What does one do about rating a song like "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? The song is undeniably memorable, and everyone instantly recognizes the tune, marking the waning years of 80's New Wave. In fact, the title has become part of the common lexicon. Moreover, there have been few a capella singles to get much airplay. All of these factors point to a great one hit wonder; however, most either love it or hate it (not much middle ground). For the record "Don't Worry, Be Happy" charted for 13 weeks in 1988, spending 2 of those weeks at #1. VH1 ranked the song at #46 on its list of the greatest one hit wonders.

Banal, yuppified silliness.

A great song with little music, but is still great. It also has an upbeat message that more people should follow!

Blender magaine rated it one of the 5 worst rock songs of all time. It grated on my nerves after hearing it 5 times every hour in 1988. I can only take A Capella if I'm listening to the Star Spangeled Banner. The lyrics are suicidally depressing. It also seemed to me when that song came out, the new wave era was dying out. Don't Worry, Be Happy was the clarion call of the eventual apocalypse of music (as witnessed in the MTV Super Bowl Halftime Malfunction Show). The video to that ong stunk royally (who was the goofy bald dude???).

I have already rated this song once or twice, but I will say that it still sucks and I pray I never have to listen to it again.

Good at first, but overplayed.

I'll sing it when I'm drunk. Lovebly stupid.

A little obnoxious, but I didn't have to deal with the excessive radio play when it was popular. I find Bobby McFerrin to be a very impressive musician regardless--I don't imagine it's an easy task to layer voice over voice in perfect time and still have fun with it. Check out his versions of Blackbird and the 23rd Psalm.
