 | JonTheMan (27) 11/28/2003 | The difference between Akira and GitS (besides the running time GiTS is roughly half as long) is that Akira will leave you guessing but GiTS will be only too glad to explain. The annoying element of the dubbed version of this show is that the characters voices are far too soft. I'd advise watching the Japanese version. Philosophy, Theology, evolution, integral questions about sentience etc are all present and all thoroughly drawn out as the characters go on thier mission against the puppet master. Be prepared for some explosive visuals and an information overload. Ghost in the Shell hits you like a shotgun burst, theres just SO MUCH detail and symbolism too it being thrown at you in a very short space of time your brain will be jumping through hoops. Sadly though Mamuri Oshii (One of my favourite directors he directed the brilliant Patlabor: First movie) has the monumental task of compressing volumes of the Masamume Shirou manga into a movie and the characters (A sympathetic joker, A dynamic cold hearted lesbian, A traditional family man etc) are not fully fleshed out. Nonetheless this movie is a colaboration between my favourite manga-ka and my favourite anime director and the results are stunning. Even the Wachowski brothers (Matrix) are left in awe.
