Greatly underrated. Produces magnificent guitar solos, has a tone to die for, and bends and vibratos those strings like nobody else.
Atupa 01/24/2007
He's the best.
JeetKuneDo 01/14/2007
Great sound, great note choices. Not a virtuoso, but he sounds great.
atash 01/11/2007
David Gilmour is the best of the best of the best guitarist of all time, I believe it.
GreggOrange 01/10/2007
Oh, those beautiful, searing melodic solos....such dynamicism! Such phrasing....absolutely the best guitarist in rock, hands down. No one can even compare to Gilmour with his highly crafted, tasty chops. Now, can I interest you in some time share property? Stink Floyd SUCKS! Everything they have ever done SUCKS! If you like this band then you probably like elevator music and Phenobarbitol as well. They are one of the most pretentious, condescending, overrated and overblown acts in the history of modern music and their entire catalogue of music is self-indulgent crap for people that want to escape into a silly fantasy land of aimless depressing introspection. BLLLEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!!!
louiethe20th 01/09/2007
His solo in "Mother" was awesome!
Chrisrianna 01/07/2007
A much more talented player then Hendrix or Clapton and some of the greatest solos in rock history.
Echoes 12/23/2006
No one else comes close, thats why he is known as God's guitarist
wigscott 12/11/2006
David Gilmour's lead work is awesome, you can almost sing along with them, very emotive. Of course his TONE was always great, his use of Leslie rotating speakers are central to it. To me David was always the positive light in Floyd while Roger went the other way. Both wrote amazing songs. My favs include COMFORTABLY NUMB, TIME, HAVE A CIGAR, PIGS, lots of DIVISION BELL stuff.
meggsknows 10/16/2006
The most colorless guitarist ever. He even makes Pete Townshend look good.
crazyd 10/16/2006
David Gimour is the most lyrical player ever. you tell the tone deaf non musicians as they are the ones who would have something negative to say about him.
haveacigar 08/15/2006
David Gilmour is the greatest guitar player in the history of mankind. He is underrated, unappreciated, and overlooked. Fools. No man comes close to this titan of guitar. His solos are music from God. Listen to him, and see what I mean. Greatest Song- Comfortably Numb
Currie 06/29/2006
Gilmour, by his own admission is not a "fast guitarist", which is often associated with being a great guitarist. What makes Gilmour great is that he has a unique and timeless sound that no other has come close to matching. Even as Roger Waters tours, with guitar greats like Snowy White, they can't reproduce Gilmour spacy sound. Moreover, and if nothing else, the mind behind such guitar solos as Time, Comfortably Numb and High Hopes, deserves to be in the top 10.
leftfinger 06/09/2006
The older I get, the more I appreciate David Gilmore. Not flashy, just tasty.
tossa 03/25/2006
BORING!!!!!!!!!
brandtelope 03/22/2006
Not much to say. He's OK.
Rockon64 03/22/2006
Pink Floyd is a great band! I really like Gilmour's playing, but the category is BEST guitarist, and he's not even close.
cak0130 03/09/2006
David Gilmour NEEDS to be in the top 10 if not the top 5. Comfortably Numb, Echoes, Time, Wish you were here, Money, and other songs have some of the best guitar solos ive ever heard!!!! Its a shame he's not rated higher.
sixstrings 02/24/2006
David Gilmour is a Rock God....
stevehowedammi t 02/24/2006
Great guitarist. One of the top 50
Gromit 02/04/2006
Gilmour is TIMELESS! Phenomenal feel, tone, emotion, and chops. This guy can make one single note or bend send a chill up your spine! One of the all-time BEST rock guitar gods, period.
eclipse 01/01/2006
just want to say david gilmour is the guitar god!
wormboy2000 12/15/2005
Most expressive player ever. period
Junkman 10/24/2005
If the man upstairs said I could play guitar like only one person, there would be no hesitation, I would pick David Gilmour. His unique style strikes me as hauntingly beautiful. Seeing him on Fender's anniversary concert broadcast I could see he was in a place where it was just him, his guitar and the music they were creating together. Awesome.
Capt.Cock 09/24/2005
good band...hell no is he a rock god
franman204 09/11/2005
GREATES GUITAR PLAYER WHO WALKED ON EARTH! HIS SOLOS ARENT JUST PLAYED NOTES, HIS SOLOS LIVES AND BREATHES< THEYRE ALIVE AND HAS EMOTIONS, SOME MAY SAY TECHNIQUE IS KEY< BUT WHATS BETTER, A ROBOT, OR A LIVING HUMAN BEING? THIS MAKES DAVID GILMOUR BETTER THEN VAI, ANGUS YOUNG,PAGE,VAN HALEN(he didnt invented tappin, nor made it better, even robby krieger can trap better then him), ZAPPA,ALL THOSE SHREDDERS WITH NO EXPRESSION.(dont get me wrong, vai zappa and page ae awsome, cept for angus young and van halen, cocky assholes)
sfdksfgslkdfh 09/09/2005
gilmour is the most amazing guitarist i have ever heard. his solo in comfortably numb is the most unbeleivable solo ever. not to mention his 20 minute solo in echoes.
simko13 08/22/2005
david RULEZ
theshouser 08/15/2005
He's a very underrated player. He played with a lot of power and grace.
Limpin' Trenchfoot 08/15/2005
There's some b*ll*cks being spouted here by those giving low ratings. What Gilmour has by the bucketload is TASTE. Where he scores over shredders like Malmsteen is that what he does suits the song. He doesnt go and drown it with loads of pointless and egotistical fretw**kery. His playing has a very lyrical quality which makes his solos memorable. IMO take Gilmour out of the equation and Floyd arent that much cop.
The Hippies Dream 08/02/2005
Kick ass guitarist man! Kick ASS! Without a doubt one of the most amazing guitarists in the whole music thing. They give you a lot of room for these things, don't they?
comfortably_nu mb 07/22/2005
Dave was one of the best and my favorite because of his expirimentation and memorable solos. He is best live and is the best live next to Hendrix
PlanetaryGear 07/18/2005
Great technical guitarist with awesome production skills. I love Pink Floyds commitment to high production value. Gilmour is the backbone of the band.
Jacqueli 06/17/2005
Outstanding guitarist. Variations.
dpostoskie 05/23/2005
Still one of, if not the best. He makes sounds that cannot be duplicated.
TheMusician 04/07/2005
Very average. Pretty cool songs, but I couldn't come close to calling him nearly the best
vetteman03 03/13/2005
Never understood Pink Floyd's lyrics, but this man can pick a guitar. Listen to the live version of Comfortably Numb from the Pulse show. One of the best solo's I've heard.
Mick Terry 02/26/2005
Granted, although not as fast or flashy as some other guitarists, David Gilmour is one of the most lyrical, passionate & tasteful. Does being the fastest make one the best? Don't subtlety, nuance & melodic substance account for anything? How about melodic memorability & staying power? Not to mention dynamics & multilayered guitar parts that really blend with & enhance the arrangements? All of the above & much more contributing to the final desired product: communication with & a connection to the listener(s) on an emotional level. How does his playing make people feel? David Gilmour's guitar work deeply moves me (& many others). It is very gripping, poignant & bittersweet. Prior to David Gilmour, Pink Floyd may have existed, but they did not excel. The level of musicianship of the entire group was raised by a quantum leap upon his entry. (e.g., compare Richard Wright's keyboard work before & after.) Gilmour's contributions to the group & to the world of music have been immense.
voncasec 01/19/2005
Pink Floyd is at it's best when David Gilmour does the music. Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, Dogs. Waters is a brilliant artist and lyricist, but the best music came from Gilmour's guitar and music.
Saronix 11/27/2004
Pink floyd rules dont get me wrong, but David Gilmour a guitar hero??? I dont think so.
netw1212 08/03/2004
This guy is amazing...
GodFather 08/02/2004
simply he is the best !
StanUzbeck 08/01/2004
Is this a joke? Pink Floyd are totally awesome but Gilmour was never much of an innovator. His solos were obviously crafted with mathematical precision and were nothing special from a technical viewpoint. If he had the ability to improvise I'd be more impressed. Feel is just as important as technique, they say, but there is something clinical about his playing. I like Floyd's music, but you can't call Gilmour a great guitarist when there are hundreds of players that would blow him out of the water. Floyd were a studio band and Gilmour was little more than a competent session player.
JagDeepView 05/01/2004
... joining the band the latest, as an onstage replacement for an invalidated Syd Barett, Gilmour was probably history's most profitable replacement. Apart from guitaring (which is wonderful indeed - his melancholic/melodious riffs like - Comfortably Numb, Shine.., Wish U were here, Marooned, Echoes etc - to name a few), he had an integral part in song writing and singing as well. Gilmour backed post-Waters' Pink Floyd has certainly achieved more success, and sounds more Floyd like than Waters' solo efforts, proving him to be at least an equal contributor to this legendary band's colossal success and certainly one of the most accomplished guitarists of all times.
Jonowales 03/07/2004
who?
DeathRattle 01/27/2004
David Gilmour is probably the most underrated guitarist of all time. So much is commented on the many aspects of Pink Floyd. Yet, the stunning guitar playing that David brings to the famous riffs of such Floyd's classics as Money, Echoes, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond is an aspect that is hardly mentioned by any rock outlets. One of the greatest solos in rock history comes from the song Comfortably Numb. Someday, his work will recieve the true appreciation that it deserves. Hopefully, this will be a start.
