A freak at the position, something like having Jim Brown or Earl Campbell play quarterback.
Didn't seem to have the head for the position, and ultimately went to the dogs.

Update: Michael Vick's career record as a starting quarterback is 38-28-1, which is pretty good for a guy leading a mediocre franchise. However, staying on the field is an important part of rating a player, and Vick has taken himself out of the league by age 26. In my previous posting here from 2003 I stated, "I just don't see how Vick won't succeed in the NFL." I guess I must have been blind not to see that becoming a felon could keep him from succeeding.
12/2/2003 - **** Vick gets a 4 from me based upon his talent alone. He is still young and has many years ahead of him to see how well of a quarterback he becomes. I just don't see how Vick won't succeed in the NFL.

A very gifted athlete and the best rushing QB ever. A great college player, but the running QB does not fair well in the big leagues. He had/has a strong arm, but often misused it.
-2 stars for poor decision making on and off the field.

People's exhibit A for having all the talent that nature and evolution could possibly provide. . .then mix in a brain that can't read defenses, books or make anything resembling proper decisions out of instinct, experience, or luck. Use him to teach your kids the problems of 'no brains/all talent' because there's no better example. Close your eyes and imagine Vick's career with a 10 point IQ jump and some (any) ability to make good decisions 50% of the time. . .just imagine the possibilities. . .

Aha, so numbah was right to suspect him. His potential was big time due to his ability with his legs, but bad reads kill. To top it off, he goes and gets his ass tossed in jail. Will any team take a chance on him? I wouldn't, and at this point his legacy is one of too much downside and not enough upside.

I doubt that Vick will ever play in the NFL. What team would want to take a risk on him and invoke the wrath of the public? And besides, he isn't all that talented of a QB. Having a mobile QB is good to have, but not a scrambling QB like Vick. Look at the quarterbacks for the four teams that are currently in the playoffs. Frankly, I don't see Manning, Brady, Rivers or Favre winning the 40 yard dash. Everyone used to say that Vick was going to revolutionize the QB position forever, and every team needed to have a scrambling QB to remain competitive. So much for that! Bottom line is if you can't read defenses and use your arm to beat a team, it doesn't matter how fast you are! Vick's style of quarterbacking might work well in the high school or college level, but it doesn't work in the NFL. Defensive back and linebackers are way too fast at the professional level for it to be successful there. At that level, intangibles like intellect and leadership abilities are more important than athleticism.

he was a good RB. I really don't mind this dogfighting thing either, these damned animal rights activist or animal lovers are screwing everything up. Have a nice big steak and stop worrying about the animals rights. And dog lovers are horrible people-those filthy little beast drive me crazy.

This versatile quarterback has to play a few more seasons before he can be considered among the best in the game.

One of the worst quarterbacks in the history of the game. Vastly overrated.
yesseroo 12/12/2004
Overrated thus far in his career. Maybe he'll prove me wrong in the future.

Let's wait a few years. Just because he's exciting doesn't mean he's good.
Gehrig 06/19/2004
All-time? All he has done is sat on the bench injured.

I agree that Michael Vick is an enormous talent who, barring a career-ending injury, will have a great career and be mentioned along side the names of Montana, Elway, Bradshaw, and Staubach. I can't rate him as high as those greats right now because he has proven so little. He has only played one full season as a QB and even though it was a season worthy of MVP consideration, he still has a lot to prove to be rated as high as Montana, Elway, and Bradshaw. Let him play a few more seasons and win a couple of Super Bowls before you rate him in the same category as the all-time elites.
