Grumpy is putting up a wall so he won't be hurt. I think alot of old people who are ornery like that have used the grumpiness as a defense mechanism to protect themselves. But if you can breakthrough that barrier and soften Grumpy up a little you would find an interesting, loyal and protective dwarf.
