ItemImageBiodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils or recycled restaurant greases. Biodiesel is safe, biodegradable, and reduces serious air pollutants such as particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and air toxics. Blends of 20% biodiesel with 80% petroleum diesel (B20) can be used in unmodified diesel engines, or biodiesel can be used in its pure form (B100), but may require certain engine modifications to avoid maintenance and performance p

I have the same basic opinion on biodiesel as I do on ethanol, just switch the crop in question from corn to soybeans. So if the price of soybeans goes up due to increased biodiesel production, I am in favor of it.

It's possible for a handful of hippies to make a stink (literally) by running biodiesel cars. Unless 99% of Americans give up driving, however, it's not a viable substitute for gasoline.

This is the fuel of the future if we want to get away from Arab oil. If there is one thing America excels at it is creating used cooking oil. Biodiesel burns clean and is fairly inexpensive to refine. Places like New York and L.A. might end up smelling like fries all the time but it is probably better then what they smell like now.

I have done some reading on this and it looks very very promising. It is made from renewable sources (like soya) and can be combined with petroleum diesel and used in most regular diesel engines with little or no modifications. It is cleaner and emits less carcinogens than regular petroleum-based fuel. This may be the way forward. It is not that easy to get at the pump, though although it is more readily available in some states (such as Minnesota) than in others (like Arizona).

Great alternative like methanol. Anything to reduce the draw on our natural resources. Not that renewable sources don't have their own suttle draw on the environment and natural resources, but certainly don't have the obvious, like using up the last of the earth's oil reserves.

evidently word hasn't gotten around. I make and run my own biodiesel. I use old cooking oil from local resturants and schools. I costs me about 60 cents a gallon to produce. I run it 50-50. There are entire sites and groups doing the same thing.

Diesel shouldn't be an alternative fuel. Diesel on vehicles would reduce gas mileage, look at the VW Golf vs. any other comapct. Diesel engines would only be good in full size trucks or SUV's.

Nope not even close right along with Methanol. The amount of organic material required to support this infrastructure is way too much to maintain present level of economic activity.
