My son and I had a lot of fun with kites and rockets. We were always improvising and trying to push the limits of both. With rockets, we would modify them and add extra engines, the intention being to try to get them to soar out of sight.
One day, we took one of our larger kites and attached it to over 12,000 feet of string. It took some time, but we let it all out. We could only see the kite through binoculars. Then, mom called us for dinner. OOOPS! We worked furiously with a Black and Decker drill with a long bit, trying to bring it back in. Between realizing that this could take hours and the fact that this was too much of a load on the drill, we cut the string and let 'er go.
Within 24 hours, there were hundreds of reports of UFO sightings over Central Florida...

I only did this about one or two times when I was around 10 but I remember it with fondness. After you work to put the kite together and then watch it going higher and higher you almost feel as though you're up there with it. It's a really magical feeling. I highly recommend it!
