 | Redoedo (39) 02/28/2004 | Let me be clear on one thing. While I may be quick to engage in a debate on JFK's record as President, I have never once given him higher than a 3 star rating on RIA for the simple fact that he doesn't deserve anything higher. He was a mediocre president with a mixed record, but his actual accomplishments and the fact that he accomplished more in three years than some presidents who served entire terms should not be ignored. One can argue that he might've been a good or great president had he served two full terms, but as I've said before, we must judge history as it was and not how it might've been (a quote attributed to Kennedy himself). Objectively, Kennedy had a mixed record as president and never truly got a chance to prove whether or not he had the capacity to deserve the high marks currently given to him in the history books.

 | CanadaSucks (45) 02/28/2004 | Now this is a sacred cow that I would lash, kill, and roast for lunch. JFK is the most overrated American figure of the 20th century. He jumped on the Civil Rights bandwagon when it was convenient for him. . .Bay of Pigs, anyone? And leftists and Hollywood keeps telling us the story of how the Kennedys saved Western Civilization during the Cuban Missle Crisis. (He deserves credit, but it was overblown.)

 | scarletfeather (47) 02/27/2004 | JFK was no FDR or Abraham Lincoln, and his rise should be credited to his aggressive, scheming father. Without his father's wheeling and dealing, JFK might be alive today. Left to his own devices, he might have pursued a career as a journalist or as an author. JFK posessed average leadership skills, though admittedly he did not get a chance to hone them, since his presidency was of short duration. But I am disgusted by the myth of Camelot. One might have thought JFK was a Lincoln-FDR clone to hear some people carry on. And though I am a liberal Democrat, I do not care for the Kennedys. They may have high ideals, but they have no morals, and seem to think that the rules of society don't apply to them.

 | abichara (60) 02/27/2004 | JFK is a sacred cow not only here on Rate-It-All (right Redoedo?) but in popular culture and history as well. Kennedy has his acolytes and defenders in very high places, so the history books have given him a far better treatment than he deserves. I wouldn't rank him one of the best Presidents we've ever had, by a long shot. Some of the mistakes he made were almost colossal in nature. Indeed, it could be fairly argued that his actions during the Vienna summit with Nikita Khruschev and the Bay of Pigs early in 1961 lead to the Soviets installing nuclear weapons 90 miles off the coast of the United States. Really the Missile Crisis didn't have to happen; maybe if Nixon was President during that time it would have never happened because the Russians wouldn't have dared mess the ardent anti-communist. So why is JFK a sacred cow? He did communicate himself well and in politics thats about 60% of the battle. He was charismatic and witty, qualities that endeared him to the people. He was forthright whenever he made a mistake and that went a long way as well. Most of all, he was assassinated at a young age. Like Lincoln, a myth began to develop around him when he didn't deserve to have one. It was his wife who developed the myth of Camelot and sold it to the American people rather effectively.

 | irishgit (138) 02/27/2004 | By any objective standard, this guy was a mediocre president. Such potential that he may have had ended in Dealey Plaza and he left behind a legacy of half-loaf accomplishments. Certainly he was young, handsome, charismatic and the first president that had an understanding of the power of media. This does not make him great. If one says the above, or some version of it, there are those on RIA and in the real world who get ferociously worked up. Let me be clear, I'm not talking about Redoedo, our local chair of the JFK Defense League, who makes his points with some clarity and logic. I am referring to the the thimblewits who worship a Kennedy Camelot that never existed except in the minds and pens of the mythmakers.
