I have been on this drug for maybe two years now. My moods are stable but the side effects are not too pleasant, such as no sex drive, sweatiness, stuff like that. This is one of those drugs that must be taken daily without exception - my body lets me know when I have forgotten a dose. The swirling patterns behind my eyelids and lethargy and 'brain zaps' send me right for the prescription bottle. It beats welbutrin, though.

I only gave effexor 4 stars because I do know it is a hard drug to wean off of but there is a way to do it very very gradually...like a year if possible...by taking out a grain a day or so from the capsule. As for my experience, it was the ONLY antidepressent that has worked for me. I have bipolar and take effexor with Lamictal--perfect combination for me.I still take it and so does my 14 year old brother...he takes it with the mood stabilizer, Abilify...that combination has helped him with his mood and he no longer lashes out at the family. Effexor can also make you sweat even when you aren't doing anything...but it's a small price to pay since it works for me.

I have been taking Effexor for almost 2 1/2 years and I almost wish I never started. My review is mixed because while it has and continues to help me immensely with my mood unlike any other medication I have tried, the withdrawls are absolutely horrible. If I even miss a dose by accident, within 4 hours I feel lightheaded, have terrible vertigo, feel weak and nauseated and dizzy. Just the simple act of turning my head ever so slightly causes the room to spin out of control (I am NOT exaggerating). I want to wean off but I fear not only the unstable moods and anxiety returning, but I fear the awful withdrawl I know I will have as well. Just to let you know, the withdrawl lasts for about 2 weeks - possibly longer depending how sensitive you are to the drug.

My 15 year old son had horrible withdrawal problems that prevented him from going to school for a week or two. This problem was made worse by the fact that the dr. had not warned my son or me and wife about the withdrawal. CfromCC

Don't take it!!! It causes horrible, horrible withdrawals even when slowly weaning off of this drug. It is evil.
