Easy Rider 5

Gets my vote. Hendrix and Steppenwolf alone can carry it.

I'm partial to both the soundtrack and the movie. The music was put to good effect in the film and it's more than listenable just as a soundtrack, too.

Glad at least one list on here concerning music isn't infested with cluelessness.

Very good, although it loses a half star for using a cover version of The Weight as opposed to the original by The Band, which is heard in the film. The switch was due to right's disputes between ABC, the record company that released the album and Capital Records, the Band's label. Over all it serves as a pretty concise time capsule of American rock music in a significant period of transition.

The soundtrack album was one of, if not the first, soundtrack album comprised entirely of contemporary radio hits assembled as background music for various scenes in the film, a practice that largely dominates the soundtrack market now. Prior to that soundtrack albums were almost always music composed to enhance the mood of various scenes of the film, with a pop song or two slipped in as it appeared somewhere in the film.

According to legend, director Dennis Hopper had commissioned either David Crosby, or Crosby, Stills Nash and Young to do an original soundtrack for the film. Either Hopper, or the studio, watched a cut of the film with the various songs that we hear today dropped in as place holders. It was decided that the song selection actually enhanced the finished product better than any original music would. And the modern soundtrack album was born.

There are quite a few songs in this soundtrack that I would regard as canonical: " If 6 Was 9" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and " The Pusher" by Steppenwolf being particular favorites, though " Kyrie Eleison" by The Electric Prunes, as used in the cemetery sequence, was also effective... and nothing on it is bad, though " Bird Song" by The Holy Modal Rounders is pretty annoying (though simultaneously funny) and I like the music on it if not the vocals. For me, when I think of this film, THE song I personally associate most with the film is The Byrds' stupendous " Wasn't Born To Follow," a Goffin/ King song that is a truly magnificent blend of pop, country, and psychedelia.
