snakes are expensive to feed, they are not affectionate and they like to be by themselves. most guests in a house that has snakes would probably be disgusted.

I wouldn't want a snake for a pet, but if you want one, go for it.

My complaint for these is they don't do very much, and require frozen animals for meals. Other than that, they're friendlier than their reputation, and don't require much of your time to maintain. I certainly wouldn't mind having one but probably won't go out of my way to get one.

I love snakes and i always have. They are very exotic! A lot of people question people that have venomous snakes and the reason for that it because they are studying them. A majority of places you have to have a license to own venomous snakes. I personally wouldn't own a big snake like a boa python but some snakes are enjoyable. I own two bearded dragons and they are like dogs, they crave human attention and when they get to know you they look forward to seeing you come home, they are the dogs of the reptile world. and for those of you that think all snakes are dangerous my friend has had her snake for 5 years and she has never gotten bit. The thing with a lot of animals is that you never know if anything is wrong with them if they are feeling sick or sore so if you invade their space when they feel vunerable then yes they will defend themselves.
Veneno773 05/08/2008
Snakes are awesome creatures. They do not attack, tehy are great pets if you have kids. I a m mind boggled by the morons who think all snakes are venemous and bloodthrisrty killers who watn to strangle you. Dogs are more dangerous. People nowadays just believe everything they see on T.V. Mouse cute fuzzy animal- Good Snake ugly scaly animal- Ugly. People are so stupid.
Mr.Tuner 02/29/2008
They are pretty interesting and it is cool to watch them grow! They are just interesting enough that they always will have your attention.
spinette 10/26/2007
No,no,no, they need to be outdoors, even though I have reptile type snakes, I still at times would like to let them loose in a pond someplace, it is more work for me.
Jamie McBain 09/18/2007
Why have a snake for a pet? They can attack, and not great pets, if you have kids.
I am mind boggled by people who have large snakes or venomous snakes, for pets.
It's like waiting for an accident to happen.
LadyJesusFan77 7 09/08/2007
I do not think reptiles of any kind make good pets.
Casey1334 03/14/2007
I can understand that some people are afraid of snakes... But many of you are just really ignorant about them. -Snakes DO have backbones. -Most pet snakes that get used to being handled aren't "prone to attack their owners" more than other pets, as long as you act responsibly and respect their nature. Getting bitten while feeding something to the snake isn't really the snake's fault. They go by the smell, and if you're holding a mouse or rat they have no way of knowing that your hand isn't part of it. That's why one should use tongs or something if you want to dangle the mouse in front of the snake. -Most aren't venomous. Very very few people keep venomous snakes as pets. Most pet snakes are harmless. If you do get bitten, just wash it off and treat it like any wound. I would rather be bitten by a (non-venomous)snake than by a large dog. -That "animals are afraid of us" stuff isn't "crap". They are afraid of us if they feel like we are posing a threat to them. Biting is only in self-defense(unless you smell like a mouse), they don't just decide to be mean for no reason(there would be no benefit to them.. they know you're too big to eat). And most kinds of snake will try to get away before they will resort to trying to bite you(with a few exceptions, such as cottonmouths). When i first got my snake it was shy and it would try to get away from me all the time when i tried to hold it(and babies are more nervous than adults), but even then it never bit me. I have an amelanistic Corn Snake. He's easy to keep, beautiful, and interesting. Even when i'm just watching him move around in his tank, he has some behaviors that are fun to watch. He likes to climb, and sometimes takes a swim in his water bowl. Even my mom, who says she hates snakes, thinks he's cute. When she was watching him eat today she kept saying "aww.. isn't that yummmy?" in a baby voice to him. lol. I'd also love to get more snakes in the future. I know i want a Colombian Boa Constrictor, they're so pretty.
Momsandpopscal lmeJoe 02/27/2007
I like watchin' snakes on animal documentaries but I'd never ever would want a pet snake. They're freakin' scary and they're prone to attack their owners. I was watchin' a show and this guy was feedin his snake a rat and the snake bit him. He ended up losing a finger, no thanks.
Victor83 02/17/2007
Snakes may make poor pets....but they make great presidents- according to NPR, the New York Times, MSNBC, and so forth. Cut snakes some slack.
GenghisTheHun 02/17/2007
Snakes make poor pets. I would wonder why anyone has a snake for a pet. The venomous ones are dangerous no matter how long you have them or feed them.
puppyloverkb 01/04/2007
Snakes are definetly a interesting pet. For all those that spouted off about how much they hate snakes really haven't taken the time to look at one. They are amazing creatures. The key to understanding them is in the different types of snakes available to the public. Kingsnakes, milksnakes, and rosy boas are great pets for kids. They are very easy to hold and still move around enough to keep kids entertained. They also only grow to be around 3-4 feet (which is relatively small for a snake). But I think the biggest plus to owning a snake is that you don't need UV lighting. All snakes need is heat and they'll be happy. The reason I rated snakes a four is because of the feeding situation. Snakes require rodents....theres no getting around it. If you can get your snake to eat frozen thats great, but a lot can't resist live mice and rats. (For those of you who think this is cruel, ever seen a mouse or rat eat its baby's...believe me, its disgusting and I therefore have no qualms about feeding them to my snake). Hope this helps, and for all of you ignorant people who hate snakes...go down to your local pet store and hold a rosy boa, you'll be glad you did :)
mdguineapigguy 10/13/2006
I hate snakes! All snakes! They're gross, repulsive and disgusting! I am also, however, a die-hard believer in animal rights and so I do believe they too have their place in nature and I would never dream of harming one. I don't mind them if they're out in the jungle somewhere but you couldn't pay me enough to keep one as a pet in my house! They are just so nasty! They also remind me of the devil - I always think they're kind of like the devil in animal form, although that's probably ridiculous. Then again, just read Genesis! I also believe people have no business at all keeping animals for pets which they really can't handle and then dumping them out in the wild somewhere. It ruins the ecosystem - just look at the problems they're having in Florida now with this. It isn't fair to the rest of the environment and much as I don't care for them, it isn't fair to the snakes either.
JohnSpina 04/06/2006
They are ugly, have no spines are cold blooded and slither. But enough about politicians....
Ih8rateitall 03/10/2006
Do you know why these things are exotic pets? It's because they are venomous, dangerous creatures that want to bit you! Don't give me that animals are afraid of us crap! I see it on t.v. all the time dudes. On the t.v. show Maximum Exposure, a dude was feeding his snake a rat and the snake didn't eat the rat, the snake bit the dude's hand! That's not the way I roll dudes, that's not the way I roll.

I have a corn snake, Zippy, and she doesn't greet me at the door like my dog does, and she doesn't make me laugh like my hamster does, but she makes me smile when she climbs in her cage. When I come into the room I like the way she comes out of her hiding spot. And when its a warm night I take her for a ride on my bike. It's all how you look at it. Cute and cuddly may be for you. Silky smooth may not. Whatever it is, don't think your comment is right whether it's pro snake or not.

Snakes are AWESOME! I am 12 and I was a little creeped out in the begining but not now. I LOVE My baby Corn Snake, Curious, and for those who say they don't move, you need help. Curious moves ALL over and is so fun 2 watch. I have friends who come over and Curious will stare at them if they hit me, or he feels like they are offending me and he'll shake his tail at them and get all big. It's so cute. I love Curious. He has such a unique personality. And he loves crawling around on my back and head and shirt. he is only about 6 months old and is about 12 or 13 inches long. I love him so much!!
gwennieb 12/14/2005
it's not a pet if you want something cuddly. this is true. I am a proud owner of a 5 month old ball python. He is great with all my roommates. They can take him out of his cage when ever they want-whether i'm here or not. He is completely tolerant of being passed around coiled around people's necks or arms. He's adorable when he investigates different areas of the apartment, and is quite the nice, simple pet. They have more personality that one would think. My friend has a ball python that has not been handled enough and is not nearly as personable. But Skittles, my snake, loves being handled and the attention he gets.[and i'm not home much- VERY low upkeep]

snakes are awesome i have a jungle carpet python and a ball python and they never bit me once im also gettin a brazilian rainbow boa next month not all snakes are mean and aggressive so all u ppl who just think that snakes r just creatures that will bite anything it sees just shut up cuz u dont no anything about snakes yea some snakes bite but with constant handling they will eventually stop and get used 2 u
mixitup 01/24/2005
Snakes are awsome, I dont see why some of you have to wonder why people would want one. They are fun to have, and learn more about. I know that they are not for some people, so if they are not for you, then fine, stay away from them, but learn more about them before you start bashing them.... Also, saying that you have to buy a constant stream of live animals is also false, because you can buy a bunch of them at a time by getting frozen ones... which can last you months, or more depending on how many you buy... this doesn't cost very much either

Snakes are VERY misunderstood i own 9 of them and they are all relitivly large owning an animal such as a boa constrictor or python teaches patence and understandingi have 8 diffrent speices of python and one 9 foot red tail boa. some of the speices i own have been known to be aggressive but i have NEVER BEEN BITTEN. All they require is respect, and considering they were around with the dinosaurs, i beleive they have earned it.

I have A hatchling amber corn snake i have had him for about 3 weeks and hes the coolest thing ever! hes affectionate....unless hes hungary than he can get nippy but he is so small you cant even feel the teeth it is fun to watch him eat and you dont need to buy live food i get frozen pinkie mice and thaw then out and feed it to him and he likes it just fine so if you considering getting a snake i say go for it but make sure you get the one that is right for you (size, aggression and money wise)
Colubrid King 02/09/2004
ok first of. i agree with snake king or whatever his name was. the guy with 6 snakes. the comments you people are making about pet snakes are COMPLETELY misinformed. you're just afraid because you don't understand it. comments like wiggums heavy metal or wrestling thing are totally unjustified. that's just a stereotyped view. how would you people like it if i called all you americans rednecks? or if i said you were all obssessed with guns and killing, and your president is a total moron? well sure, i think your president is a moron, (bush), but i'm SURE there are plenty of americans who aren't rednecks, and who don't own guns, and stuff like that. i have 18 snakes of various species and sizes, some of them have their attitudes, and some of them are sweet little creatures the love to have their head scratched. sure, they can't guard your house or anything, but if that's the reason you own a pet, then why don't you just get an alarm system. it'd be much more effective then a dog wagging his tail. snakes DO have and they do SHOW emotions. just not the same way people or dogs do. you have to LEARN how to read them, because they're not humans, so stop rating them like they're the devils in humanity. most of the people who rated snakes low made comments that are totally and completely crap! they are not even slightly true, like feeding live mice and stuff like that. 99% of pet snakes will eat dead mice. and how is that different from a cat or dog? sure, there's a WHOLE animal, but did you EVER stop and think of what's in catfood or dogfood? a horse or a cow that's been through a meat grinder. which animal makes less of a mess when it eats? and have you ever seen a cat kill a mouse? they TOY with it. at least snakes kill and eat quickly. you all can tell me that snakes are mean, viscious animals, but obviously you have no idea what you're talking about, so i'm probably not gonna listen anyways. and like, TheFreak, i have a snake crawling at my feet right now. her name is boots and she's a 6 foot redtail boa. (purebred surinam for you snake freaks. really nice snake) and that luksywker guy or whatever his name is, chances are the snakes you've stepped on in the past were NOT venomous. they only looked like it as a defense mechanism. only maybe 1/10th of the snakes on north america are dangerous, and only in certain areas can you find those snakes. don't go telling me the red, black and white snake you stepped on was dangerous, cause it was probably a milksnake. and if it convinced you it was poisonous, despite you having the most advanced brain on the planet compared to a snakes peanut sized brain, then who's come out on top in the end? and as far as having no emotion, and not being able to tell the difference between people, i'll let you people handle my jungle carpet python and you can tell me he doesn't recognize me. he'll bite anyone but me. he hates EVERYONE but me. with me he's completely docile, but when someone else touches him, he goes crazy. (except my girlfriend, he's starting to get used to her now. still quite edgy though) anyways, if you're going to rate a pet on this website, stick to something you know and understand. don't just select snake and badmouth them, because that only makes you seem really stupid to the people that know and understand snakes. and we all know how good at being stupid americans seem to be. try visiting europe. you'd do better off to tell people over there you're canadian.
icespray 12/29/2003
I've had a pet corn snake for 2 years now. I've had her since she was a little itty snake. The first year I had Shime she didn't have much of a personality at all, but I also was paying no attention to her besides basic care. This last year I've been playing with her a lot and even made a teepee for her cage. Where she used to hide all the time now she peeks her head out of her teepee whenever I come into the room. My point is that the value of a pet is how much you put into it. At first Shime was skittish and shy, but once I started handling her often she became very friendly and fun. On the general care of snakes, they are very easy to take care of - depending on the species you get. I have a little heat pad for Shime and that's all I use for temperature change. She's near a window so she gets sunlight in parts of the day. I feed her once a week and they are the cleanist animals I've ever had. If you want companionship that needs a leash pass snakes on, but if you are looking for one on one companionship snakes can definitely fit the bill, but it's up to you to initiate it!

SNAKES ARE GOOD PETS ,IF YOU LIKE THAT STUFF.THEY ARE VERY CUTE ANIMALS AND THEY ARE LOTS OUT THEIR,WITH DIFFERENT DESIGNES ON THEM.I LIKE TO SEE THE NEAT MARKINGS ON THEM.THE ONLY BAD PART ABOUT A SNAKE,ITS THAT THEY EAT CUTE LITTLE MICE AND BABY BIRDS IN THEIR NEST,BUT THATS MOTHER NATURE.
