If they had written only Smoke on the Water, for the sheer number of high schoolers who played their first notes to Smoke, these cats should be in. Add to that Deep Purple "Made In Japan" (the greatest live album of all time) and they should be basking in Hall of Fame glory. But then there was the 5 Star album MACHINE HEAD: Space Trucking / Highway Star / Lazy... Plus off other albums great album tracks like "Sweet Child in Time", and classic covers Hush, Kentucky Woman, My Woman From Tokyo, Black Nights, Rat Bat Blue, Speed King. They realesed a number of solid album in the 1970s and 80s like "In Rock", "Fireball", "Stormbringer". "Who Do We Think We Are". I'm trying to think of a band with a better starting 5. Jon Lord was a monster on keys, irraplacable. Ritchie was a player. Great vocals (just listen to Made in Japan for the screaming, awesome), this guy was good enough to sing on Jesus Christ Superstar.
I don't get it. I don't understand the Hall's judgement on this one.
STYXr4kidz 04/24/2008
Smoke on the Water, but no entrance into the Hall. what gives? Cleveland = Mistake by the Lake
chrismin2003 03/13/2008
They would have to put a fog machine on Lake Erie on the day of their induction!
reachdb 03/09/2008
Agreed. I've never been impressed.
JandC 03/08/2008
I think that Deep Purple is one of the first British Heavy Metal Bands that used a Hammond Organ.
Bluesmaster007 02/29/2008
This band sold more albums worldwide between 1972 & 1975, has had more than one top ten hit and owns the single most reconizable guitar riff in the history of rock and roll. And Leonard Cohen makes it in? WTF?
aartizookniemi z 02/26/2008
This band chanced rock history it wont be a Rock and roll Hall of fame without them
navinj 12/21/2007
Eventhough they've had zillions of lineup changes, they still belong. Many other bands are in that had as many or more lineup changes than Deep Purple.(Like the Eagles? Henley and Fry are a couple of pompous Hypocrites) Deep Purple are the godfathers of Heavy Metal in my opinion.
ILikePie 12/17/2007
Oh come on... how can you nothave Deep Purple? They have a whole arsenal of awesome songs (I don't care what Blackmore/everyone says, Stormbringer is amazing) including Strange Kinda Woman, Woman From Tokyo, Black Night, Fireball, etc... They have a load of talented members, including one of the best guitarists in the world in Ritchie Blackmore.Oh, and not to mention they wrote one of the most iconic and recognisable riffs in rock history. Not that they need it... Smoke on the What?
markperr 12/14/2007
Deep Purple MKII (Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice) is the Deep Purple of which I speak. Smoke on the Water contains the most recognized Riff in Rock and Roll. Hits like Highway Star, Lazy, Woman From Tokyo, Child in Time, and Speed King continue to drive stadium audiences to their feet(yes, they pack stadiums throughout the world, even today). They are the seminal Heavy Metal Band. Purple MKII was once rated by the Guiness Book as the loudest concert band ever. They headlined the largest outdoor rock concert ever in the United States (California Jam, 1974). I believe Made in Japan is still the best selling live album ever and in my opinion, the best sounding.
bear duncan 10/03/2007
Excellent, straight forward rock band who with great live shows. Not many hits but just as popular as many "Chartmakers". Great musicianship but too many member changes. Mainstay lineup from Early 70s' should be voted in.
Cripeseroo2 10/01/2007
Creators of possibly one of the most influential rock albums of all time. What aspiring metal guitarist didn't own a copy of Machine Head in the early '70's?
eddiecook 05/25/2007
No doubt about it.
chiefhendrixmo n 05/01/2007
The invented the greatest guitar riff ever and most of the popular songs of the 70's
jp1234 04/22/2007
Deep Purple is sorely underated as a pioneer of hard rock/heavy metal and deserves recognition by the RR HoF. Zeppelin and Sabbath get all the credit as the original "templates" of all metal that followed, but Purple was equally influential as a template for all guitar virtuosity and the "power metal" movement. Please induct the Mach II lineup (with honorable mention to Mach III and the the lineup that continues to pump out great rock to the current day).
ripley24 04/12/2007
The first concert I ever went to was a Deep Purple Concert. It was awesome!
Caspery 04/07/2007
Pros: One of the first bands that comes to mind when you think of a rock act on stage. Cons: But that's only because their cheesy and tiresome generic rock receives plenty of classic rock airplay.
killermckiller 03/27/2007
Awesome band with classic song. But they had other great songs to such as Space Truckin
WuzUp 03/27/2007
DEEP PURPLE should already be in there.
durandruan 03/21/2007
metal really needs it due
TheRRHallofFam eisaJOKE 03/05/2007
The Hall is a joke without Deep Purple, the greatest rock band of all time.
ajowoods 02/21/2007
The biggest British Metal group not in, likely due to the many lineup changes and metal bias. Even so, they should be in simply for "Machine Head" and "Made In Japan", two landmarks of metal.
Bajs 01/10/2007
Bajs je najbolji
divergonefishi ng54 01/08/2007
Not only they are talented , their music are so good you can taste it. By the way Ian Piace is my all around fav. rock drummer of all time.
Allan42091 12/28/2006
Please put in Deep Purple...Richie Blackmore and the Band should have been inducted a long time ago!!!!!!!
Limpin' Trenchfoot 11/17/2006
Apart from Burn and Machine Head, I'm not a fan but they're every bit the equal of the more celebrated Zep and Sabbath. Blackmore was a technically a better player than either Iommi or Page and has been equally as influential. Both Gillan and Coverdale were superior singers to Plant and Osbourne. Whatever your views on metal/hard rock, Purple were unarguably pioneers of the genre.
Chrisrianna 11/05/2006
This just shows that the Rock Hall people are half-witts
DiamonDave 10/31/2006
Should have been inducted a decade ago. Just a bit better than Stooges, Chic, Smith, Tex etal, don'tcha think!!!
bbbgb 10/26/2006
Deep Purple are more talented than any of their rivals past and present. Came up with the world's most famous rock riff. Have never ever released a bad album. They are one of the elite live bands and are no slouches today when it comes to putting on a great show. Kick some of the rubbish out of the hall of fame and rush this most deserving band in!
bigfatphony 09/19/2006
Absolutely, they should have been in a long time ago.
magoo3985 04/27/2006
Not sure how far Hall Of Fame voters will go with Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands, but Deep Purple definitely deserves to be in.
MapleRock 04/15/2006
Without a doubt the most overlooked of the classic rock bands. I have no quarrel with Sabbath getting in, but the 5 musicinas who made of the hey-day of Purple are all top notch players and singers. If they had only recorded "Smoke" they would be under consideration, but MADE IN JAPAN may be the best live album of all time, and MACHINE HEAD the finest hard rock album of all time. Before the idiots in Cleveland put another jazz or country artist in, open the bloody doors and let in the legandray masters DEEP PURPLE.
Kevin McGuigan 03/29/2006
There are so many reasons that Deep Purple should already be in the Hall of Fame. Not only did they create the riff that defined a generation but as times changed so did the band and each change proved the greatness that was and is Purple. Rainbow ,Whitesnake and Gillan three more reasons, Some would argue that these bands belong in the hall as well. Malmsteen and all the 80's shreders owe Deep Purple for their very existence. Purple introduce me to solo work by great musicians like Tommy Bolin ,Glenn Hughes and Steve Morse. Side projects from Roger Glover and Jon Lord were very good and showed the bands virtuosity. All incredible musicians and fantastic vocalists that comprised this band should be inducted at the same time. It would be incredible to get them all on stage at the same time.
mikaloneus 03/28/2006
The greatest band ever. It's insane that they're not in.
TheAntiqueRock er 03/23/2006
This is one I can't understand. Deep Purple has written one of the great rock anthems of all time! You instantly know Smoke on the Water from Ritchie Blackmore's first 3 chords (I don't know a single guy that plays in a rock band that doesn't know this song cold!) Now throw in My Woman from Tokyo, Burn, Hush, Space Truckin', Stormbringer, and Highway Star. This is one oversight that can not be forgiven.
koaru 02/23/2006
There are no words for how crappy this band is. Honestly. There are so many other bands that deserve recognition. These people are relatively talented BUT at the same time what with the lead singers voice? I admit great guitar riffs, but smoke on the water is the only song that ever really got out there. Ask the general public and no one knows who they are. Of course they know the song AND I agree they should be recognized for being the first song a kid learns, but other than that, no one knows them, or at least relatively few do.
rdevic saint 12/29/2005
Exceptional Band. Blackmore and Lord are far superior than any other guitarists / keyboardists of the 70's. MACHINE HEAD one of the most influental albums of all time. It's not really a Hall of Fame until they are inducted.
AmazingEEE 12/03/2005
Now that Sabbath is in, hopefully Purple will get their recognition as a true hard rock/metal pioneer... I don't particularly like this artist, but their HoF credentials are very, very good indeed...
kim daniel 12/01/2005
Deep purple in rock is Most important album in ROck History.. also live in japan too.....
Diamond Dave 11/27/2005
Greatest band not in the R&RHoF
Robbo59 11/15/2005
An absolute no=brainer. Arguably the most talented group of musicians, position for position, in the history of Rock. The band that launched countless thousands of imitaters but illicitated none that could surpass their fury. AC/DC and Aerosmith are in the Hall but Ritchie Blackmore and company are let stnding in the lerch? Shame, shame, shame....
sfalconer 10/28/2005
Some call them the poor man's Led Zepplin but they were a much more grittier band with a little bit more of a down to earth sound. They produce some great songs such as my Woman from Tokyo and Smoke on the Water. They are definitly Hall worthy!
Grigor 10/24/2005
SIMPLY THE BEST BEST BEST EVER!!!
twoshake 10/21/2005
Innovators of hard rock/heavy metal/neo classical. MADE IN JAPAN - BEST LIVE ALBUM OF ALL TIME - TELL ME WHAT BAND CAN MATCH THIS. MACHINE HEAD/IN ROCK/BURN ETC AND THEY WROTE THE MOST RECOGNIZED RIFF OF ALL TIME: SMOKE ON THE WATER BRILLIANT MUSICIANS!!!! CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT IN THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME.
Gianthogweed 10/19/2005
Wow, I can't believe bands like Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Yes, and Rush Genesis, and Sabbath have not yet been inducted. It's as if the HOF has something against highly influential pioneer prog rock/metal bands with enormous talent.
kinston_eagle 09/27/2005
Machine Head alone should guarantee them a spot.
trooper5 09/06/2005
Deep Purple are the founders of exciting, melodic, musically challenging hard rock. There body of work includes Classical Concertos - revered by some of the worlds greatest living classical composers through sensitive blues to outstanding innovative hard rock. They have sold in excess of 100,000 records and have influenced every rock musician on the planet - absolutely bar none!! Individually and collectively they are unsurpassed and should have been one of the first names in the rock and roll hall of fame!!
souljunkie 08/19/2005
One of the fathers of hard rock. They definitely get my vote.
Harald Haarfagre 08/18/2005
Simpley the best rock band in the 70's and the best stage act that you find today. They don't need Metallica's or Kiss' pyro to explode on stage. They just got it with the music and that is all that should have to be
