10/29/2005 | Almost a precursor for "The Ghost Whisperer", not as bad as the commercials led me to believe. Halle Berry plays a clinical psychologist who is wrongly imprisoned for a murder she didn't commit, and has to escape to clear her good(and sexy) name.

09/18/2004 |  The only source of scariness in the film is the music and sound: not the plot, not the direction, nor the acting (especially not the dialogue). Naturally when you hear sudden loud drum-like noises interrupt a dead silent moment, you're going to react, which is basically the only scare tactic that this film employed. The plot was inconsistent in a subtle way (which is good for those who want to watch it for the thrills and not the meaning). The dialogue could have definitely been improved (the dialogue always gave away whatever thrill was coming up, so if anything it was destructive). The content and themes were half baked (something along the lines of following your instincts over logic, I gather), and there was absolutely no psychological depth in the film whatsoever (only psychological terms), which reflects very poorly on the film seeing that it is a psychological thriller (supposedly, anyway). The acting would have been superb if the film was a drama, but it wasn't appropriate for a horror film. I must say that I'm surprised Halle Berry didn't lose her voice after all that screaming rubbish she pulled off, but besides that she played a convincing role. The film is basically a piece of trash with pretty wrapping paper and a ribbon attached to it.

05/20/2004 | I didn't like this film. Instead of being shocked I was rolling my eyes in sheer boredom and looking at my watch as the minutes slowly ticked by at what can only be described as a poor cinematic lukewarm attempt at a thriller. Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jnr saved this film from spiraling into complete oblivion. Although I do like and respect Halle Berry a lot I could only laugh at her attempts to look scared, she just simply didn't convince me that what was happening to and around her was even remotely real. There were some good ideas from the story, but I failed to see any of this blossom into what could have potentially and easily been the best thriller of the year.

04/27/2004 | I quite liked this film, granted it wasnt as good as it was made out to be in the trailers, but i still thought it was pretty good. People say its similair to the ring? bt iv not watched that so i dont know. I think it was quite a good flim which was more jumpy than scary.

04/06/2004 | I thought I was the only one on here that thought that the ghost in Gothika was almost identical to the one in The Ring. I can only blame myself for thinking that Halle Berry could possibly star in a half decent horror film.

01/05/2004 | I liked this movie a lot better when it was called The Ring. Halle Berry did a great job with the material she was given, but I just feel that this is a rehashed story that had less shock value than was intended. Still, though, not a bad movie.
