A dog can be a great pet. I prefer large outdoor dogs myself, and won't get a dog unless I have a large enough yard for a dog to run around in. I don't really see the appeal of indoor dogs, you have to let them out to do their business, and they shed all over the place.

As much as I love dogs and admire their great personalities, I don't think they're suitable pets for me. They require too much work to maintain their good health, well beings, and hygiens. Perhaps I will considered having another dog when I'm retired.

My pit bull is my best buddy, quiet, calm, affectionate, does not talk back, he has protected me thru some mighty tough scrapes. Yea, he smells like a dog time to time, nothing a bath won't cure. Mark Twain got it right "pick up a starving dog, feed him and make him well -- and he will never bite you. That is the difference between people and dogs". With all the crazies out there, I sleep better at night when he is lying by my bedroom door.

The best thing about dogs is that when you take them along on your Antarctic expedition and you run out of food, you can eat them.

You need to meet my dog Lucy. I live in Alexandria, VA. The great thing about this area is that dogs are allowed in all stores! So, Lucy is the most social pet I have ever met! I was warned against getting a cocker by people who had bad cockers in the past. I did my research about the breed. I know there are inbred cockers, so they have a bad rap. But, I looked for a breeder that loved cockers, and bred for the right reasons. It took me 9 months to find her. I drove 3 and a half hours to get her. She was raised on a farm with cats, horses, and goldens. I met my dog's parents and grandparents. They were healthy and happy. There were no papers that came with her. I did not care to show her, so it does not matter to me. The real reason that she is the dog she is, is that I took the time to train her right. "A trait that many dog owners fail to do." I hope you get the chance to meet a cocker like mine someday. She has the personality of a curious todler. She is silly, loving, loyal, and the best listener when I had a bad day at work. My neighbors and family all ask for her to come and visit. And, now all the people that warned me about buying a cocker want me to breed her, so that they can have a dog like Lucy.

The dog is the ultimate pet and best friend. They are loving, loyal, affectionate and protective. However, they are fairly demanding and can be expensive to care for.

I am not a big dog fan. i hate how they always smell no matter what you do!
TeresaG 02/28/2008
I have 3 dogs myself ~ and love every one of them. Totally agree with JamieM ~ I hate people who train their dogs to attack. I have a Bernese Mt. Dog, and they specifically tell you NOT to do that because their hearty bark and sheer size are enough for home protection.
Jamie McBain 09/18/2007
Dogs are great pets to have. Granted, they do cost alot to maintain, but they are also very loyal, and don't ask for awhole lot, other then to feed, played with, and be petted every once in awhile.
My only beef, is owners who train their dogs to attack, anyone who comes along, and owners who abuse their dogs.

I love dogs, but I hate what is becomming of them in todays society. For all of those who got a dog from a pet store you may not like what you are about to read. First and foremost ALL, not some, not most, but ALL puppies from pet stores come from puppy mills. A puppy mill is essentially a consentration camp for dogs where the bitches live all their lives in chicken coops and all of the puppies are inbread. For all those who don't know what inbreeding is, its why incest is illegal for the human race. It is disgusting what dogs are subjected to in these mills. By buying a puppy from a pet store we are just promoting a practice that has been going on since WWII. Ever walk into a pet store selling puppies and see a sign in 100 point font that states that states "Pedigree registration does not assure proper breeding conditions, health, quality, or claims to lineage"? I have, and one wonders why people continue to buy these sick and duying puppies. Now, this review was not meant to put down dogs in any way. They are amazing creatures who only live to please. The reason I mentioned the puppy mills is that I feel that what many store owners/millers are doing is wrong. They are abusing an animal that was put on this earth to be a companion to men. Not to be locked in a cage and starven to death. I have two wonderfull dogs that I found through a rescue site called petfinder.com. I encourage everyone who is interested in a dog to check out this site. You can find 8 week puppies for $200 that just need a home because they are in rescue. Just tyoe in your zip code and the type of dog/age of dog that you want and you will get multiple pages of dogs in your area that are looking for a home. Helen Exley once said that "the avarage dog has one request to all humankind---Love me." It is time we start doing something about the cruilty being done to these magnificent animals. Please take into consideration what I have said in this review and do not shop at stores that sell puppies. If enough people start to boycott these places mavbe something will finally be done about the puppy mills. Thanks Kat puppyloverkb@cox.net
**Update, I just found a really neat site that goes into what buyinh a puppy at a petstore really means. It is still under construction, but if you go to the genetics section you can read really interesting articles on pet store puppies. The website is http://www.petshoppuppies.com
Check it out!

Dogs are the best pets. Its even been proven that people are healthier with dogs since dogs require a lot of attention and exercise and they look cool too.
