Although not terribly interesting, Casper was one I enjoyed seeing a lot. Always been very scared of ghosts myself, it helped to see a cute cartoon version of ghost with all the friendliness in the world. Also, I could relate to him very well as a kid as I was also very desparate to make friends with others, and often got rejected for no particularly good reasons.

I remember being disappointed as a kid whenever Casper came on the tube. Friendliness goes only so far in the cartoon world, at least after the age of five. The cartoon ws a one-trick pony: Casper wanted to make friends, but instead, he ended up scaring potential buddies. Over and over and over again.:

I like this sweet little character. Casper symbolizes the outcasts and misfits around us who try as hard as they can to be outgoing, but somehow fail. I saw a '40s Casper cartoon. It was about Casper as he set off trying to befriend those around him, only to scare off everyone he crossed paths with. Then he finally meets a little fox, who becomes friends with him. Danger strikes, and Casper could not save the critter in time. The little fox died, leaving poor Casper, once again, friendless -- until he finds out the fox becomes a ghost like him.
