Our Pet Supplies Plus finally upgraded their products and got a whole bunch of the Merrick canned dog food. My dog, who just passed away yesterday from an illness, was very picky as her illness progressed. I pretty much tried all the different canned foods that I could even down to crap like Pedigree and Alpo, but the foods that I found to be the best as far as palatable with lots of variety and wholesome goodness if you will was Merrick's canned food "Smothered Comfort" which has a whole chicken thigh (bone and all) soft cooked so that even the bone is soft as can be. This food also has whole blueberries, chuncks of carrots, and a brothy type gravy that always could entice Teeter to eat. I never got her to eat any of the dry foods that I could get my hands on, such as Solid Gold, Merricks, Natural Balance, Nature's Variety "Raw Instincts", Innova Evo, and so on and so forth. The other flavor that Teeter absolutely loved was Merrick's "Brats N Tots" I cut it up and she loved it!

We started feeding our 3 pets the canned food almost a month ago, and their coats look AMAZING. Canned is fed once a day, and Canidae/Felidae dry is given once a day--with Halo's Dreamcoat mixed in(just started that). The shedding had been reduced to almost none, their skin is no longer dry & flakey. A+

I really like the ingredients in merrick and think they did a great job in formulating the dry food. Their can food is another matter entirely. You would not believe the number of people who returned cans of their Wingaling because the bones were not cooked right and were actually very hard! A couple people almost had their dogs choke on the bones. Also, when I unload cases of the food, there have been multiple times where I have found the cans rotted through. There is actually mold around the lids of the cans. Believe me, it is really disgusting. And this is from cans that I order on a weakly basis! I have never had this problem with any other natural company. If it was just one or two cans that would be one thing, but I am talking about a few cans a month that are moldy like that. Again, would highly reccommend the dry food as I have never heard/seen a problem with that but would stay away from the cans.

Excellent food, and great for picky eaters. The dry food is great because you can add water to it and it forms a sort of gravy. My dogs go crazy for it.

My dog (3-year old shepherd/husky/collie x) loves this stuff! But as others have noted, it's pretty pricey. Instead, I mix a quarter of a can each day with his dry (Orijen) and he loves it - he looks great!

My dog LOVES this food. And honestly, I love being able to feed him such a wonderful food. I am aware of the quality control issues of the past and am careful, but any pet owner should be, regardless of what food is fed.
My dog is on the Wilderness Blend and he looks AWESOME! I've tried other foods and none have produced such remarkable results that Merrick has. I've tried Nutro, who claims to have guaranteed coat improvements, but not with my dog. His coat was so dull and his skin was so flaky, i couldnt stand it. I put him back on Merrick and within a week, 100% improvement. If it werent for the lapse in money, he would have never been off!

The company would not answer simply questions regarding their new canned food. I was told 2 weeks that someone would get back in touch with me and provide me answers. They never did and I called 3 times asking why no one has gotten back in touch and was told someone would get back in touch to let me know why...Unreal. Plus, thoug at first I thought their food was good, my dogs got camplyobacter about 10 days after starting them on the food. Was it the food...I think so but I can't be sure because the company reps/exec's won't return a call. That tell me all I need to know. PLUS they say the products are USDA approved but it is not anywhere in writing and teh AAFCO does not provide this info. I'll stick with making my dog's meals myself. It is not that much trouble and in fact a lot cheaper than this crapola

Merrick has been from OK to great for my dogs depending on which formula.
All of it is expensive(relativly speaking)

My dogs have enjoyed "Grammy's pot pie" in the past.:

Merrick Brand Pet Food has a recall out affecting their canned food. It is in regards to metal tabs from Kosher Chicken entering their production line. I have found similar foreign items such as large pieces of plastic and rock hard bones that would not mash. We had terrible customer support, and they explained that sometimes these things just ened up in the process. Plastic? Metal tabs? Large hard bones? What else gets in there ... they offered no explanation, just free food. Please, if you choose to feed this food, mash it and look through it before you feed it to your dog. Mine ate it, loved it, but it gave him diarehha and gas, and he would vomit on it from time to time. I can only assume that processing that allows foreign materials also allows bacteria and so on.

sorry Merrick fans! But I got a couple bad batches of dry food that made my dogs sick. Make sure your dry food is dark and rich in color...the bad batches the kibble was musty looking and larger like it had gotten wet and then dried. Also got a bad can of Medditeranean Stew..the can exploded when I opened it. Up until now we loved Merrick...but I think we'll look for a new brand ....bummer!

The food is good, but it's expensive and for that price, I can make my own home made food which is what I do and feed canned also since I know how to make balanced home made food for my dog. The calories per can are very low, so you need to feed your dog more of it, so that makes it more expensive too.

I have had my Pit Shepherd mix puppy on Merrick dog food, as she will have "the runs" if I even try to put any other puppy food. I think the Ingredients are exceptional, and have no plans to change the brand of food she is on! Even my 11 year old Chow Chow now has a very full coat of fur after only a few weeks of this brand! Using many others before, this never happened except when I was cooking for her myself!!!!!

I had my three Boxers on Merrick wet food combined with Wellness dry for quite some time. I began to notice that the consistancy of the food was dramatically changing and all my dogs began having diarrehea. I contacted Merrick customer service twice via email and they never bothered to address my questions or concerns. I took them completely off Merrick and everyone is now fine. If you decide to feed this food to your dog, be aware that if you have a problem, the company will not respond and clearly does not care about their customers.

I have used the Wilderness Blend kibble for about 4 months for my four dogs ranging in age from 4-8 yrs. It is rare that I can find a food that all my dogs do great on, but all four are doing really good on this food. As for taste my dogs litterly attack their bowls. It's interesting that all low ratings come from people that have not tried the food.

Merrick canned food in the only food that our yellow lab will eat. He loves the varieties of the cans. The price needs to come down, particularly for quanity buyers. Also, we would love Merrick to offer larger cans for larger dogs. Merrick's dry food is also good, but our boy likes the gravy and moisture in their canned food the best. We've tried other canned food, only or him to walk away without eating it, particularly if it was a patt, rather than gravy based.

I've never tried their dry food, but the canned food is great, my dog loves all of the different varieties. I like the fact that instead of the usual dog food paste, it actually has chunks of meat and vegetables in the food...also has an impressive ingredient list.

The Merrick family has made a career out of recycling. Their rendering plant is their primary supplier for their pet foods. Do you really want to feed your pet that??

Last year (2004) Merrick was named in a class-action lawsuit because many dogs died or became severely ill from food that they produced in their Texas plant for another dog food company. Plus, they quietly produce a really low quality dog food under another name (Beef'n More). Why take a chance with your dog's life?

2 stars for price- 5 stars for ingredients.TOTAL=3 But we're really waiting on the dry kibble (which is the real challange for dog food companies) to keep our interest.

Fantastic canned food! Can't wait to see what they have in store for a dry line. The ingredient list is awesome my cattle dog loves the taste of the varieties he has tried so far and the price is in line with the other ultra premiums without being a loaf food.
