I am a 17 year old girl with very little acne. However, i do work in skin care, the Clinique counter, so those 2 or 3 pimples i always have can ruin my credibility with my customers. When i was younger, my acne was much much worse. I used to have cystic acne, so my doctor prescribed me Retin-A. This didn't work at all so i got off any acne treatment for about 2 years. My skin finally cleared up, but i still have those 2 or 3 wandering pimples. My dermatologist recommended Differin along with clindamycin. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and i have seen results. Although my skin does get dry, i moisturize and exfoliate with a mild physical exfoliator every day. I am really happy with this. My doctor said my acne was going to get worse before it gets better because differin attacks the pimples that haven't popped up yet. Ive seen some increase in the amount of pimples i have, but i know i have to be patient and just wait a few months to have beautiful, clear skin.

I have been using Differin Gel for almost 4 weeks. I have moderate acne, but the gel has been making it worse. My face is red on some parts and my acne is getting worse and my self-esteem keeps decreasing. I am aware that it could take months to see the results. That is why I do not plan to stop using it because I know that I will have clear skin in the end.

Okay readers, here's the truth about Differin Gel. As soon as I was prescribed this medication for my moderate adult acne, I headed to this website and was scared off by all of the negative reviews. Many people say that their skin just got worse, and dry, and red. But as my dermatologist ALREADY told me, you absolutly have to stick with it for at least 2 months. TRUST me on this one. If you look at the majority of negative reviews, these people stopped after a few weeks of usage. The first month is a little rough. My acne turned from moderate to bad, and my sensitive skin was dry and red. I even had to coat my eyelids and nose area with a little vaseline at night because of dryness. But I'm on my second month, my skin has gotten so much better. Better yet, I don't have dryness or redness anymore. Retinoids have also proven to be some of the best anti-aging regimens out there. And reviewers, please write reviews after you've tried the product for longer than a week. Otherwise you'll people away from a great product.

I was prescribed Differen gel about 4 weeks ago, and so far so good. I had moderate acne before (a few pimples on each cheek), and now my skin is smooth. Differen does make your skin drier, so make sure you use a greater amount of moisturizer in the morning and at night. I am just trying to work on the dark spots that previous pimples have left on my cheeks (even though I've never been one to pop pimples, for some reason I still get black heads). I just hope for continued improvement.

I recommend this product. It takea a while to trest your acne, but chnaces are, you wont have any in about 3 months, everyones skin is different, so it may take sooner for some. im 15 and i have very little to no acne, thanks to this product. but i MUST say, when using this product, DO NOT GO INTO THE SUN WITHOUT ANY SUNSCREEN OR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING!! NOT ONLY WILL YOU GET SEVERE SUNBURN, BUT NASTY NASTY PAINFUL BLISTERS WILL APPEAR IN THE MOST SENSIVE, IF NOT ALL PARTS OF YOUR FACE! i made that mistake when i went to the beach, and it onl affected my cheeks...its not pretty and it feels so gross!!! SO IF YOU USE DIFFEREN, MAKE SURE THAT YOU DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I DID AND READ ALL OF THE INSTRUSTIONS AND WARNINGS!!! <3

I am 16 years old and i would say i have little to no acne. I been using differin for about a weeks time and i see no improvements. Actually i belive my skin is getting worse, the only problem is if i stop using it would my skin become worse than it already is, even though i been only been using it in such little time?

I AM 20 AND I HAVE SEVERE ACNE. IT IS HURTFULLY AND PAINFUL FOR ME TO HAVE SUCH BAD ANCE BECAUSE ALL MY FRIENDS AND MY BOYFRIEND HAS WONDERFUL CLEAR SKIN. My skin docor recommended differin and clindoxyl gel. Yesterday was my first time using differin but after reading all of these review i am starting to regret purchasing differin. I paid $83.00 for differin so it was a bit costly. I will try it out for a month and hopefully it works

I would recommend this product to those who have fairly significant acne. I have honestly since high school always had pretty bad, acne prone skin. I've tried all kinds of creams and even proactive, which just wasn't effective for me. I've been on just differin gel, no other medications for about 4 or 5 months and it really is effective for my skin. At first, it does appear as though your skin is getting worse, but in roughly 3-4 weeks I saw noticeable improvements. I have the kind of oily, acne prone skin that will probably never be completely perfect because of genetics, but before differin, my skin was at about a 9 on the scale of bothering me, now it's at maybe a 2, if that, and so it really improved my condition greatly, I never used to go anywhere without makeup, but I can because my skin is so improved. Also, there are little things you can do everyday which help your skin out, I personally do this everyday- make sure to use a fresh, clean pillowcase every night, use a clean face towel and change it everyday (don't let people wipe their hands on it), use only oil-free makeup, moisturizers, cleansers, and try to use oil-free hair products too. If your skin is very sensitive, try washing towels and such with a fragrance-free detergent (for the same price as the others). I know this is long, but making these changes and sticking to it everyday DRAMATICALLY improved my skin, and if you try to eliminate all the chances of where your skin could be getting oily from, you will be saving the health of your skin trust me!! My skin routine is 2-3 times a day cleanse with clearasil for sensitive skin, then at night use differin. My skin tends to be oily so I usually skip the moisturizer. Hope this helps!!

I am always breaking out. My skin doctor just prescribed me differen and Cephalexin so hopefully that'll help me out. I'm an extremely outgoing girl, but acne does tend to damage my confidence. I've been with my boyfriend over two years, and he's never seen me without makeup on. *fingers crossed* I really hope this clears things up!

Does the Differin Gel make the white heads and black heads dissapear? Or does it make it easier to squeeze out the clogged pores? My doctor said it would work in a few months. But he did'nt say would would happen in two months?
asdfasdfasdfqw er 02/18/2007
The creators of Differin say themselves that the acne will worsen at first. You have to use this gel continuously, and usually after 2 months your skin will start to get better. The people who used it for a week and gave it a one star rating should have read the information sheet first.

I am 36 years old, and for most of my adult life I suffered from severe cystic acne. There were peiords that it inexplicably cleared up, but it invariably returned, worse than ever. Severe acne is a life-altering issue, especially in our culture, which places such a high value on physical apperance. Beginning in my teen years, I tried regimen after regimen, including both over the counter and prescripton medications. When I turned 30, and my acne was worse than ever, I tried ProActiv. It worked beautifully, just as the advertising claims, but only only for about seven months. Then my acne returned. I quit ProActiv, and began treatment by a dermatologist. The first regimen prescribed me was doxycycline (oral antibiotics) and Differin. I was well informed of the exacerbation period which seems to draw the ire of Differin users, so I was very patient. Still, my acne seemed to worsen more and more. I asked if there were anything more I could do, and my doctor doubled my doseage of doxycycline. Even then i saw little or no improvement. At my wits end, I decided to try some remaining ProActiv along with my prescription regimen and the results blew me away! Now I highlly reccomend Differin, but NOT as a stand-alone product, only as a supplemental product. In that capacity, it functions beautifully, allowing other medication to work more effectively and more efficiently. After some adjusting, I began taking the doxycycline just once per day, along with Differin in the PM, Duac twice per day and Metro Cream twice per day. I still use the ProActiv, but only the cleanser (They allow you to order just three bottles of the cleanser, instead of the medication and toner). I use Witch Hazel instead of toner. It's refreshing and is wonderful for your skin. Admittedly, this is a strong and costly regimen, but I have not had a single zit in years! It changed my life! I get many, many compliments on my skin. If people only knew! So, as a stand-alone product, Differin isn't very good. But combined with another medication (Duac for me) it has made all the difference.

I tired differin Gel for 6 weeks and it did nothing but irritate my skin. Read The Acne Cure by Dr, Dubrow!!! get it now and stop wasting your time with dermatologists and prescriptions!!! It's simple and it has already really cleared up my acne in a week so far! and i stopped using the differin!

I am a teen with severe acne and I have tried everything to get rid of it. I still have yet to find a product that keep my skin clear for a long period of time. My last dermatologist had me try differin a first time and all it did was make my acne deeper and more painful. Then for some reason he had me use it again.. which just made it even more worse. Now my new dermatologist gave me it again even though i told her that it hadn't worked for me. After 1 or 2 days my face had become worse and as i knew they would, the pimples were more severe and painful. I do NOT recommend Differin to anyone. It will not help your face, it will cause it to get worse.
ellie10 07/17/2006
differin worked just fine for my zits( which werent bad at all anyway) but it made my face so RED! I got sunburnt so easily. So Ive decided to not use it anymore and my face is not near as red as it was. I just wash my face now with St. Ives and it seems to be working much better.
willow569 06/27/2006
I seem to have had a similar reaction as others whose acne was fairly minimal/mild when starting differin. I had some blocked pores on my forehead and nose and no active acne on my chin except a few under-skin bumps. Well, the differin worked ok on my forehead and nose, but it absolutely killed my chin! I only was able to stay on it 6 wks, but things kept getting progressively worse and the spots it was bringing up were not clearing at all. I truly regret ever using this stuff on my chin. My skin always felt irritated. Now I have red marks and bumps on my chin that I have to figure out how to clear up. Update: I stopped using the Differin on my forehead too. It was giving my skin an odd bumpy texture. After changing my regimen to one that includes glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and mandelic acid, my skin has improved. I really hated the Differin!!!

I'm not a fan of this stuff, i'm adding my first post on my acne. I cleared my face once using antibiotics and retina-A, it took several months and worked pretty good. I broke out when i got off the stuff so i tried accutane, that medication worked over a six month period, but had a lot of side effects. Then i broke out again, i was prescribed adoxa and differin, after about four months i kicked that medication aside. Differin doesn't work for me, i've noticed that i wake up with white heads when i put it on at night, it may be too greasy for my face. I've read a lot of good reviews on benzaclin and i'm giving it a try right now. I think this medication might be the best from what i've tried.

This is my second time on the differin gel. I have tried the differin cream during winter months to decrease dryness, and they both work equally as well. My dermatologist prescribed Finacea (for roseacea and mild to moderate acne) along with it. Finacea in morning and differin in evening. It is working great. The Finacea is itchy at first and causes a tingle on my skin, but gets better with time. If you have oily skin you will like finacea, it dries the oil up a bit. It also helps the acne scars and scabs heal faster. The differin is the key though. It is what stops the acne. It does take about(in my experience) 6 weeks well and up to 6 months to get the full effect. I stopped using differin for awhile and was fine, but went off of the birth control pill and my skin exploded. These creams are not a 'cure' for the long haul, but keep using it and it will help! Also, I have noticed when on these creams and gels do not squeeze! Your skin is vulnerable and you will only cause a big ole scab if you do.
Differin_User 01/10/2006
I ahve been using Differin (0.1% Adapalene) for about 6 months, (3 45g Tubes) on my shoulders and upper back. I have not seen any improvments except for in the morning the acne (or backne as some say) appears to be less red. Otherwise, they are all still on my back and shoulders, and this creme has not done anything as of these 6 months. I also dont understand why you are informed not to put this creme under the angles of your nose. I would like to do so, but have not yet because of medical instructions.

I don't consider myself to have very bad acne. I have small blackheads on my nose, chin, and the space between my eyebrows (essentially in my "T-zone") and the occasional "pimple" on my forehead and cheeks. The "pimples" never come to the surface though... just small bumps that come and then eventially go away on their own without breaking the skin. I know I don't have terrible skin, but I knew it could probably be better- less blackheads and getting rid of those pesky little bumps- so I went to a dermatologist. She prescribed Differin Cream (since I tend to have sensitive skin) and I used it for 2 weeks straight. It was terrible! My skin broke out in full-fledge acne like I'd never seen before! Big red zits that were terribly painful- and to top it off the Differin was drying out my skin and making it terribly raw! My dermatologist told me that my skin could potentially get worse before it got better, but I didn't expect it to be this bad! I stuck with it for 2 weeks, even though much to my dismay I was waking up every morning with another big zit. Finally I got fed up and stopped. Now I'm trying to return my skin to what it was before! My new over-the-counter solution seems to be much better: CLEAN&CLEAR Morning Burst Cleanser in the AM, followed by a once-over of Witch Hazel on one of those throw-away astringent pads, followed by a TINY dot of CLEAN&CLEAR Persa-gel 10 on any tiny pimples, let that dry, then follow with CLEAN&CLEAR Morning Glow Moisturizer and SPF 15. It's oil-free, so it doesn't make me breakout or get more blackheads. Then at night I use CLEAN&CLEAR Blackhead Clearing Scrub followed by Witch Hazel and the little dots of Persa-gel 10 plus the moisturizer again. (I know it says MORNING on it, but the Persa-gel can be drying, so I use it at night too.) The witch-hazel makes the redness of all the big zits that the Differin gave me fade, and the Persa-gel is kind of like an emergency-treatment right now. Hopefully as soon as this round of zits clears up, I won't have to use the persa-gel anymore. I think Differin may only be really beneficial if you have more complicated acne. If you have just so-so skin, my recommendation is to just find a good over-the-counter regimen and stick to it. I hope if you are using Differin, you are having a much better experience with it!

I had pretty limited acne, on average 3 or 4 pimples, however, i was prescirbed diffin gel in addition to duac. My skin got much much worse, however i knew this was a side effect. my dermatologist was very surprised at my next visit and upped the dossage. my skin became even worse, i couldn't go in the sun, my face was red, peeling, and raw. The second i went of diffin, my skin cleared up and am now just on a simple pill. Basically i started out almost perfect skin, and now have a face full of scars. I'm sure it works for some people, ive heard great things about it, but be careful, the consequences of bad reaction are not great.
shadesofpurple 09/23/2005
I have been using Differin Gel at night along with another product in the AM prescribed by a dermatologist who presents herself as a complete scatter-brain. I was desperate enough to give it a chance anyway and it's been about 4 months with no visible improvements. I don't even have severe acne! I have some blackheads on my nose and under-eye area with more pimple scarring than actual pimples, yet it's not getting any better.. It got worse in the beginning with cystic acne and now it's just the same.. Should I still continue using this? I know I have to be patient, but after 4 months. wouldn't there be some sign if there is ever going to be? On the brighter side, it hasnt ever made my skin peel and form scabs, so after reading those reviews, i'll give this an OK rating.
prcunningham 09/20/2005
You have to be patient, (and I'm not), but after 2 months of differin, my chin has gone from being completely broken out to nothing but a few pink scars that are still healing. I used in conjunction with duac (duac in a.m., differin in p.m.), but I know it was the differin that made the difference.

Please help! I have mild acne which is getting worse due to getting off of birth control pills 6 months ago. I was prescribed minocycline with differin. I have not used minocycline as I have heard good things about it however most people have mentioned that the minute they got off of it acne came back even worse and on top of that there is potential liver damage. I have been using only differin for 5 days but due to my upcoming wedding in 6 months I am in a panic as I am scared of the initial breakout considering a lot of folks have mentioned that their acne got worse which is understandable and what it says on the instructions however people have also mentioned that it never got better. Its half and half people have mentioned good things about it and then the persons with mild acne got even worse and never got better. I am on a time contraint can anyone help before my wedding approaches? I even got vitamins such as pantothenic acid and acidophilus.
nattas 09/09/2005
the doc sed that it is used to kill and disinfect the bacteria on the skin. i apply this gel every night after a showa along with minocycline twice a day. i think wat it is ment to do is dry the face to allow scabs to form. once the scabs form, the area becomes dry and allows the scab to fall off. if u pick it to early, u get scarring. the product is ok, but can really dry out the skin. the best thing u can do is only apply it to areas with pimples and big blackheads, NOT ANYWHERE UNAFFECTED BY ACNE.
royphil345 02/14/2005
The only bad thing about this product is that it doesn't work for everyone. It did work for me and I couldn't be happier. Had acne all my life, actually got worse in my 30s. Only hard part now is to remember to keep using the Differin Gel without having any skin problems to remind me. It did take about a month to really start working, so give it a chance.
ihatedifferin 10/19/2004
I have been using Differin for about 4 months now, and my skin looks worse than it ever did. I went on the product because I had a lot of clogged pores on my forehead/chin area. Now my face is dry, scaly, irratated, RED, and there are scabs all over...everything horrible you could possibly imagine. I am going to stop using it, but I am really afraid of what will happen then. I guess it cant be any worse though. I absolutely HATE this product. It has made my life hell.
pinkbunny 06/22/2004
This stuff works pretty well, although for the first couple of weeks my skin was red and scaly and just all-around unappealing. Bonus: because I looked so sunburnt, you couldn't see the spots on my face. I also took it with nuclear-grade antibiotics from my derm so that probably helped. i still use this by itself though, and my skin gets really dry sometimes. i reccomend using cetaphil wash and cetaphil cream moisturizer (the moisturizer comes in a big vat that looks like a body lotion, but it won't make you break out). oddly enough, if you skip it for a night to let your dry skin have a break, it gets even more dry. so don't skip days, just slather on a good moisturizer all the time.

i've been using the differein gel for about 1 year, in my opinion it works wonderful, evens skin tone and dramatically lessens breakouts. what JAIDEN said was true though, the minute you stop using it, the acne comes back.
Jaiden 04/14/2004
I have been using the gel now continuously for 4 weeks and am still in the beginning stages. I previously used it for a longer period and found it to be very good but without continued use the acne came back. My advice would be to try not to squeeze when starting on this! Allow time for the skin to heal and the gel to do It's job! Also do not use the same finger {without washing it with soap} to apply eye cream after putting the differin on. I did this and the eye area peeled and was red and terribly sensitive and painful and took 2 weeks to clear up!!!

I am a 33 year old femal who never had problems with acnes as teenager. Go figure now this would happen. I tried Retinol-A--It was entirely too harsh. My Dr. prescribed Differin Gel and it's wonderful. No itching, redness or dryness.

I had been taking this med for a few years with no improvements. It only made my face dry!

Im 23 with moderate acne which has been very hard to control. Differin Gel/Cream is the first product in many that has, for the first time, shown to control about 80% of my acne. However there is a stubborn 10% that is still lingering. I've been on the product for about 2 months. It's true when the packaging says that your acne may/will get worse while using this product. In a sense it makes your skin purge a lot of "unseen" acne to the top of your skin. But it mostly subsided when I continued to use the Differin consistantly. I notice that my pores are very refined and tiny, the parts of my skin that are healthy look incredibly toned. As for side effects, I notice a slight peeling, and in places I DIDNT put the differin, it peeled as well. Such as ear lobes, neck, and under eye area. This became pretty sensitive, but also subsided with continued use. I also have a slight rosy complextion, which I dont care for, but Im sure will go away when I stop using Differin. I've used a little less then half of the tube and I figure by the time I use all of it, Im hopeful my acne will have cleared 100%. I've pretty much used this product on its own considering I got tired of popping Tetracycline pills. However, I feel I will get back on them soon to possibly help the healing of my skin. Also, be sure to use a mild soap as directed. This product requires patience to use.
spamgela 08/01/2003
I used Differin Gel for about 3 years it made my pores minimize. As a teenager with moderate acne I would recomend it to others
