It's a pretty good server OS, but still mainly for geeks. Just because it's stable and secure, that doesn't put it above a decently stable and pretty secure OS with much more software availability and a higher ease of use.

Good for soem server applications, btu with teh recent security holes released, its not very good chioce for servers. Linux is easier to hack into. Has Ok options but Windows Server 2003 has even more now. I checked out the things it could do at Microsoft TouchPoint and TS2 conferences and It blew me away!! If your a serious business looking for tools tog et the job done and want solid intergration and seemless office and web applicaions, get windows server 2003! Linux is really single purpose right now and does not ahve as rich server applications as windows server 2003.. it may be ok for hosting websites on... btu does it really do good from a business perspective?? does it have rich apps that can benifit your business.... ?? does it have volume shadow copy??? no! can you have a remote workplace? yah but with third party VNC based clients that are very insecure.. Id rather VPN! also can you access your exhcange based mail and have the same outlook like functionality?? nope. you are forced to configure a mail client that uses sendmail... a veyr hard to manage mail system that is only a reader and not a real-time business collaboration applicaion.. Evoulution is jsut an email reader thats a stripped down outlook express.... I havent seen any real time collaborations or business contact managers. I hanvet seen any capabilities for being a streaming media server. I havent seen the richness that most businesses want to get thier job done.... and why dont they bundle more business apps with teh server...?? why do they include like 4 txt based editors and all this other junk thats in redhat that no one uses... yah lieke we all use a mouse speedometer and all these crazy play toys no one uses only if thye want to ply around and they cant get any good games to work on linux ether. but this is from a server standpoint. I havent even gotten this to talk to windows clients. I cant even make it a dial in server and vpn into it. I would have to get a proxy to have linux communicate with windows clients. Also package management is a pain and there is not centrallized control of teh server. that means you got like 5+ management apps open and you cant see the server stsu at-a-glance and you ahve to keep track of your settings in all these apps and nothing is standardized so its not easy to support and train people, you are use to one distro's server managemnet, and you move to another company.. bam! learning the server all over again... this does add to a belive it or not higher TCO. and since nothing is standardized you gotta hunt all over the web for support, and what if one of the applicaions fails that you depend on, and the author of the program decides to stop teh project! You're doomed! Thats the problem with these mom-and-pop applications... you are not guaranteed to get updates and you are forced to look all over agian for another mgmgt app.... or pay teh 20,000+ for apps from the likes of computer associates and them not being guarnteed to work ether! so there you have it the ins and outs of linux vs windows server!
