 | The Stridges (0) 07/22/2004 | As most of the British car manufacturers have gone up the swanny years ago, there's not a lot to comment on. However, as an example, even though BMW builds the Mini in Cowley, Oxfordshire - It is still built by the British! It's exterior style was concieved by an American working in the UK. The Interior was designed by a Brit. The engineering team was a joint Anglo/German affair based in the UK. BMW paid for it and I guess are now reaping the rewards!
There are many similar examples......Aston Martin, Land Rover, Jaguar - built in UK, owned by Americans.
Rolls-Royce, Bentley - Built in UK, owned by Germans.
These are all premium vehicles renowned for their craftsmanship. It's just a pity that the pound stays so healthy making for expensive products in the US and abroad.

 | Sundiszno (30) 05/30/2004 | The Brits don't seem to do too wel with mechanical things. The only item I can think of that was a smashing success goes back to WW II, i.e., the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine used in Spifires and Mustangs. But, when it comes to strictly cars, I think that British styling is nonexistent (they arguably have made some of the ugliest cars in automotive history); reliability, especially with electrical systems, is bad, and you have to pay through the nose for a quality product (or for the few quality products that the Brit auto industry makes). I guess the older Land Rovers are somewhat of an exception. But, overall, any car with the steering wheel on the passenger side is suspect in my book.

 | StanUzbeck (14) 01/06/2004 | The Bentley and the Rolls Royce are the two best car models ever produced in the history of automotive engineering. They are practically perfect in every way. Of course, they cost several years' salary for most of us, and as such will remain the privilege of the wealthy. They also aren't British companies anymore, but are still superb cars.

 | BIGBABY (10) 01/03/2004 | Not realy much left. Jaguar is owned and designed by Ford. The Mini Cooper is all BMW. I know that Bentley and Rolls-Royce are owned by other companies as well, one of them being Volkswagen. And its a good thing they've all been bought out, too, cause all of them were showing aged designs ans horrible reliability.
