Quirky, funny, low budget. Highly entertaining at the time. Don't know how it would view today.

This was one of the funniest shows ever produced. Mostly because it was in every conceivable way the most absurd thing on television. From the first openly gay person on TV to the brilliant portrait of Burt.
rockerrreds 10/26/2006
Groundbreaking,and very,very,funny.

I can't remember any of their names. I thought the show was pretty good and would love to see some re runs of it.
JuneF 09/23/2006
Really thought this show was witty and wish they'd rerun it. Cast was very talented and the stories were fun.
JohnSpina 02/12/2006
Was not bad but not great.Only reason why I watched it:A friend of the family was in it (Diana Canova)
Mr Nuetron 12/09/2005
This was truly one of the most over rated shows of its day.The terribly unfunny Billy Cystal and even less talented cast(if it were possible). The stories make my mother the car look like Mcbeth.I still can hear that awfull theme song. The dummy probably was least fake of all the characters.
kattwoman 10/02/2005
this was a funny show though i have to say a little strange at times. a very funny and talented cast. i wouldn't mind seeing the reruns.
25Kimbo 09/29/2005
This was one of the funniest shows that i have ever seen. I remember when one of the brothers got married to the mobster girl and their romance just bloomed. Great show. Why no reruns??
HeadOfCobain 07/06/2005
A show that was ahead of it's time. Funny and completely off the wall. Chuck, the dummy, should have won an emmy for his performance!! For those who are collecting the DVD release, be warned, many of the episodes are the edited versions that were released for syndication. I haven't bought any myself, but there are many upset Soap fans out there complaining.
Wid71 05/05/2005
I loved this show! I'm starting to collect the DVD's. A great comedy that (as others said) was way ahead of it's time. The episodes where Burt was replaced by the alien and Corrine's baby was possessed were priceless!
sfalconer 05/05/2005
I know this show was a head of its time but I never really could get into it. The show is a soap opera satire based around the lives of two familys. They took the normal day time soap opera themes and took them to left field and beyond. The production gave it the soap opera look but it did not translate well to prime time.
irishgit 03/25/2005
Funny in spots, but a little wearing.
Djahuti 12/03/2004
SOAP was another pioneer as far as taboo subjects in the 70s.It had a killer cast and was one of the funniest show ever.Katherine Hellmond stole every scene she was in!
Throwback72 06/21/2004
this shopw was kinda of funny from what I can remember
KellyO 04/20/2004
For its time, Soap was an amazing show. Some of the jokes are brilliant where some fall flat. I respect Soap for its boldness and Commedia del Arte flavor which is hard to find on television.
Ronald Sherman 03/04/2004
One of the funniest TV shows of all time. Have the first DVD . Just as funny now as it was then.
scarletfeather 02/19/2004
I thought this was a pretty funny show. Richard Mulligan played a spastic character and was hilarious.
Moosekarloff 12/23/2003
A mildly diverting send of a TV genre time-honored and beloved by pill-popping housewives all over Our Fair Nation. Not nearly as good as its more inventive and subversive doppelgagger, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, but it had some good points to it. Writing was better than average and the ensemble playing of the cast was strong. But, being a mainstream broadcast network program, it carried the typical lame baggage of shows of that ilk.

The only show I ever watched that could have me physically exhausted from laughing so hard. Nothing like a soap. Fast moving. Creative. Always surprising.
astroboy 08/24/2003
Soap. The name itself clues you in.This is a story about two families and takes the daytime soap plots and runs wild with them. This is the first show I know of with an acknowledged gay character. The stories were so absurd that they were hysterical.I loved the invisible Bert and alien Bert storylines. The show lost a little with Benson leaving and the weird ending prevent this from being a 5.The only problem with this show is its hard to jump into in reruns if you haven't seen it before.
kelley723 07/25/2003
This was one of the greatest shows! Albeit it did get a little corny at the end, but there were times I laughed so hard I cried!
dawnmillz 06/13/2003
soap was the funniest show ever! i am playing it at the grooming shop i own and even the teens are laughing! that show produced some great comedians, such as wkrp in cinn. and billy crystal? he went way far! what a spoof on those stupid "soaps"! burt was my favorite! and don't forget about bob! benson and the swede! another show! soap was an icon of the sitcoms then and always will be the best! dawn

When this was in it's original showing, I never missed an episode. I'm suprised at how many people have never seen it. What network is it running on? I'd love to have the series on tape.
forsakenbuyer 03/09/2003
I loved this show. Always loved to watch to see what would be happening to Burt (I believe that was his characters' name). To me he was a comedic genius which often brought me to tears from laughing so hard.
bboop1104 03/02/2003
This was one of the funniest and most original shows I have ever seen and I laughed the entire time it was on!
BonnieBlue 02/20/2003
One of the best shows ever! Sorry it had to end with a cliffhanger (Jessica in front of a firing squad); this makes it hard to enjoy reruns.
crimson_and_cl over 02/20/2003
terrible show

Funny Funny Funny Funny.
lukskywlkr. 01/16/2003
I used to watch this show faithfully, and even watched the reruns for awhile. My problem with the show is that the last episode I saw, Jessica Tate is in front of a firing squad and the guns go off, and then that's the last you see of it. Was that indeed the last episode? I'm pretty sure it was, and I find it hard to watch the show now, knowing that it ends that way.
red630 12/09/2002
The first two seasons were excellent sort of ran out of steam shortly after that.
wendi1bird 11/27/2002
One of the all-time funniest shows, in my book!!
SoSingular 11/06/2002
The theme song was better than the show, and Katherine Helmond's character is nuts.
tpasa 10/15/2002
Before it's time... But what a great run. I'll never forget the "You can rule out suicide" line
Redwolf 08/03/2002
Horrible....
TelevisionGuy 07/03/2002
My favorite show of all time.
CastleBee 01/06/2002
Soap was one of those shows that struggled so hard to be off the wall that many times it just ended up going over the top. But, I did enjoy the wacky cast of characters and watched quite a bit. Then the novelty wore off and it started to get annoying. I do admit to enjoying the occasional re-run though when the TV-PTB choose to run them.
queenmercury 11/26/2001
The funniest comedy show ever! Two words: Chuck and Bob!
stooge 11/07/2001
This show was not one of my personal favorites but it deserves some respect because it was one of the first shows to feature a gay character, and it was probably the first show to show a gay character in a positive manner. It also was the show that introduced us to the character of "Benson", that spun-off into a better show than this one.
knowhere man 06/26/2001
MICKEY MOUSES' DOG IS GAY!!? Faaarrrr out and bizarre. Along with MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN a refreshing change in the usual t.v. fair.
callmetootie 04/05/2001
Even though Billy Crystal plays a gay guy, this show was really, really funny. The stories are so strange and out of this world, and it keeps you wanting more.
