Moved my dogs from Pedigree to this brand and both are now having outrageous diarrhea. Anyone else have an issue with it? I don't know now if I should toss the rest or what.... surely could NOT afford this turn of events.

I bought some of the canned puppy food for my puppy to go with her dry food (different brand) and she had no trouble with it at all. Of course she's not very picky, but it looked good and www.dogfoodanalysis.com rates this canned food well so I will continue to use it as part of her diet.

I think the price vs. quality ratio is just perfect. We were feeding our puppies California Naturals Chicken & Rice dry puppy food, and it was okay. However, their stools weren't as well-formed and this food cost more money for less food... And Chicken Soup rates higher on dogfoodanalysis.com than the California Naturals. Our two puppies loved this food, their stools are well-formed, and they both have the softest, shiniest fur possible!

Not sure about the protein comment someone mentioned, however, we also supplement our puppies with raw meat and some veggies. Like a lot of people, we couldn't afford to feed our dogs an all BARF diet. But we can get chicken leg quarters at .59 a pound...also, a lot of times the grocery store will have beef bones with some meat on them on sale for less than a dollar a pack. Our puppies do great with the Chicken Soup/some raw food combination.

Also, if you are having problems with stool formation, try some canned pumpkin in their diet. Works wonders!

I can only say that this dog food by the ingredients is very good. When I bought it though for my Giant Schnauzer she was and still a very picky eater. She will eat a very mosels of most kinds to try but this was one she did not like.Actually she will eat most if left in her bowl and her favorite is not available .This is not to say the food was bad, just that I have a finicky eater and she did not go for it at all. The ingredients thought are good.

This is a great dogfood. Since my two dogs have been eating it (two years now), both have been at a much better weight on far less volume of food. No supplements are needed for either my Golden Retreiver, who used to require skin supplements, or my GSD that needed three times the amount to maintain weight, as well as joint supplements.
It is therefore much healthier AND cheaper to feed.

This review is for Diamond's Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Adult Dog dry food. Certainly and above average food, Chicken Soup tends to be one of the more affordable of the upper echelon pet foods... but there is a reason for that. This food, although containing meats as the first four ingredients, is STILL carbohydrate heavy, and contains two portions of rice (whole grain brown rice as well as white rice). In addition to the two rice ingredients, they include barley, oats, and millet... a little overkill on the carbohydrates. Also, although the first four ingredients in this food are good meats, the protein percentage is still an average 24%, the same as many foods using only one meat ingredient in the first five. Yes, the ingredients list looks great, but realistically, this means that they are using small portions of those four meats, for the express purpose of making the food look better than it really is. Is this food good? Absolutely... but not quite as good as the ingredients would lead you to believe.

Okay.........i am trying to find an inexpensive premium dry dog food that has the best ingredients, so that your dog is healthy, and all i am finding are a bunch of consumer complaints. I am so confused. I am using Nutro Natural Choice, thinking it is good for my puppy, but she is still throwing up.......i need to find a good food that is healthy for her and stops her from throwing up........any suggestions?????????????so far, I have checked into this one, Nutro, Royal Canin and Canidae, with no luck.........

This food is one of the best. My 8 year old cocker spaniel has beautiful fur, lots of energy and eats every bite.

I notice that many reviews here indicate diarrhea and vomiting. I have to wonder if they switched their dog's diet too fast. When introducing your dog to new food, it is very important to switch GRADUALLY, or you run the risk of upsetting their stomach.

Read the ingredient list and you'll see that this is all natural (with some vitamins and minerals added, of course) and high quality. No wheat, no soy, both of which are a leading cause of allergies. High in Omega 3 fatty acids, which is great for the dog's heart and coat. The price is right too.

My dog wouldn't touch it! The quality of it isn't horrible but my dog wouldn't eat it for anything. I eventually gave up and started giving him iams again untill i find another food he likes. The quality of it is decent and when he did eat it his coat became super shiny soft. A major improvement over the iams, but no food works if he won't go new it.

We have had our 15wk old fawn doberman for a month now and have been feeding her CSFPLS since the first day we've had her. She was a little "flaky" when we got her and have noticed her skin steadily getting better (she also gets an oatmeal bath once a week) and her coat has gotten thicker and has a nice luster. She was being fed "Beniful" when we got her and I think that had a tremendous amount to do with her skin issue (grain, grain, grain). Like other reviewers, I have noticed loose stools at times, but I attribute that to my 7 year old feeding her too much and her getting too much protien (causes loose stools). You do not have to "overfeed" this food - it has what they need in the portions that are suggested. If you notice too much gas/loose stools, lessen the amount being fed! I have now put the exact measuring cup in the food tote and she is back to normal. As with any food, not all dogs are going to agree with any one brand - thats why there are so many. This food has worked GREAT for our dog. Even if it hadn't, I would not give it a horrible rating - I'd just try something else.

Very disappointed in this food, my rottie's stool is very loose, lost the luster to his coat and he is shedding alot more than he should be. Will never buy this food again for my dog. I am putting him back on Eagle Pack it is a much better brand and the quality is superior! Paying the extra money is well worth it.

We have a Shorkey (Shi-tsu - Yorkie) he is now 11 weeks old. We fed him Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul and after 3 weeks his fur lost its luster completely!! He was beautiful now hes dull and his hair soaks up water like a sponge to where before it almost repelled it at bath time. Now we started feeding him Iams smart Puppy. We hope to see results!! Also he began shedding really bad!! The mom couldnt feed him anymore at 4 weeks.. so we bottle fed him formula from the vet.. hes healthy and soooooo full of energy, I forgot puppies are so energetic!!
He loved the taste and like no tommoorw.. I think hes too fat myself, I really hope this new food helps his hair.

I've tried both the adult and senior versions for about a month now. So far, no terrible reactions and no major shedding. I'm somewhat skeptical since it seems very difficult to find a food that doesn't have something my senior guy is allergic to. My younger guy is doing better on the adult then when he tried the puppy version. I think he has an iron stomach or something. I'm keeping a watchful eye out.

My dog loved the flavor of this food, however after about a month I noticed his normally shiny, healthy coat deteriorating. It become dull and he got a LOT of flaky skin. The vet determined that he was allergic to an ingredient in the food. Within one week of stopping, he was back to normal.

We switched from Science Diet Large Breed for Puppies to Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul Large Breed and noticed my puppy's coat was shedding a lot more than usual. He was also diagnosed with demodex mange while on Chicken Soup. With the medication from the vet and AvoDerm puppy food, the itching has stopped all together and my puppy's coat is much more shinier minus the bald spots from the demodex.

The ingredients and the price is what lead me to Chicken Soup, but it just didn't workout for my puppy.

Our German Shepherd liked the large breed variety of this food well enough, but it gave him HORRIBLE gas that only got worse with time. We switched to Blue Buffalo and the gas mostly cleared up. I'm still giving it a good review because besides the gas, his stools were fine, he loved the food and it has a good mix of ingredients.

I bought this food based on reviews on this site as well as dogfoodanalysis.com. It is highly ranked on that site and apparently has really good ingredients.

About a month after we switched, I noticed our dog was shedding a lot more. She's part basenji and not supposed to shed too much, so I just thought it was because the seasons are changing. The shedding continued to get worse and I noticed that her paws were dry and not as soft as they used to be (she's only about a year old). Now it's to the point where you can run your hand over her fur and pull out massive clumps of hair. We started her on a omega 3 and 6 fatty acid supplement and then decided to take her off of this food.

We are switching to another food that's "supposed" to be good, but I'm a little hesisitant and disappointed after trying Chicken Soup. I'm tempted to just put her back on Hill's Science diet (what she was on when we got her) even though it's full of "fillers." At least it didn't make her hair fall out.

I had my golden on this food. Although the ingredients look to be good it caused quite a few problems. His stool was runny and sometimes just plain nasty diarrhea. He seemed a bit lethargic at times. I thought this would be a great food but I was very disappointed in the outcome. He was on it for 2 months before I finally said enough is enough. I also don't like the fact that Diamond makes it.

I have been feeding my pup since he was 8 weeks old and now he is 8 months old. I was very happy with a product, his coat was shiny, and he seemed very healthy. However, last week, I opened a new bag, and Toby woke me up in the middle of the night crying. I took him out he had the worst ever! He was throwing up. I kept on waking up throughout the night. I took him off the food immediately, but he was still very sick for over four days. I asked the people who sell this food if there were any complaints. All Toby's siblings are fed same food, and we all get it at the same place. But there were no complaints. So I thought ok maybe a coincidence. I took him to vet, vet thought maybe some stress caused it. I recently moved so maybe.... A week later (yesterday) I mixed in just a little bit of dry food, and I woke up at night to him throwing up.
He seems to do better this time, since there wasn't much food.... But again was it food? I am not so much rating this product, as trying to figure out if other dogs getting sick. I thought this food was the best of the best. My pup looked great and felt great. But it seems like there are too many coincidences. I googled this brand and after I realized that this brand was a recall, it made me really nervous.
Please advise and share your thoughts. Am I being paranoid, or this food really made him sick!

Our black lab was getting flaky dry skin, doggie odor and lots of eye gobbers. A groomer told us that he had was loaded with yeast and was probably allergic to the corn or something in his dog food. We had been feeding him Purina Bentiful, She recommended the Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. With in a week of switching his skin got better, his coat shined up, and did not have nearly the eye gobbers that he had. He doesnt smell like a dirty dog anymore and is coat is so soft to the touch. Has more energy too.

Now the big surprise was the results of feeding this food to our 11yr old Brittany. He is getting older and you could tell that he was sore alot of the times. He would have trouble getting comfortable when he went to lay down and would be stiff in the morning. With this dog food, he is doing so much better. No more morning stiffness(even in this cold Michigan weather) and omg does he have more energy all day long. His fur is so soft also. He has always had alot of energy, most people wouldnt believe he was as old as he is, but he was aching alot in the 6 months before we started feeding him this dog food. I was afraid to walk him much this winter cause he would pay for it the next day, but not anymore.

Like the groomer said " when was the last time you saw a dog eating out of corn field?" Most of your grocery bought dog food's main ingredient is corn which can cause alot of problems in dogs. I never thought that much about dog food before but after seeing how it has help our dogs, there is a difference. One final note, it may cost more than your grocery store dog food but my dogs actually eat less I believe because it is not full of fillers. Even feed less than the recommended amounts to both dogs and the lab is not pushing his bowl aournd the floor asking for more.

Please do not feed your dog this food. Here's what happened to my 8 yr old pitbull who had thrown up only once since we'd had her until we changed her to this food...

About a month into switching her to this food, Molly vomited once several hours after eating the kibble. It was strange b/c the kibble was largely undigested and the amount that she threw up was pretty large (ie more than we feed her in one meal). We didn't really think much of it b/c she seemed chipper and alert.

Approximately a month later we had run out of her wet food so we had to double her kibble for about 2-3 days. Apparently it was too much for her (strong) tummy to handle, so she vomited twice about 2-3 hours after meal time. She was very lethargic and wouldn't really eat or drink. Then we noticed she was shaking and started having diarrhea. We immediately took her to the vet where we found out that she had a 104.5 temp (102 is top of normal range for a dog). Her xrays came back normal as did her bloodwork and organ function profile. She's been home since yesterday and is just now starting to show interest in food.

We will never put our dog through this again by feeding her commercial food. We were already interested in the BARF (raw) diet, and this has sealed the deal. We will be switching her over to 100% raw/ natural food as soon as her tummy is up for it. This switch will also probably save us money considering we had to pay $671 for her to go to the vet...probably more than a year's worth of raw food.

My 4 mos havanese loved this food! Couldn't wait for me to put his bowl down. Unfortunately, he appeared to be bloating a bit and gaining a little too much weight. I had to discontinue it. Must have been the fish that he was so attracted to.

My 13 week old chocolate lab loves the puppy lover's... We are by means rich or high end, but that Ol' Roy, Pedigree, and Kibbles and Bits stuff will never enter her belly. Very affordable and highly recommended. Many great ingredients, and corn meal is not the top one as in most "low-rent" varieties.

My dogs started out life eating Nutro Natural and then about 5-6 years ago, switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul(CSDLS)and they both have been living very long healthy lives. This summer my oldest one passed away at the age of 15, she was a large Wolf Hybrid, and did not look or act her age at all. She was active and had a shinny healthy coat right to the end. My other dog is an Aussie/Sheltie mix and she is 13 years old and very active and healthy and is aging quite gracefully. The reason that I had switched my dogs to CSDLS was because I like the list of ingredients better then what the Nutro has but on the occasions that I couldn't find CSDLS, I then would revert and buy Nutro, so between these two brands of foods, my dogs have led very long, active and healthy lives. They have never had a sick day once and I attribute that to the excellent nutrition provided by these two brands of food.

This is my follow up post from my comment left of 9/15/2008. Today is 9/24/2008 and I have since been giving my 3 months old pup about a hand full of CSFTDLSPF once in the morning and at night. I have noticed a BIG difference, his gas has stopped and his stool is more solid. I must agree with everyone else his coat is soooo soft and shiny. He is always full of energy and gets very excited at feeding time. As he gets bigger I will make his portions bigger, but due to the high protein I think that is why he has such bad smelling gas. Hope this helps!

This is an excellent food. I have 4 pugs 2 adults and 2 seniors. And they absolutely LOVE it. Their skin and coats are more shinier and healthier than they have ever been. Their eyes and ears are bright and gleaming and their overall health is great. I am so glad i found this food. It's made with all natural healthy ingredients good enough for us to eat. My dogs get a full balanced meal with all the 4 food groups every time i fill the bowl. And it is priced very reasonable. I would recommend it to everyone. Couldn't ask for a better food :) I'm sure my dogs will live a long and healthy life :)

Runny stools are usually the result of feeding toooo much food at one time. Healthy dogs like to eat. I have found that my dogs average about about one 8 oz cup per 40 lbs of dog and do great. This is an excellent food for the money. In fact I would rate it one of the best values in pet food. It is made by Diamond. If you want a single source protein food you might try Diamond Premium Edge. They have an excellent Skin and Coat salmon based formula, a Lamb and Rice, and a Chicken and Rice formuala. All great value

The food receives good ratings and we bought it at the suggestion of a pet store owner when the Nutro we prefer was out of stock. Our older dogs have been on Nutro Lamb and Rice for years, and have done quite well. The puppy loves the taste of the CS food but has had terribly runny and smelly stools since he started it 3 weeks ago. Last night we gave him the Nutro adult food and no CS, and already this morning his stools were much more solid. I don't know why he can't tolerate it, but was glad to see the reviews that others have the same issues.

I switched my husky-mix and bulldog/mastiff to CSFTDLS after both had been on Solid Gold (Hund-n-Flocken). I was looking to switch to Innova due to the bulldog having gas issues with the SG. While searching at a local feedstore I saw a bag of CSFTDLS and flipped it over to check the ingredients. They are comparable to any premium dry kibble on the market and the price was under $35 for a 35lb bag (cheaper than SG and MUCH cheaper than Innova). We are now ending the first month on CSFTDLS and I could not be more impressed and my husky has finally found a food she actually LIKES.

Great ingredients at a fantastic price!

Switched my two 6 month chocolate labs from ONE to CSFTDLS large breed puppy for a better food. Ingrediants and reviews were good. They were on it for 2 1/2 weeks. Stools were running, both had gas and they would groan during. I switched to Canidae ALS and within two days they were dropping logs. It seemed to be a good food but both my dogs could not tolerate CSFTDLS large breed puppy.

I have a dobe pup that i have on eukanuba lg breed puppy. He developed nutritional osteodystrophy. I was told by his orthopedic specialist to switch him from a lg breed puppy food to an adult diet. I put this pup on CS and in about 2 weeks, he went from almost non weight bearing in the front left leg to completley NORMAL!! Thankyou so much for such a great food. I have been feeding my Aussies that i show in AKC and ASCA CS for years, and i love the food. I still feed Euk. Puppy to my Pregnant girls, but wont use it for puppies. I would highly reccomend this diet to anyone.

Switched my Bichon from Innova to CS and so far could not be happier. Innova gave him runny stools constantly, though he had high energy. After switching to this, stools are very firm and he still has very high energy (though he is a Bichon). His coat is also very soft and shiny. I have had him on this for about 6 months now and I don't anticipate taking him off it.

This is an excellent food!!! I did a whole lot of research before deciding which food to put my dogs & cats on. Chicken Soup is by far the best food for the money. My pets have never experienced any loose stools or negative affects that others have mentioned in these reviews. I also rotate in Nature's Variety, Wellness & Merrick Wilderness whenever they are on sale just to add a little variety. I don't believe that anyone should eat the same ingredients day after day after day, no matter how high the quality, that's why I rotate with other super premium foods. Chicken Soup for the Kitten/Cat Lover's Soul & Chicken Soup for the Puppy/Dog Lover's Soul is the primary food that my cats and large breed dogs eat. I also want to add that they have been eating this food since they were puppies/kittens, shortly after I found out how bad commercial foods can be. Please do the research to find out what the ingredients in your dog food mean- there are a WHOLE lot of bad foods out there that I would not feed my pets even if they were free. Stay away from corn- dogs & cats don't digest it, stay away from by-products when you do the research you'll find out why, stay away from the word meat or animal- these words include euthinized dogs & cats. Once you've done the research and learn to read the labels, you'll see why Chicken Soup is an excellent choice. And my pets love it!!

I love it. the dogs love it. they did get the gas and runs at first even with carful switching over. but it was mearly an adjustment issue. a little less and the problem corrected itself. i have a 15 year old schnouser and a 5 year old austrailian shepard coyoty mix. the coy mix had the gas and poo problems. i have tryed her on many kinds of foods and because she is a coydog her digestion is different. she needs less food with higher protien. this is the ONLY dog food that has kept her at a good weight(others tend to make her fat fast)good coat and she loves the taste.

My 15 month old and 7 month old female large breed mixes love it. Their coats shine  and they run like the wind.

This food is horrible, I switched from nutro large breed and CS gave both my puppies terrible constant gas and runny stools, one of them even had bloody runny stools, this never occured with nutro, but my Rotti's skin allergies led to the switch in the first place

I show, raise and breed rhodesian ridgebacks and they all love this food!  They all have shiny coats (a must in the show ring!), great muscle and they all act happy when i put the food dish down.  I am also a veterinary technician and i do a ton of research before doing anything with my dogs.  after researching this diet, even though it is made by diamond, it has not been affected by recalls and after speaking with a rep to confirm what is on the label is what's in the bag- i believe that this is a solid food to feed.  it has premium ingredients, not outrageously expensive (what good is a food if you can't afford it?!?) and is palatable.  again, there is no one "perfect" dog food for every dog out there.  You must tailor the diet to fit the dog's needs and tolerence.  for me, it's a great food.

I want to note here for reference, I have not used this food but the place we get our food carried all the best foods (Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, etc.) and they told me when I came in to look for CHicken Soup that after setensive research they found the reputration seems to not match the quality, this was from a review of ingredients and comparison to other top brands. We ultimately ended up on Innova with fantastic results after a bad experience with diarhhea on Wellness.

About 3 days after my then 6 and a half month old puppy started on CS large breed puppy she started vomiting and had bloody diarrhea for 2 days (over weekend) vet on monday said no parvo but had gastroenteritis and said that it could be caused by her food which was her only environmental change. i will NEVER buy a product made by diamond ever again i had them on diamond large breed puppy and she had nothing but problems with it as well. i have 2 boxers. when i called CS the rep could not answer one question i had about recalls and wanted to transfer me to someone else but the conveniently werent available. PLEASE DONT FEED YOUR ANIMALS THIS FOR THEIR HEALTH!!!!

I have found CS to be a very satisfactory dog food. I feed it in conjunction with a home cooked diet. My dogs have never had any digestive or allergy problems from this food. Living in a rural area, it is the best food available without having to order through the mail

My best friend's Coonhound has been eating this for two years and he is the picture of health. He had eaten a few lower quality foods before and had a dry coat and scabby skin. Within the first bag of Chicken Soup his coat started improving. It's soft and extremely shiny! I'm most likely going to switch my Shih Tzu to Chicken Soup canned, so I'll have to make a separate report after I see the results.

Edited to add that Potbelly Pig is either a troll or has the ingredient list confused with a different food. If you read the Chicken Soup label you'll see only "real" foods, followed by supplements, probiotics and vitamins.
