There are a lot of uses for oranges, tea, cleaning, etc. The taste and smell of them however, is second to none. This would be the Fountain of Youth that Ponce de Leon was searching for. In fact, I did see an old man in my neighbourhood that was nicknamed "Orange Man" because he believes that eating 7 of them per day will make him live longer- I saw him in an obituary, and he lived to be 102.

Which came first the color or the fruit? A great asset to the culinary community with uses in almost every concievable cuisine. The juice is wonderful in a wide variety of dishes or simply enjoyed as a refreshing beverage. Try it fresh squeezed to drink. It will make all the difference in the world.

Pretty tasty, and possibly more importantly, very convenient; you don't need any tools to disassemble it, and it doesn't get messy. Also, very good in liquid form.

A little bit of a pain in the tush to get into, but once you have it peeled it's worth it.
AleashaC 09/17/2008
Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world.

Nothing is better than a ripe, juicy orange.. love 'em -- just the smell of a freshly peeled orange ... Mmmmm.. sigh

Not just a perfect fruit- it's the right size for breakfast. That rare food item that tastes good and is good for you. . .

tasty, kind of a pain to peel though... nutritious... 4 stars!
Kairho 10/08/2005
Five stars for orange juice. But for everything else the flavor is getting too common and ordinary. Then there's the yucky artificial version...
texasyankee 04/19/2005
Generally it's the california ones I prefer although my inlaws once sent me a box of florida that were high-quality and have never had an orange like that again... they were yummy but hard to come by in grocery stores, that good.

my record in one day is 7 and a half!!!

I have two orange trees, a Navel and Valencia. The Valencia makes the best Orange Juice, but they both make good eating.
dusteater 10/28/2004
Yummy, but very messy and get all over the place.
bibliophile 09/29/2004
Give me a good blood orange anyday, and it's a five. But oranges available at certain times of the year are weak on flavor.
JonTheMan 02/29/2004
Love is a lot like an orange, effort intensive to uncover, sweet and satisfying when you finally get beneath the surface and often gone all too quickly.
kolby1973 02/10/2004
Oranges are excellent. I love biting into a juicy orange that drips down your arm. However, there is nothing worse than biting into a bad orange...and Florida oranges are the best. Highly recommended...
tvtator 11/18/2003
Ok peeling an orange can be a nusiance, but the sweet, juicy taste is worth it.
snlgirl 06/23/2003
It is rare to find a truly delicious orange. They take forever to peel, and are very sticky and messy. It's just not worth the effort. I do love orange juice though.
METABABY.COM 05/07/2003
Please. Pulp is bad, mmmkay? And so is having to peel the thing. At least nanners are easy to peel.
Aurielle 03/17/2003
If it was possible, I would say 4.5 . I love oranges, but sometimes they can be dry and almost woody-tasting. When they're sweet and so juicy that you have orange juice dripping off your hands, that's when oranges are excellent!
crimson_and_cl over 02/25/2003
good, but i hate having to peel them
Jason1972 10/24/2002
I would give it 5, but I get unlucky at times when picking oranges. They're like a roll of a dice when you get them at a supermarket. You don't know if they'll be sweet, bland, or sour. The best ones in the world don't come from California or Florida but actually Australia.
benfergy 04/16/2002
People often use the phrase "comparing apples to oranges", but I disagree with it, because I will compare apples to oranges! Oranges taste better!
danmuse 09/14/2001
One of the most refreshing of all fruits. Just the vision of a fresh orange makes my mouth water. There's got to be a reason that orange juice is such a mainstay. Mighty tasty.
CastleBee 09/10/2001
Oranges can be really good or really bland and the type you’re getting can sometimes fool you. Oh, I’m not talking about you Floridians, Californians and others who grew up with them. I’m talking about the rest of us who go to the store and stand there with a question mark over our heads with visions of the last good or not so good orange we had dancing in our heads. Generally, the big, thick-skinned navel oranges are a good bet. But don’t overlook the ones that look kind of scrawny and have a few spots. These can be some of the most juicy and sweet. This is another fruit that travels well, is a good addition to fruit salad and was fun to eat as a kid by either cutting it in fourths or sticking a straw in it to suck out the juice. Of course, in 7th grade this was the fruit that had an active part in my finding out fruit abuse. I was cleaning my hall locker at the end of the year and found far in the very back, an orange I had brought for lunch who knows what part of that semester. Barely recognizable by that time it should have been renamed a “fuzzy green”.
MedgarEvers 09/10/2001
I live in Orange County, New York, and we don't even grow oranges here. I didn't always like oranges, but get yourself some navel (sp?) oranges- they're like large tangerines with more sweetness than a regular orange. And orange juice? I used to prefer apple. I love orange juice now. You sure get your potassium from these guys.
Frank15 09/10/2001
Another of the "big 3" fruits, probably just to get a popular citrus fruit in. It's certainly not the best citrus fruit out there, however. Like most fruits of this type, it has a very tangy taste, though other fruits (like pineapple) have a much better tangy taste to them. Then again, they're easier to eat than a pineapple, so you've gotta' give oranges credit for that. But as for me, personally, I'd rather peel and eat a lemon anyway!
