He/she doesn't offer much as a video game character. Even in Yellow all he/she does is frown at you and zap people. In the anime series, however, he/she actually has a personality, so it's a completely different matter.

I think Mewtwo is a much more formidable and colorful character. He's ominous and you only get one shot at catching him. He's the hardest to catch and the most powerful, that's got to count for something. Pikachu ont he other hand is weak, he's not even an evolved form. You can't just bank on cuteness in a battle, you've got ot have power to back you up. This is the main reason I hate the TV show. They show sorry pokemon beating pokemon that should be wiping the floor with the weak pokemon. I mean really who would go into battle a Scyther with a Bulbasaur and expect to win? No one who has any sense. It's ridiculous. But I digress, Pikachu may be cute, but he just isn't my kind of pokemon, give me Mewtwo or Scyther any day.

Pikachu's character is stymied by his limited vocabulary, all he can say is variations of his own name.
