I'm 15 and I've had horrible acne for 2 years now. I started accutane only a month ago and it is doing what it is suposed to. It is drying out my skin and my acne is going away day by day. I might have chaped lips but that is the extent of the effects. The product is amazing and I recomend it to anyone who has severe acne.

I am 19 and i have had bad acne since i was 12. A dermotologist suggested i go on accutane two years ago, and i said no because of all the side effects and scary things i had heard about it. Four months ago, i finally decided to start using accutane because nothing else worked and i had been getting bad acne scars. In the past few years, i tried everything from creams, to benza-mycin (a very drying cream), proactive, and everything i could get my hands on and nothing worked. I have been almost completely acne free since i started using accutane and the side effects are not as bad as they say it is. I am extremely happy with accutane and strongly recommend it for anyone with severe acne. Awsome Product, worth every penny.

I am now on my fifth month of accutane, and hopefully my last. My acne has improved quite a bit, but is not completely healed. I still have red marks from old acne, and a few pimples. This product would be great if it wasn't for the side effects. My lips are dry 24/7. They bleed and it feels like i literaly can't go thirty minutes with chapstick. My face is very dry, but when i put lotion on it the acne seemed to stop getting better. So i have been toughing it out for the last couple of months. Hard to take during the winter becuase of the cold, which gave me even worse dry skin. I also read on the package that it can close growth plates prematurely. I am 15 and still growing and would be devastated if i stopped growing. I also had a very severe dry eye problem. I wear contacts so that probablly didn't help the issue. I took my contacts out one night and noticed that my eye was throbbing and bright red. It was so red it resembled pink eye. When i went into the doctor they said I had keratitis, but when i went to the opthamalagist she said i just had a severe case of dry eye. I tried every acne medication in the book, or pretty close, and none worked for me. This definitely has worked on my acne so far and I hope it continues to, but this stuff is pretty close poisen. There are so many side effects that i wouldn't recommend it until you have tried everything else. I bet this stuff will be taken off the market in the next ten years. The bottom line is if you've tried everything else and don't care about potential side effects and some side effects that are pretty much unavoidable, then take it. If you don't want your blood drawn every month(not to big of a deal), having problems getting your medicene from you pharmasist, because of the new I Pledge program, and don't want any side effects don't take it.

Hi all, first I want to thank everyone who is helping out by writing here. I'm 21 and this is it I took my decision for Accutane and I'm starting in 5 days. And I guess there is no other way I'm so sick of it and I can't take it anymore. My question is how much did each of you pay for the pills? And is there a cheaper way I can get them? I'm independent and I just saw numbers like $1000? Scary for me. My second question that is there any recommendations you can advice me for the first week of use and did u guys do a Blood test before you started the treatment?

Only thing that actual CLEARS up your skin! But i was on it 3 times and each time a year later it would come back! IT has HORRIBLE side effects and i had all of them. Terrible depression, moodswings, hair loss, chapped lips, sever muscle and joint problems, and liver softing. I ONLY recommend it to SEVERE acne patients. It is a GREAT pill that really does work, but in the long run with the long term side effects, its not worth it. I also have a spastic colon,IC-inflammation of the bladder, a soft liver, bad knees, after 3 years i STILL HAVE CHAPPED lips, and terrible back problems!

I've been on accutane for about 2 monthes now. My acne isn't horrible but it still bothers me. I go in and out of good and bad days but im def starting to see some improvement lately. I'm 15, sophmore in HS, and hoping for this to really start kicking in. I love reading about all the great positive reviews but those bad ones scare me. So far chapped lips like everyone else says seems to be problem, especially when i'm skiing and especialyl since i'm a racer it really sucks, but anything to get the acne to go away!

I am a Freshmen in High school and ive hade acne since 7th grade. I thought that it would be a good thing to try and then sure enough my face got better then into the 2nd month it got worse. And me as a trumpet player it ruined my playing becuase it dried out my lips so much and it made me extremely iritable and in return i lost freinds. I would say this can have a good physical affect but it really messed with my head

I'm 14 years old, and am currently on accutane. I have had horrible acne since 4th grade. I've gone to a dermatologist religiously for the past 4 years. It seems like I've tried everything. Nothing worked. I was so embarrassed that I was reluctant to leave the house, and even the heaviest makeup couldn't camouflage my skin. i had very low self eestem and was painfully shy. I recently went on Accutane because it was my last option. My parents were concerned about the side effects, but I was desperate. So far, I love Accutane. I have had no side effects at all (not even chapped lips) and my skin is getting clearer like magic.
jenniferbsu08 11/06/2005
My junior year in high school I decided my acne was not going away on it's own. My dermatologist prescribed several different types of drugs to help me with my acne. None of them worked, so he put me on Accutane half way throw my first year in college. After the first month of using it, my face started to clear up. I was on it for five months and eventually my skin cleared up. It even make these little purple marks that I had on one of my cheeks go away. A year later, I have the occasional pimple but not anything nearly as bad as I had when I was a teenager. There is one thing that I do not like after my treatment. The pimples that I do get, are deeper in my skin, which hurts a lot because I can't even pop them. (I know you are not supposed to) They are also the bigger ones not the little whiteheads that I used to get. Other than that I am absolutely satified with my treatment. My friends who used this form of treatment in their later teens have not had any breakouts since their treatment. Therefore I recommend Accutane to those who are in their late teens and have tried othe methods.

i have had acne as far back as 6th or 7th grade, and i am currently in my freshman year of college (and yes i still have it). i went on accutane at the beginning of my senior year of high school because i had known people that went on it and it worked GREAT for them. but only after a few days of being on it my acne got worse and continued to get worse to the point of where it seemed to have increased at least 20-fold. this inevitably led to scaring and marks that have still not gone away. i have been off accutane for about 3 months now and of course my acne is coming back. i have tried to use benzoyl peroxide but that just seems to be making my skin extremely dry. i tried to go back on accutane last week but i pulled myself off it because i began to see an increase of acne again, and i am not going through that experience once4 more. so basically, all i can tell you is that accutane has no definite outline, it is different for everyone. try it if you wish, but please be cautious and dont take it lightly.
amariej 10/20/2004
I'm 16 years old and i'm still currently on accutane. This has been the best thing to happen to me! I had bad acne, not as bad as it gets, but bad enough to lower my self esteem and make me miss out on a lot of my childhood because of embarrassment. I always would have to put on makeup before leaving the house ever since elemetary because I was so embarrassed. Now I hardly wear any! I definitely think that it's worth a try because now I have more self confidence than ever and am totally enjoying life without having to worry about stupid acne!
Chyna 07/22/2004
I was on accutane 3 years ago for 4 weeks and to date I continue to suffer from dramatic hair loss. The reason I discontinued the treatment was because I noticed my hair was falling out. This has become another depression for me. My acne improved dramatically with Tetracycline only that once I was off it, I would have occassional breakouts. I am no longer on Tetracycline, but my acne is controlled due to my birth control pills. Even though everyone's experiences and side effects are different, I would not recommend Accutane. My dermatologist visits are now due to my hair loss. What a trade off!

I had terrible cystic acne, and did a course several years ago. As expected, my skin got worse at first, and my lips were chapped the entire time. But, once into about week 5, my face cleared up, and stayed clear for about 6 months afterward. During that whole time, I never did more to my face than wash it with hot water. But, one day I took one, then thought I had forgotten to take it and took another - it gave me the most mind-splitting pain in my eye that I have ever experienced. I almost went to the hospital. Turns out it was a Vitamin A overdose. Anyway, about 2 years later, the cysts came back, although never as bad, and most I just use Retina now. I'd recommend it though, to just about anyone.

Man I used to have the craziest case of acne. I mean it was so bad where I didn't want no one to look straight at me. I was scared to take Accutane at first casue my Doctor told me about the possible effects but after the torture of High School life with all these zits..I said screw it. I took it and yes, believe it yo, two-three weeks into it I had a face completely covered with pimples. It was so sad, but then guess what? The 5-6th week came and it started to clear up. And when it did, it kept clearing. Next thing you know, it was like I never had pimples.EVER. Crazy huh. But I may have been lucky. A friend of mine took it and had thoughts of suicide and he was the most reg. dood you'd ever know too. Think it through yo, but this stuff really does work good.Trustmedood.

i have had moderate acne since i was 15 and i have tried everything to try and get rid of my acne but nothing ever worked. finally my derm prescribed me accutane. i was on it for five months. I have really oily skin and the first month being on accutane i noticed my skin completly dried up. It was great. my make up was actually able to stay on for the whole day without out melting off from oil. My skin didn't clear up completly until the fourth month. after that my skin stayed clear for about three months. two months after being off accutane i really started breaking out. this is my third month off and my skin just gets worse and worse. My derm said i can start a second treatment but i have to wait six months, to let my liver rest. But accutane really did help clear my skin while i was on it but it doesn't stay clear for long. well with me anyway. The only side of effects were dry skin, chaped lips and red face. I would diffinitly recommend accutane to any one who has bad acne.

I had terrible acne all my childhood. It started when I was barely into middle school. It always just got worse and worse. My mother had me into the doctors office at least once a year, sometimes 3 or 4. I hated even going to school cause I looked so bad and became very introverted. When I turned 23 I got over the depression and decided I had had enough of every prescription out there for my face and asked my doctor for Accutane. I just read an opinion that stated the person lost hair over it... I am now bald (most likely inherited) but do not care one bit. I gained self confidence in a mater of months. I was in such missery during those months, with dry skin and chapped broken lips, but ever since (i'm 27 now) I have had an impecably clear complection. I was my face with just an astringent (Witch Hazel) and leave it at that, anything more (soap, lotion etc.) is just overkill. I love this product, but do be careful, it is very powerful and dangerous, it could really mess you up, but then again, I believe it was worth it.
SGuchi 03/07/2004
I did 2 cycles of treatment (typically 2-3 cylces are needed) and, while Accutane (Isotretinoin) didn't clear up my skin completely, I still highly recommend it to those tired of drugstore topical treatments and harsh face washes that do little or worse for acne breakouts. This product cleared up about 80% of my acne, far greater than any other product I tried out there could accomplish. For me, side affects were mild (dry skin and chapped lips, as expected). It even cleared up those dreaded blackheads on my nose which are nearly impossible to treat. Before Accutane, my face was painful and sore and super oilly! Within an hour of washing my face every morning, my face was like an oil slick. Now, my face is clearer, pain-free, and oil-free. No longer do I dread looking in the mirror every morning, worrying about all the new zits that popped up over night. I no longer spend so much time applying makeup and concealers to hide zits. And most importantly, now that my acne has cleared up, I feel more confident in social scenes!
miracle 03/06/2004
Right now, I am on my 1st month of Isotretinoin and it turns out that my acne got worse, but my doctor said that it will only last for a while, and it should start to improve in the 2nd month, but right now the side effect for me is only dry lips, and most of the black-head on my nose were gone, which is a good start. All I can say is that you have to be patient for this drug ~ !
Katydid 12/21/2003
I was on Accutane for 5 months and experienced good results. My face never cleared up completely, but it improved maybe 90%. Having said that, the side effects were pretty severe. My mouth peeled to the point that it was bloody for the entire time I was on the medication. I got rashes and headaches. The dryness was almost unbearable, but I got through it. I suggest this medication only for severe acne.
FuzzieZN 11/08/2003
I have been on Accutane for almost 2 months and I can tell my face is getting better. For those giving 1 stars and saying "you have to be crazy to be on this b/c of the side effects"....YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE SEVERE ACNE!!!! I agree this CAN have severe side effects, but the really bad ones are RARE and this medicine should only be used when all other options have been exhausted. Aquaphor can be found at any drug store by the lotions and is a GREAT remedy for dry lips. For some people, the acne will not return, for others it will. Everyone is different and no one should be judged for taking this medicine. The decision is between the patient and the dermatologist.
violet85255 10/18/2003
If you're thinking about accutane just click on hairloss.com and read the forum from previous accutane patients. Like me they all have devasting permanent hair loss. When you have acne you think "so what, I'll do ANYTHING to get rid of this," but trust me. I had thick beautiful hair and now it is 75% gone and it is still falling out. I started accutane 3 years ago. The hair loss doesn't start until after you stop the product. The accutane did clear up my acne but it came back six months later. The side effects are severe. Absolutely horrible. If it causes irreversible hair loss by shutting down the follicles imagine what it is doing to your organs. Do not take this product.
stef7654 07/11/2003
This is the only treatment that cured my acne. I noticed a huge improvement after only 45 days. Would take it all over again if I had to!
Bellaladie 07/08/2003
Went on accutance 2 years ago for my stubborn acne.. for the first time in 10 years (I was 26) my skin was clear... still had to use benzoyl peroxide to keep acne under control, started breaking out about 6 months later... skin is now oily and still acne prone- would not go back on medication because I was sleeping 14 hours a day (no joke) and gained close to 20 pounds.. didn't see this listed as side effect but the fatigue was all too real.. also seeing flakes from my lips stuck in my keyboard at work was pretty embarassing...
jameslemon 05/27/2003
I am in month 2 of 4 months taking 70mg. So far acne has lessened amazingly, just a bit of redness now. Dry lips have been only side effect, easily managed with Vaseline a few times a day and drink lots of water. I reccomend this treatment to anyone with longstanding acne. Only concern is with drinking alcohol - occasionally still do but worried about effect on liver.
niteowl328 05/26/2003
I would only recommend this treatment for EXTREMELY severe acne. I think my doctor was too quick to prescribe it. While me acne was pretty bad, it could have been much worse. The side effects were not worth the trouble. The awful dryness and peeling left the corners of my lips less defined from scars, and now I have WRINKLES at the age of 23 (and I ALWAYS wear sunblock and often a hat!). My mother is 47 and does not even have smile lines. Two years after treatment, I still cannot wear contacts comfortably like I used to. Shortly after treatment, I discovered that my eye prescription had worsened for the first time in about 5 or 6 years. I forgot to mention that the acne came back right after treatment--it took awhile to get bad again, but it got to be worse than before. Unless your acne is extremely severe, it is just not worth the horrible side effects.
maryabr 01/14/2003
Very good experience with this medication. A "dream drug" in my case. None of the bizarre side effects seen in the news. Only dryness, as to be expected. Would take it again in a heartbeat if needed. My recommendations: use ample Vaseline for dryness (regular on lips, and Whipped formula on legs, arms, feet, etc.)and try not to wash hair everyday if you can to avoid dry scalp once the dryness really sets in.
Patience 12/25/2002
It was a miracle for me...Do it! When I was 32, in 1983, after 20 years of antibiotics, acne creams, light treatments and bi-monthly Doctor visits for cystic acne, a friend and I did 2, 5 week rotations of Accutane pills. My skin pealed, turn red, the inside of my nose dried out (use vaseline). My friend and I contemplated bringing veils back into style! Our lips split, cracked and bleed too. We saw sebrum (the white stuff) dry out and push out of some pores like little white pearls. Twenty years later we are both zit free! Now we only use Retin-A to get rid of wrinkles!

i m 25 and had persistent acne since 18, i had tried many medications and nothing seems to work on me. My dermatologist suggested Isotretinoin as long term medication on antibotics can be detrimental.i m currently finishing the 4 mth of the treatment with a dosage of 40-50mg.The side effects are dry lips, itchy skin and ocassionally nose bleeds for me.Initially i had a mild headache after consuming the mediacation after 5hrs and this lasted 5 days and fortunately it wears off after that. i also it has some negative effects on the control of your emotions but somehow hard to be described. The effects of the medications seems to be "miracle" as most of the people around me were amazed to see the results(alot of them wondered what i had taken)..near perfect complexion except those previous scars and the sebum is well balanced on the face. Note: the side effects affects indivdual differently..some may be tolerable and some maybe wear off after a short period of time
nessa 11/16/2002
This worked fine on my acne, not 100% but a whole lot better than it was. I didn't give it 5 as the side effects are SHOCKING.Please believe everyone when they tell you to moisturise from the start or you WILL regret it like me.After the first month I could not wear any make up and the skin on my legs was literally peeling (horrible I know) of in strips.By then any moisturiser I put on didn't seem to help.Sorry to sound all doomy. The medication works great but if you don't look after your skin from the Very beginning while you are on it you'll be wondering if its worth it....
alperstein 11/06/2002
Unfortunately it does take a few weeks before you see any results. In addition, one has to keep on using it to stay acne free.
Skysthalimit 10/18/2002
I am currently on Accutane and it dried my lips out big time. It has cleared up the problem though dramatically. It is not for everyone. The side effects bother me but I want the problem gone permanently. I would recommend this product for those who want to get rid or acne but beware of the side effects.
Snoopy 08/26/2002
I've suffered with severe acne problems since I was 12 years-old (I'm 21 now) and over the years I've tried many different medications that just did not work. This past summer, I decided to give Accutane a try and all I can say is that I wish I had taken it sooner. It totally cleared my face up. I haven't had any side effects other than dry skin around my mouth. I highly recommend it for anyone with severe acne problems that just won't go away.
Adyonline 07/03/2002
I'm currently in my 7th week of the treatment and so far my acne is almost completely clear, visit my Isotretinoin Users Diary at http://www.acne.homestead.com to see the full story as it progresses.

AWESOME FOR CYSTIC ACNE! I want to share this example on behalf of my husband - He had bad acne that started at 18. He was too embaressed to go to the doctor for a long time. Finally, the cysts got so bad that he finally went at about age 19. The doctors tried every prescription possible. From what he told me, the worse part was trying topical after topical and knowing it wouldn't work. Everything was supposed to make his skin dry, and he hoped at least for that, if not the acne going away (his skin is EXTREMELY OILY), but nothing worked. After 6 mos of that, they finally put him on Accutane. It was a miracle for him. He cleared up within 2 months, and was clear for a long time. He did have dry skin and chapped lips, but that was a small price to pay to not have people staring at him when he walked down the street, or people whispering behind his back. Now, 6 years later, some acne is returning, but it is treatable with topical creams and a STRICT cleansing regimen. His only regret is not going to the doctor sooner. His acne scared his face very badly. I watched this happen, and can say without doubt, that if you have severe acne, truely severe acne, this is the answer for you. It's very harsh, though, so make sure you see a doctor who let's you know what all the side effects are. My opinion is that a lot of people are prescribed this without it truely being neccesary without trying other products first, and the side effects just aren't worth it. For people whose acne is as bad as my husband's was, the side effects were nothing compared to getting his life back.
eimile 02/12/2002
I loved Accutane - it saved my face. Topical vitamin A was OK but nothing touches the pills.
tiddlywink 02/07/2002
nothing works better
chris_g_g 01/09/2002
This is at the harsher end of the available drugs. Make sure you've tried all the weaker options first as it can wreck your skin with dryness. I started off on oxytetracycline tablets and moved up through everything incl. (vitamin A) creams and god knows what else. Each successive treatment seemed a little better but also brought much more facial tautness and dryness. Don't remember if this is the last one I did (had so many different treatments) but, if it is, be aware that it can give bad muscle/joint ache, make you lethargic and possibly slight depression/irritability as well as drying skin beyond belief. I still suffer from moderate (sometimes heavy) acne but not nearly as much as before I tried all these drugs! Works quite well while your on it but not a permanent fix and be prepared for some nasty side effects.
itsmeinaz 01/04/2002
don't buy it! first time use i was promised this would clear up my acne forever...wrong. second time use...this'll take care of the problem, guaranteed...wrong. recommended a third time (I was told the previous doses weren't strong enough) but I said absolutely not! it's expensive and the side effects were horrible. the dryness and swollen lips made me look worse than the acne did!
Carlant66 12/10/2001
I had been experiencing an on and off bought with acne when my doctor prescribed accutane. I was on it for about a week when I started to experience a chronic headache. Not only that, but my face got SO dry and the skin on the bottom of my feet start to peel of in huge pieces! How gross is that?! Of course, I immediately stopped taking the accutance and do not plan on trying it again anytime soon. I think this is a very powerful drug and must be taken VERY carefully. It's not for everyone.
MemeMars 12/07/2001
NEW PEOPLE MUST READ!!! I started accutane a month ago and I used "Klaron" while on accutane. And after a month I've not had a single breakout. Klaron is a perscription sulfer bacterial killing liquid. It has almost NO side affects and is designed for sensitive skin. I would highly suggest asking your derm about it. It is really good, cheap, effective and seriously absolutely NO side affects. I'm probably gonna stop using when my current bottle runs out (which will be in another month or so). By then, hopefully, accutane will have started to work.
SeanWinters 09/04/2001
Beautiful product!! It makes your face practically oil-free, and perfect! It does dry the heck out of your skin and lips though. Use moisturizers and chap-stick, and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Totally worth it, though. Lots of people tell me how great my face looks. Awesome product!
lmikita 08/10/2001
At first it dries out your skin, but by the 3rd month (based on a 5 month treatment period) your acne improves dramatically. I have been off of the medication for 2 months now and my skin has never looked better. I have not even had one breakout since. The only draw back is that your lips become very, very chapped. I used Aquaphor which was great and helped alot. Use it at the beginning of the treatment...trust me!
RICHIENICOLS 07/18/2001
This Product Kicks Ass! Im in high school and ive never experienced something so powerful.
islay 01/31/2001
This worked at last after years of being on antibiotics, the only draw back was having a very shiny face towards the end but it was worth it. However, I will say I took this drug over three years ago and have just had my fist cyst since. I am hoping it will be the last, if not oh well back to the medication please.
luvarabhorses 01/13/2001
I took it when I was 30 and tired of dealing with an issue that should have been so long gone. It worked but made my nose so dry I couldn't breathe right and my lips split and cracked. Still, like Daniel, it made my acne manageable though it did not stay gone as I thought it would.
Daniel 01/12/2001
Accutane completely cleared my skin up, just as promised, but my skin did not stay clear for the long-term. My acne came back, although never as bad as it was before I took Accutane. I give it 4 stars still because it basically made my acne problem manageable, so that I can keep it in check with over-the-counter meds now. I would take Accutane again in a second.
