time we come in, & they don't make a state of the union address about it. Blockbuster has gotten too big for their britches!!****

Censorship is what this bullshit corporate monster is all about. Top that off with poor , uncaring service and you have the biggest rip-off in the world for videos.
veishboy 09/18/2003
On one occasion the employee would not honor a sale price on used DVD's even though the sign clearly said that all formats were on sale. The clerk would't even take the time to look at their own ad. When I wrote a letter of complaint to Blockbuster headquarters, I received no response. On another occasion, the employee forgot to remove the security strip from a rental DVD, so when I got home, I could not open the case. I had to make a trip back to the store to have it removed, and received no apology, or compensation.
rob96778 09/14/2003
I've stopped doing with this company recently after they refused to refund my money for a defective video tape. The "manager" instead insist that I pay $7 for "damage" that is not responsibility. After about 10 years as a customer, they'd rather call me a liar and steal $7 from my credit card (at least the clerk theatened to do that) than give me the benefit of the doubt. Any company that stupid doesn't deserve my business and they are not getting any more of it.
michaeljocow 09/08/2003
Blockbuster has goods like avibalty of new and old movies in DVD or VHS. But they also have bad stuff like how it takes 3 weeks before you can get a game like Medal Gear, Madden, or NCAA Football, also it seenes like the employes at night (when most crowed sucks) but during the day they are great at Maple St./Omaha, NE
StanUzbeck 08/25/2003
Not too bad if you are in the mood for some new releases. However I am a huge fan of horror movies and cheesy sci-fi, which are nowhere to be found at blockbuster. My blockbuster doesn't even have a section for horror, so you might find something like Scream under the comedy or drama section. Pretty weak selection all around, as they tend to carry only the most popular titles. Also, although the staff are always friendly and helpful, I don't like how they insist on calling me by my first name whenever I rent a movie. I may not be any older than they are, but using my first name assumes more familiarity than I am comfortable with. Stop using my name, people.
blinkyemily 08/22/2003
Blockbuser has a good selection and all, but we were told when we bought our dvd player at Circuit City that many of the larger DVD/Video rental places put a wax on there DVDs to make them last longer and it can funk up your DVD player.

I had a terrible experience with Blockbuster Video. I had checked out an X-Box video game at it's norm for 5 days, got home played it awhile and didn't like it, so I took it back to Blockbuster within 2 hours (returning it in the little slot) and rented a different game. Well I had continued renting different games and movies for a couple of months when one day I went in and they said I had never returned the game that I didn't like and returned within 2 hrs.??? I explained to them the situation and that it was returned and lets just say it wasn't why was I allowed to rent games and movies for those couple of months with nothing ever being said? The manager explained to me I didn't return it and she had just called me at home the day before and talked to me about it. Only problem was is at the time I had no telephone so, I ask her if she was sure and she said positive. I get her to dial my # on their files and guess what .....# was disconnected so I told her it was not me she spoke with and it wasn't my problem they lost it or someone else didnt return it on time. Needless to say I had to wait for another month to pass for them to do inventory to find the game and yes they had put the game in a wrong case and I got the run around for no apparent reason. They didnt even offer me a free rental or an apology for the inconvience. I also have lots of friends who this has happened to, and hear other complaints about Blockbuster frequently.
sumatra 08/18/2003
i've never had a problem, being a responsible adult, i don't have a problem with late fees, so i don't know if they are excessive. i'm always greeted with hello, or how ya doin? when i first walk in- reguardless if it's really busy. this is one of 2 places i get movies, the other is the local library.
kmg1171 08/12/2003
Blockbuster sucks. They love to charge late fees even when you turn in the movies on time. One time we rented a movie, and I remembered we returned it early because it was a shitty movie, and a couple months later we got a notice in the mail from Blockbuster saying we owed a late fee of $130.00! Those idiots.
ricottma 08/10/2003
Blockbuster does not believe in Indi film. Blockbuster edits thier films. Blockbuster will not carry Troma Films (www.Troma.com) stupid stupid store...
elvarojas 07/28/2003
I have been using blockbuster for years. I had a $12 late fee after 2 weeks that they sent to a collection agency. I will never use them again.

High pricrd and what is with the idea I have to keep registering----over and over and over? I hadn't gone to Hollywood Video for almost 4 years and I was still in the system----no hassles! The way it should be!

As for the training issue I believe that it varies from store to store. There is a series of classes, videos and workbooks that an employee is supposed to complete for every level of BBV employment (i.e. CSR, SL, ASM etc.). Most stores require these to be finished in a reasonable amount of time others may not. As for movie knowledge training employees recieve five free rentals a week. But just like everyone else BBV people have likes and dislikes so some employees will only watch certain types of films. Others will branch out. To the folks who are unhappy about certain types of movies not having as much inventory room (i.e. classics, educational, etc.) it is simply because those titles do not rent out as well and are not as profitable. Store only have a certain amount of space to keep movies. Titles and genres that do not generate enough revenue are removed to make way for ones that do. For example- Lately there has been a surge in popularity of Anime- to reflect that the Anime section in our store is rapidly gaining size. As for late fees my best advice is keep your reciept. The name of each movie and the day it's due is listed there. Walk your movies into the store and have an employee check them in right then. They can tell you right away if your movie is late or not and why. BBV actually has a 2 hour grace period. Movies are due at Noon but if you walk them in at 12:30 and ask an employee to check them in you will not be late (unless you are returning them at 12:30 a day after they were due.) The thing that throws most people about the latefees is that the day you rent them counts as the first day. So you rent a 2 day release on Thursday- on the red cover it say "due on the 3rd day by noon" Thursday is day one, Friday is day 2, Saturday is day three. So Saturday by noon. The time of the day the movie rented out has no bearing on the day or time it is due. BBV does not operate in 24 hour days- if you rent a 2 day movie on Thursday at Midnight it is still due back by Noon on Saturday. I hope this helps.
dickgozinya 06/25/2003
I have to agree that Blockbuster Sux. I used to rent a movie and maybe keep it a day over then turn it in and just pay the 3.00 fee when I rented again no big deal. Well I didn't rent for a while and got a collection notice for 3.56 I could'nt believe this. I always pay for my movies and don't mind paying late fees I just was busy and didn't have time to rent for a few wks. I thought that was cheesy. I have noticed that they got rid of thier old movies and only carry new ones now. That sux because I like some older comedys and stuff. I now go to a nice little mom and pop store that has all kinds of older and new movies and don't come after me with a vengence for a 3.56 late fee that I will pay when I rent again. Plus to the employees that were whining on this page about how horible it is to stand at a register in an AC building and put movies back on the shelf, I don't really have to much simpithy for you. Welcome to the real World of Working. I really don't know to many people who like thier jobs or thier bosses.
hrod 06/17/2003
Blockbuster video is now an out-dated idea. The future of movie rentals is PAY-PER-VIEW.
BBVsucks 06/11/2003
As a blockbuster employee, I must say that I agree that employees are undertrained. The corporation has such greed that they try to get you trained so quick, they expect you to be ready and proficient in less than 2 days, with emphasis on register operations. They also push those stupid reward sales, and if you don't meet your "quota", you get a nice little happy chat from the SM (store manager). Plus, I know this for a fact, but headquarters will never admit it, nor will any manager or anyone face to face, but I've seen how much they make on late fees, or as the corporate monkies want to call them "extended viewing fees", and it is nearly half of all thier rental revenue on any given day... but you didn't hear it from me. A little advice to anyone returning a rental in on the day its due: Turn in the movie before you go to work in the morning, cause come noon time, the checkin computer will be ringing like a vatican priest on crack sounding the bell for mass.
MonkeyPox 06/11/2003
Over priced sewer bring in a magnet and clean up their tapes.
DrFeelgood03 05/28/2003
It is pretty good except for the late fees.
eunmi 05/20/2003
They're pretty much the only game in town. I used to be a store manager (7 years), but since I've left, I've noticed that training and store appearance have really gone downhill. Wasn't like this 10 years ago. Their DVDs for sale are much higher than at Best Buy or Circuit City, and if you want them to match the price, you must physically bring in the sales ad, unlike CC's policy. Will they make it? Probably, but affordability of DVDs no longer makes them a "sure" long-term bet.
PunkMime 05/15/2003
As a former employee of Blockbuster, I can attest to the fact that employees there get little, if any, real training. The selection of older and foreign films is bad. As for the BB employee comment below... if you don't like dealing with your guests, then you are in the wrong line of work. What is wrong with you? You are the perfect example of what is wrong with "Big Blue".
gold9001000253 5188 03/31/2003
I don't know that I can make you laugh, since I find this very unfunny. Blockbuster was a good place to rent when I started. I am a gold member. I live alone, but my first year on REWARDS I upgraded to gold by reason of earning over 100 free rentals. I have seen a deliberate and ongoind attempt to beliberately force the obsolescence of VHS after managing to sell me about 40 or 50. I have also seen register rental coupons replaced with worthless Freebie.com points which are difficult to access and harder to use. But worst of all, despite supposedly resolving this on the phone, I have not recieved my monthly free rental coupons in the mail since last July. I still rent at Blockbuster but less than half as much as I did. You have turned a great family place into corporate poo-poo. (I was nice-didn't use the word that actually came to mind.) I hope you take this e-post seriously. I'm trying hard to like Blockbuster, but it's hard when Blockbuster doesn't seem to like me. Sincerely, Stephen L Miller Athens, Texas
wired2k 03/07/2003
Did you ever think how hard it is to work at blockbuster. I work there part time and its the most stressful job I have had dealing with customer service, just because you are sincere doesnt mean that everybody is. People will come up with every lie in the book to get out of paying 3 bucks for a late fee. Then they will drive away in their bmw. I ahve dealt with more ignorant people in the last 2 years than I have dealt with in my whole life. I have had movies thrown at me I have been sworn at and called names. Blockbuster employees are well trained, and if they charge you for something or call you when it snows deal with it, its just a movie and it is just 3 bucks. I'm sure the employees didn't ask to work during the snowstorm and I am sure they weren't eager to call you about your late movie. I do what corporate tells me because that is my job. And the customer is not always right. In the really world what makes more money is right. Because, trust me if I could I would take off everybodys late fees and give everyone free rentals. And if you don't like it, rent your videos somewhere else. Employees may get free rentals, but we still have to pay late fees like everyone else. Blockbuster, does have widescreen dvds, I don't know where you have been going but its not blockbuster. With a lot of titles widescreen is the only dvd for rent or it is a double sided disc with both formats. I personally prefer widescreen but you would be surpised how many people specifically request pan&scan(fullscreen) and get angry if we don't have it, because they say that they hate the black lines.
President -X-D 03/04/2003
Until they start carrying widesreen films as an alternative to the hacked and slashed "fullscreen" DVDs, they are worthless as a film entertainment store. They seem to think people are stupid and don't give customers any credit for knowing that widescreen presentations REPRESENT THE FILM AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE PRESENTED.
margepfeifer 02/20/2003
this weekend we took movies out at the Blockbuster in middle river maryland and we had a snow storm that the snow total was a record for the state of maryland in some areas it was at least 3 feet deep and the governor but out a state of emergency schools and businesses are closed all week and blockbuster has the nerve to call and say they are charging late fees on our two movies that we return today. I can not believe that any store would have the nerve to cahrge customers late fees when they can not get out on the side streets. We were lucky we got out on Thursday and the first place we went was blockbuster
myotisbum 02/06/2003
this store may have the variety, but they like to charge late fees on purpose?
BIGBABY 02/02/2003
Blockbuster in Massachusetts is the best place to buy or rent videos. They have a very big selection, ranging from all types. The Blockbuster employees here are nice and helpful. Haven't had a problem with the store yet. They have excellent and NEW movies for $5. I bought IT for 5 bucks.
bmw_iscool 01/05/2003
blockbuster is everywhere its the best has the most movies you cant trust other places
hope2068 01/03/2003
The employees do not receive any movie specific education. The only type of training an employee receives is how to handle the customers and how to run the cash register. If one of the employees is particularly movie-savvy, it is because that person loves movies and is intelligent. I ran a Blockbuster for about a year and most of the people that we were forced to hire are dumber than a box of rocks. You are lucky to find someone that will come in on time and won't steal you blind. If you can find someone that knows movies it is a bonus. I am a movie buff and loved talking with the public about movies that they may have not seen but are great. I had a huge following because people cannot find anyone to help them who knows movies. So if you find such a person at your local blockbuster, grab onto them and learn from his or her knowledge. The rentals are expensive and the help is so-so. I normally rent from the local mom and pop video store in my hometown. I always have a great conversation with the man that owns it!! He really knows his movies.
Galomorro 11/14/2002
Boring. This and other video stores do not have enough educational/classics videos. They tend to only concentrate on the biggest hits. More of a variety is needed. There are lots of educational videos out there but video stores do not carry them.
sperryc 11/14/2002
I have to disagree with the comment here that questions how well Blockbuster employees are trained. Anyone who rents movies at the Blockbuster in West Farms/Farmington, CT knows exactly what I'm talking about. This one guy in particular, I can say with utmost confidence, knows more about any given film -- its plot, its cast, its inspiration, how thick the lens was that it was shot through, etc. -- than that film's own director. From the early 007 movies to the most feminine of romantic comedies, this guy is THE authority. There is no genre that he couldn't write a book on. And he is not shy about sharing this wealth of knowledge with the ignorant masses, either, even if it means harshly scolding customers who describe movies to each other inaccurately. (He once broke a grown man down to tears for misconstruing the premise behind the movie "Bottlerocket".) Obviously, his is a special case, where such rules as "customer knows best" simply don't apply. He is the connoisseur of connoisseurs and anyone who crosses him, beware. Hats off to Blockbuster training, if in fact Blockbuster training is to thank for this type of expertise, which no video rental store should go without.
magicalstars 08/06/2002
The videos are great but extremely pricey. They want £3.75 for one night!
ClassicTVFan47 06/03/2002
Although the movie rentals are slightly overpriced, their selection is great. Also, their new video game plan ($20 a month for unlimited game rentals) and their new buy-back-after-rent plan (rent a DVD, get it pre-played for $9.99 later down the line) are bringing up the business. They also have a great previously-viewed/played collection, hardware rentals, blank tapes that are reasonably priced and yummy snacks, all in one store.
