King Lear set in feudal Japan. Brilliantly filmed and acted. One of the best adaptations of Shakespeare ever filmed.

Not Kurosawa's best, which I think is his black and white work, but absolutely stunning, nonetheless.

It's like watching a beautiful painting come alive. . .it's not for everyone, but it is classic cinema. . .be patient, and watch the Japanese version of King Lear unfold. . .

One of my favorites from Kurosawa. King Lear with a few interesting twists to keep things unpredictable for fans of the original play (for example the king's three daughters are replaced by sons). The set-pieces and costumes are bright, colorful and wonderfully filmed, the acting is heart-felt and powerful, the minimalist music eerily effective and the interpretation of the original play adds a distinctly asian spiritual dimension to it. One of the director's finest.
